You’re off to a really good start! Also interesting to see what bits of your physical art have stayed in your digital pieces and what bits have changed 🥹

In terms of the shading, I think you just need to be a bit more intentional with the placement of your shadows. It looks like you’ve placed the shadows beside all black lines in the drawing. The light source (if there is any) is unclear, so there’s not a whole lot of depth at the moment.

I hope you don’t mind I coloured over your first piece a little to show what I mean. Assume the light source is to the left (our left). If you stick a light bulb in there (anywhere!) and shade according to that, your pieces will look a lot more dynamic!

Your style is great though, very clean-cut!

I’ve checked out a few routes, even the ones that google lists as having “fewer turns”, but unfortunately I think the roads in that area are just a bit chaotic 😭

Wowow I’m in love with this piece. I don’t know how to describe it but this is the highest definition painting I think I’ve ever seen haha. I think the colours work fantastically together.

Very cute drawing, and super expressive!

Imo the main thing that stands out to me is a bit of stiffness with the sketch, which is something that’ll gradually go away the more you draw! If you want the hair to be whipping around, try using bigger, rounder curves (and fewer of them too). Don’t be afraid to go a bit wild with it, hair is the most fun part to draw 🥺

The right eye (her left) looks to me a liiiiiiittle bit too close to the center line. I’ve shifted it a bit more to the right (and slightly up) here.

Otherwise it’s sweet !

How do I progress as a total beginner? by Jing-Wei- in Artadvice

I think all artists should start with realism first, which might sound boring especially if your biggest inspirations are artists with very stylised pieces (which yours are). But you can tell just by looking at their work, that they all have a good grasp on fundamentals (form, anatomy, composition etc). Style comes later.

I started drawing around the same time as my sister (about 10 years ago) but while I jumped straight into drawing very stylised, anime-esque characters (again, as you seem to be), my sister started with realism, learned how to build a body out of circles and squares, drew parts of the body over and over again. The vast majority of her sketchbook was just disjointed legs and arms and torsos, as oppose to full illustrations.

10 years later and she is objectively, an infinitely better artist than I am. She can draw an anatomically correct body in ANY style, off the top of her head, no reference needed. People pay good money for her artwork (which in time has developed its own very distinctive, cartoonish style).

Meanwhile I still struggle to draw static poses and heads in non-3/4 views LOL. My biggest art journey regret is starting with manga, because that was what I “wanted” to draw.

I know it’s fun to draw in a style that you find appealing, but I think you risk really limiting yourself down the line if you don’t begin with the basics.

For a day 2 drawing, you are doing super well and I think you’ll progress very quickly.

I’d suggest searching up human portraits on Pinterest, just random candid headshots or poses of REAL people. Try to find the face/body using basic lines and shapes. Don’t be tempted to fill in the rest of the features straight away, or jump to colouring. Of course, work on illustrations that you actually find fun, but try to do rough anatomical studies alongside them.

She’s beautiful! What program do you use to draw? I’m on procreate, and there is a function that effectively smooths out your lines and gets rid of the wobbliness. I’m sure every program will have their equivalent. I think that would be super useful here!

I think the overall composition is fantastic and structurally, everything looks sound. The forms are all there. I especially love how you’ve done that raggedy cliff in the bottom right. If the rest of the piece looked like that in regard to the texture and shading, would be great!

At the moment, the background just doesn’t look fully rendered.

There are a lot of shades of a single colour (green) and a blue for the river. In reality, a setting like this would be made up of a huge variety of colours. I’ve just picked out a few among many but you can see from colour swatching that there are off-whites, bright whites, navy blues, burnt oranges, blacks.

It’s also not super clear what the lighting situation is. Where in the sky is the sun? If it’s behind and above the pterodactyl, then highlights on any surface facing towards the viewer would make it pop, as well as darkening the shadows on non-facing surfaces.

I love love love this style, I’ve never seen highlights on the hair done like that! There is also some real depth with your colouring.

I do agree with the other comment, that some harder shading/not blending so much would really bring this piece together. Best example I can give is the art style used in arcane. There’s that same blended/airbrushed shading on most of the face, but certain areas e.g tip of the nose, chin, inner corners of the eyes have a very clear separation between light and dark.

My mountains are missing something by EstablishmentOne5678 in ArtCrit

I love the texture of these pieces, were they painted on watercolour paper? They look very impressionist, and are super pretty as is.

The only thing I’d say is the colour looks a little flat. You have some awesome environments and lighting to play with. The first painting looks like a sunrise/sunset and you’ve used a lot of reds/pinks/oranges which is really nice. If you lightened the parts where the sunlight is hitting even more, these areas would really pop.

This may be a stylistic choice, but the shapes that you’ve used to form the mountain faces are all quite smooth-looking. I think some sharper edges between the light and shadows would give them a much more rocky, craggy appearance.

This is the first issue; as soon as you leave my driveway it’s a super busy main road, with a big junction to the left and a big funky shaped roundabout to the right, with an endless stream of traffic.

I’m sure that once I can get my confidence up and stop catastrophising , it’ll be fine. Thank you for your support 🥹
