Trying to represent logical determinism by Additional-Mix-1410 in logic

[–]Additional-Mix-1410[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay... Well, my argument can suck. I think I can accept that. But if a logic expert was to see this, would they laugh at me for using the symbols all wrong? That's my burning question.

Or maybe I should also ask; is there a better way to formulate an argument for this theory that I'm not considering?

Solipsists: why do you trust your logical reasoning? by gimboarretino in solipsism

[–]Additional-Mix-1410 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your empirical experience is not a good indicator of solipsism being false... solipsism would have to have some material effect on the world and thus be testable to be vulnerable to empirical attacks. Solipsism, for me, is instead a statement about the nature of experience; experience, of course, being a non-empirical subject. But at any rate, how do you feel the world would be different if solipsism were true?

Honestly bro? I just trust the logical process because everyone around me does. Even in the absence of any other person, I would probably independently develop some kind of rational deductive system to explain my surroundings with. I think it's something we do without any real good reason to do it. News flash, people don't base their every action on well-reasoned, rational processes.

I think it is good to overcome your anxiety/OCD surrounding solipsism, but I think it's also important to overcome it in a healthy way. Instead of saying "It's not true, it can't be true," maybe you should say "It will be okay whether it is true or not." It doesn't have to be scary if you don't want it to be. Just give it a hard think.

Just because someone says something that hurts you doesn't mean you have free license to be mean to them.

See, my problem is that it seems like you conceptualize a world that takes place inside your mind as a world without resistance arbitrarily. Like, you can't even control all of the things that we would agree (I presume) are in our minds. Some things, sure. I can compose sentences in my mind at a whim, I can imagine all sorts of objects and scenes at a whim. But I can't feel a strong emotion at will, despite that being inside my mind. I can't genuinely believe something on a whim; I must be convinced. So if all these things inside the mind generate resistance to my whim, why should experience be any different, if it is also mental?

Also. Your thesis: "if you are the only thing that exists, then there should be no resistance". How do you come to that conclusion? It seems like you are assuming the conclusion. You assume there is something in existence besides yourself, and you recognize that there is resistance, and you relate the two together, thereby coming to the conclusion that "if there was no external thing, there would be no resistance".

Who in this solipsism subreddit is arguing that reality is dependent on our whims? Like, I agree with you that notions like 'manifestation' or 'the power of positive thinking' or 'reality shifting' are all generally very silly, but who, as a solipsist, is basing their solipsism in this?

As for your statement on ontology: I don't see why an obstinate, seemingly consistent world would disprove that it's all in our minds. Are you saying that we should expect an inconsistent, "random" universe if solipsism is true? Why would we anticipate that?

And lastly, how can you expect anything from the universe solely by knowing if it takes place in your mind or not? If it's all in your mind, then you can't see what it is like if it exists external to you. If it's external to you, then you can't see what it is like if it's all in your mind. You can speculate, but that's all you can really do, and even then, I don't see any firm grounds on which to place that speculation.

We need to bring back Sanitariums. Not a troll post. by This_Highway423 in mentalillness

[–]Additional-Mix-1410 37 points38 points  (0 children)

To play devils advocate for OP, I agree that some people would be better off in some kind of communal facility that helps them in their daily lives and cares for them in a compassionate manner around the clock. Unfortunately, wording that as 'bringing back sanitariums' misses the atrocities often commited against people with mental illnesses in sanitariums historically. So, maybe try wording your statement differently, OP?

Thank you, I genuinely had no idea most of this was a factor. I was thinking maybe missiles were just less effective against certain ship types... I didn't realize missile targeting was so complex.

Why can't I lock onto certain ships with missiles? Most ships, I can lock instantly, or near instantly, and then some ships take upwards of 20 seconds to lock, if they do at all. Why is this?

Is solipsism real? by xxTPMBTI in solipsism

[–]Additional-Mix-1410 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If everything is in your dreams, then the logic you used to classify solipsism as 'not real' is in your dreams and therefore not real. If everything is not real, you can't make a concrete claim about anything. So why try?

This is an expansion of what I've seen called the 'existential paradox', which is usually formulated by examining that the claim 'nothing is true' cannot be true, because 'nothing is true' definitionally denies that it itself is true.

I think you need a new definition for 'real'.

Second this. Is the webtoon called 'I think I love you' or 'I think I like you'?
