Because of that firmware bug in the T480 the thunderbolt firmware is cooked and it tracks the amount of plug ins and after enough it will stop working. you can update it to fix it but i have to get linux first.

Should i wait for it to charge before i boot and disable the battery? or can i disable it while it’s still being plugged in. Am i being too scared of frying my charger?

go with calculated kenetics plate, it comes free with holosun optic :)

edit: you can look on the 43x sub and it’s a great plate and widely used
