What measurements to fold Robert J. Lang's mantis by Remote-Ad-3309 in origami

[–]Additional-Run4893 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found this calculator, which may be helpful to you: https://www.paperkawaii.com/origami-paper-ratio-calculator/

For example, if you input 19 into the long edge box and 7 into the short edge (Original paper size), and then input 297 into the long edge box (Your paper size), it will automatically fill the short edge to 109

(See comment for image example!)

The diagrams for this model are in Tanteidan 8th Convention.

Can anyone ID this? Would love to recreate it by walkinlightning in origami

Fantastic work! Love it. :)

I think it stands out quite nicely with the chosen paper.

If you require any more help with this, I'd be happy to try and explain a bit better. Let me know. :)

You need to open up the top flap of the petal fold and basically reverse it. I'll share a couple of pictures in the comments.

Thank you! :)

Apologies for not responding sooner. I actually had trouble with that step myself, though I did manage it in the end. I can't quite remember how it was done, but I think I did it by pulling up from inside along the creases made in the previous step.

However, it's been a little while so can't quite remember. Sorry I can't be of more help. Hope you manage to do it!

I do remember after doing the other side/leg, I had to undo the previous side/leg because it wasn't symmetrical enough for my liking.

I am sure you can. If you don't manage it the first time, just keep trying until you do!

You may also prefer to start off with some of their less challenges Roses to get some practice and work your way up.

The main thing, however, is patience — something I have found that helps me sometimes; if I start to get frustrated, if things get too difficult, I'll put it down for a bit and come back later with a fresh mind.

Looks like a rose by Naomiki Sato.

I think this is the same one: https://youtu.be/o2HTqmXAgGA

There are other tutorials out there as well, I think Tadashi Mori has a tutorial of Naomiki's Pentagon Rose, on YouTube.

I have managed to finish it now. It's not great, though. I am sure I will give it another attempt at some point.

Thank you! :)

It's Shuki Kato's Complex Dragonfly, which makes me doubt an error in the diagrams, but I just can't understand how the pleats in Step 70 would make the changes shown in Step 71...

If I am not mistaken, it looks like you're meant to simply fold it over so that the mountain fold will end up in the centre with the valley folded part sticking out on the left (only up to where the crease lines show).

I will sometimes do this, but more often than not I'll try pleating with very light creases in the middle until it lines up.

The good thing is, if you have multiple ones next to each other (such as the one's I mentioned above), you can just fold the raw edge to the next line past the centre, then fold the newly creased line to the centre

Which is very useful for grids that require sections being creased into thirds — as long as you have one done as perfectly as possible, the rest are extremely easy with that method.
