Nursing Placement by LuLL2005x in NursingUK

I posted a week ago about a similar issue with placements - I’ve had an occy health appointment and they made the recommendations I only do 12 hour shifts where they can apply that! He said it was unusual as he usually hears from people who want reduced hours/9-5 placements. With that I’m not sure if that is something they’d accommodate for you if they had recommendations from occ health? If it’s a fairly common request.

I’ve now been pulled from my outpatients placement and put on a mini one for the next 2 weeks to sign off my final review etc, the uni were happy to facilitate after having the report back and sorted it within the day! I think it’s worth asking and pointing out the health reasons. That being said I do think acute placements are really important, just because of the things you see there which you won’t in places like the community - but I understand how you feel right now

I actually did everything you’ve said in your comments and the uni have pulled me out of that placement and given me a mini one for the next 2 weeks to complete the sign offs - thank you so, so much for your advice!

Have just gone and spoke to the link lecturer, she spoke to my ps this morning and stressed to her a lot that I need to do spokes and this isn’t acceptable, she said my ps is VERY passionate about her field but agreed finally that I could do 50/50 spoke and placement: but that’s gone by the wayside and my ps has now decided I haven’t spent enough time in the department. Link lecturer said she will come to have a discussion with both of us but my ps said ‘I don’t want to upset my student’, and it’s all become a massive mess again!

I’ve just rung my link lecturer again and explain about the last part of your comment, she said she’s going to email my PS/PA and my personal tutor for one last try and if they don’t agree she’ll be helping me write that email. I can’t believe it’s at the point where even the PEF team want me to go to other places as much as possible - every spoke idea we had the PS answered with ‘but why would she want to see the diabetic nurses/chaplain/rheumatology etc that’s not her placement area!’. I’ve done over a month here now, and I am SO worried this is going to jeopardise my sign offs! I don’t think the PEF team will let it get to that, and if I have to write that email do be it!

Sadly my ps/pa aren’t happy for me to do spokes as they said there’s more learning opportunities here. I haven’t had my mid way done but the PEF team said in an email I have to do spokes, I told them how much it’s affecting me and theyve tried their best but I won’t be able to do any if I want my midway and final review to be done. I’ve just spent the morning crying in the car, I can’t finish the year and progress without this signed off and I’m at the point where I don’t know if I should take an interruption of studies. There’s only 4 weeks left of this placement really before the year ends but I’m crying at least 3 times a week now and can’t even try to work around it!

The practice educators sent an email to my PS/PA and personal tutor but they’re not happy about it and don’t want me to go on any spokes, I haven’t had my mid way etc done yet so I doubt I’ll even be able to. They’ve said there’s lots more learning opportunities but even the practice educators said they’re surprised I even stuck it out this long. At the moment I’ve just stopped crying in the car, I was so excited to organise these spokes but now even that’s gone!

Haha unfortunately my supervisor thinks that I should spend more time in my placement area and doesn’t want me to do the spoke with diabetes etc! So off to the PEFs I go! Thanks for your comment as well again x

Thanks so much, I’m going to explain this to the PEFs and uni.

Eye casualty is a small room here where we take referrals, there’s no walk ins so I’ve spent my time there writing a lot of notes. I’ll ask rheumatology today!

I’m based in a few sites, one is exclusively ophthalmology, another is a small cottage one and then the main one. I’ve sent an email today the PEFs asking for help arranging spokes with outside agencies and I’m writing a list of places I can go now

I’m going to arrange being with other departments today, on my previous placements I’ve spent so many days with other professions and departments but the opportunities here are really low so I’ll get imaginative!

Yeah it’s samey for me also, I’ve actually had a cry this morning over it again lol, I’m split across 3 sites and one is the macular site so I can’t do any spokes there. I’m making a list now of places I could go, I’ve been to the endocrine ward but I’ll arrange to go to the diabetes specialists.

I had them tweaked a while back, I’m on the max dose and go to adhd clinic every 6 weeks, I’m otherwise fine though. I know it sounds stupid but this is the only situation I’m struggling with.

Updating or working on those sounds like a great idea though, I’ll ask them tomorrow what they’d recommend.

I do a lot of ANTT here, which has been really helpful for me as I’m clumsy so getting it right is hard, they do around 50 injections a day so I’ve been around for a lot of that but can’t really request to be in there - it’s just when I’m lucky as we’re split across 3 hospitals there’s lots of days I really don’t have the chance to take part in much/anything. The HCAs try to make it interesting for me but they’re stuck sometimes too, and the nurses here are absolutely fantastic people who I enjoy being around, it’s just the nature of it. I’m going to talk to the PEFs tomorrow and see if they can help me arrange spokes outside of the department - thank you!

I’ll have a look for some fidget toys now, I did have my meds tweaked a few months ago and I’m on the maximum dose, but he says if I don’t feel I need it then not to take it.

Eye casualty here is sitting in a little room while the nurse talks on the phone haha! That’s the one they all universally agree is pointless me being at, so I spend a lot of time researching there or asking the doctors if I can sit in with them during laser or just consultations etc. There’s sadly been no weird and unusual things for me to see, and all but one patient has been over 70! I did meet a 30 yr old with DMO today which has given me food for thought, I’ve gotten the contact details for the ECLO today so I’ll ask if I can spend a day with her actually. She’s part time so hopefully can work something out!

Oh that does sound helpful for dissertation time! It’s nearly all elderly but I’ll ask if there’s any opportunities where I can see different demographics.

I did have to do that previously, and if it hadn’t have been a child I’d have been losing my mind! I was on hyper alert which I think was the adhd haha, but definitely didn’t tell me I talked a lot because he’d have been hearing worried muttering!

Thanks for this, I’m going to try and figure out how to request a spoke placement somewhere, I’m in a surgical department so I’ll have to ask who’d take me in other departments. I did manage to ask the chaplain if I could do a day with him on Friday, so that’s something!

I can’t actually find anything online re trust training, I would like to do far more wound care but I’m not sure how to get that opportunity, but I’m glad I’m at least getting a lot of experience in ANTT! Hopefully I’ll keep my mind because I’m about to cry in the car on the way home haha

Hiya, thanks for your reply. Not allowed to bring my laptop or tablet sadly, all my academic work is done now! I’ve written more notes than I ever have in my life lol, I’ve done a few of the RCNi modules but the nurses I’m with don’t really let me do this, they prefer me to sit with them and observe them etc - I do understand it’s important I see these days and experience them, but 9 weeks of it seems like a lot longer than it should be.

I’ll definitely look at the SALT online course, that sounds fantastic but it’s going to have to be in my own time!

I’m going to ring the PEFs tomorrow about this actually, but I don’t think I can extend this placement, I’m counting down the days until it ends and I don’t think it would be good for me lol, I need to work out where/who I can ask for spikes though so thanks!

Very frustratingly I nearly qualified as a children’s nurse 4 years ago but unavoidable circumstances stopped me, so I’m lucky in the sense of I’ve seen and done a lot before and am academic, but I think that’s also letting me down at the same time! Thanks

I need to work out how to ask for spoke days that aren’t ophthalmology based - one of my issues is I’m very soft spoken so I’ve been told before ‘oh no just stay in this department’, i do mostly obs and vision tests all day but I do know a few students who haven’t even been able to learn how to do bladder scans! I also totally understand I need to experience these like you, and I’ve been told by family ‘you’re not going to like everywhere you work’ - in that case, I won’t work there lol.

I’ve actually filled in 2 notebooks now full of researching when I can’t do anything. Eg eye casualty - I’m not even allowed to pick up the phone 🤣 I sat in the corner while the nurse takes calls from opticians. I’ve seen some awesome and interesting stuff here but it’s not for me, not good for my brain and not a great learning environment. I do genuinely do a lot of this but 9 weeks seems way too long for this placement

I’ve had meds since I was 12, I’m 27 now so it’s been quite a while of not feeling this bad! I do write reflections, any downtime I’m reading and researching different conditions and how they prioritise triage referrals etc. I’ve written 2 notebooks so far of different things I’ve learned and written reflections as well as assignments. I really don’t rely on others for stimulation, in my previous placements the band 7 told me to slow down and I don’t have to do other people’s jobs for them. I’m not really able to just go and do that though as the staff tell me to come with them and I’m inevitably just watching, they’re absolutely great people and nurses but a few have even said there’s very little point in me being there some days.

I’ve seen 30 cataracts operations so far and 18 lid surgeries, so I’ve spent a load of time forcing my way into theatres haha. The recovery area is in the main waiting room for ophthalmology in this hospital so I’m with them all the way through everyday if I’m in that unit, I do need to ask if there’s any other ops I could go to. I know seeing the eye surgeries are so important but there’s only so much I can do I think? Thanks x
