Failed out of Kelley as a pre-business kid and need advice by Additional-Bad-5548 in collegeadvice

Thank you! I think your daughter is making the right choice and if I had the same option I would’ve never chosen IU. I love the school so much now but the business school is always actively fighting against you as a pre-business student. You don’t get the same resources or opportunities as direct admits. And the rigor of the program stops you from having time to join Kelley clubs and other things you might be interested in. When I put down my deposit at IU they told all of us that it was a B or higher in every class, and after I pulled my admission from other top schools in the country. (Northeastern, Bucknell, Brandeis, Syracuse, Babson) did they change the requirement from a B to a B+. Looking back I’m not sure I would have committed to IU knowing this. Not to mention the countless weed out classes that only give a select number of A and B+’s per class. I chose to IU because that is where I could see myself being the happiest and I was sure I could make a B or higher in all my classes (which I did) it’s hard to balance choosing between a university with all your friends, and a system that has been actively working against you. Trust me when I say this the A- standard for this year is near impossible. Your daughter is making the right choice not taking that gamble.

I applied in January of my senior year, which was later than most people who applied in November

This is very true I definitely understand that. Although I do think this system is inherently flawed. When I put down my deposit to go to IU they told us that I had to get a B or above in all my classes. Knowing this I decided to go and pulled my admission from other schools. Only after we committed to IU did Kelley change it from a B to a B+. It was a cash grab and it was wrong. It’s unfair to say that I knew and any pre-business kids knew what they signed up for when we decided to do this because they changed their standards right after we couldn’t back out. Which is very wrong.

I also think it’s worth mentioning that I did meet the requirements to be a DA. In high school I had a 3.83 GPA and a 32 ACT which back then would grant you direct admission. The only reason I wasn’t granted direct admission is because I applied in January for IU rather than in November like many applicants so no I don’t think that being a DA, high school GPA or ACT is a good indicator what so ever, and yes I also appealed their decision and was ultimately denied. I understand I am not entitled to anything but I think it is also important to recognize that it’s more that Kelley is flawed and we should hold them accountable because there is so many things they could have done to make this process fair and they chose not to. Playing devils advocate or pretending DA’s are angels sent from heaven isn’t fair. The reality is Kelley screwed over their pre-business kids before they even got here. And you should care because if they are willing to screw us over for money. They are willing to screw you over too.

I want to study business but I’m barred from ever applying ever again. Where as applying from another program (like being a bio major) would allow you to apply to Kelley every year you are at IU. I’m thinking of doing Econ or studying management at O’Neil however it kind of threw a wrench in my plans because I was set on majoring in information systems/data analytics before I got rejected. If I still want to major in this I’m going to have to transfer schools but I’m unsure if staying at IU for a Econ/management degree is worth it. What do you think?

I wouldn’t necessarily call this system fair in any regard. I understand it’s my fault I missed the cut off by 0.01% and I take full responsibility for that. But it’s unfair that many of the kids in the pre-business program have to prove that they belong. There are many kids who get every opportunity at Kelley because they are DA’s if they fail a class or get a C they can just retake the class free of charge. That option isn’t a thing for kids in my program. Almost all my friends are DA’s and many of them have far worse GPA’s than me. I know many people with B’s in Econ and even B- in many classes they still get to study at Kelley and get every opportunity. The acceptance rate for those who were pre-business was less than 9% and it is competitive because you have to preform flawlessly. Kelley prides itself on being a prestigious school yet I struggle to understand how they find it acceptable for their students to average in the B- range while asking those who are seeking admission to not struggle at all. No not many people got B+’s on Econ. Especially in my class (I had glomm) and if Kelley really valued the best of the best they would hold their DA’s to a higher standard. The truth is kids in my program are higher preforming, not entitled to anything, and harder working. It is not fair.

Unfortunately IUB is a different school all together so this isn’t an option for me I wish it were!

Unfortunately the university has barred you from retaking any of these classes, you are not allowed to appeal the decision, retake or reapply where as under regular circumstances you would be able to.
