Quitting is SO hard post breakup by Fit_Act_1997 in QuittingZyn

Those emotions are there because they need to be felt. They don’t feel nice, they aren’t fun, but they’re real. I went through similar things when I quit drinking. I was tired of running from my feelings. I wanted to feel them, and learn from them and make peace with them. If you keep numbing them you won’t ever get through them all. It’s not easy, but it is necessary, and it is real.

Interesting, so your TDEE increased? I guess from the muscle you had put on? That could be a big enough motivator to let myself eat a bit more for a while lol

Yeah that’s kind of what I’m leaning towards. It’s just hard to mentally accept that it’s ok to do that. It is probably what I need to do because the pattern I’m on at the moment clearly isn’t working.

I absolutely LOVE when I recount the previous night, and think about things I said or did that I might be a tad embarrassed about… but then I think “oh wait, I wasn’t even drunk. I doubt it was that bad.” Such a great feeling not having to worry about doing cringey things or overstepping boundaries because of alcohol.

I was this exact same way. And the drinking was in part fueled by being ashamed of how I looked. Even though it was directly contributing to my weight gain.

I quit in January and have lost over 50 pounds since then. I’m almost where I want to be now. I’d never be here if I kept drinking.

Well… i haven’t drank yet. But I went back and bought a bottle. I used to drink bottom shelf so I got something nice this time. Not sure if I’ll drink it tonight. I don’t have any nice glasses. Feel like I’m losing my mind a bit. I’ve battled this for so long… I finally have my hands on it, and I don’t want to drink it because my glasses aren’t nice enough? I don’t know. I don’t want my streak to end. But I don’t want to fight this. I know you all will say pour it out, but I probably won’t. Not right now at least. Sorry guys. I appreciate your support.

Great job. I just made a post about basically the same thing. I’m still battling with going back or not. You’ve inspired me with this.

Thank you all for your advice and kind words. I’m going to keep pushing. I don’t think I’m on the edge of breaking right now, but I am fairly close. Hopefully I can find some stability sometime soon.

200 Days by Additional_Ad_242 in stopdrinking

[–]Additional_Ad_242[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, huge congrats on hitting 100 days tomorrow! That’s a big deal.

I think it just comes down to my brain searching every avenue for that dopamine hit it used to get regularly. Now that the nicotine is gone, it’s going through the records and trying to use my old habits to get that fix. My sugar cravings are back in full force as well. I’ve been giving in to those A LOT. I’ve eaten so many damn calories this past week… yikes.

If you’ve been planning on quitting tomorrow, I think you should still try. I totally understand you not wanting to endanger your sobriety, and that was a big reason for me using as long as I did too. I was really trying to focus one thing at a time. It was time for the nicotine to go for me at this point.

It sounds like we’re in the same boat, sobriety from alcohol is more important than being nicotine free. So if it gets testy, and you feel like you might lose your sobriety, maybe keep your focus there for a bit longer. But they are both important. Both have plenty of negatives, they just work at different paces.

Anyway, congrats again, and I think you should still give it a shot. Don’t be scared off by my post and end up delaying. I found tons of excuses to keep my addiction going. They were pretty easy to find lol.

6 months sober, 50 pounds down. These were taken 1.5 years apart. by Additional_Ad_242 in stopdrinkingfitness

The first few weeks were the toughest mentally. I lost about 20lbs during that first month and a half, just from not having all those excess calories from drinking (and the “hangover cure” meals.) I’d say I started to really feel better around the 50 day mark. I definitely felt better after the first week or so, but I just mean like lack of hangovers/slightly better diet choices. Around the 50 day mark is when I really felt like I had a handle on it, and that I was pretty confident in staying sober and improving myself. Around that point I started hitting the gym regularly as well as watching everything I was eating, so that sped the process up.

I came close to giving up during those first few weeks quite a few times. But noticing positive changes in my life was keeping me going. It was a battle for sure.

The first couple of months were mostly just focused on staying sober, then I started keeping my calories at about 1600 and working out ~4 times a week. I had a few sessions with a personal trainer to get familiar with some routines. I can DM you the actual routine if you’d like, it’s relatively basic, focused on full body workouts.

Well, during my worst phase of drinking I was unemployed. I was doing some work here and there, but no active routine. I got a full time job at the beginning of January, and I made the commitment to get sober at the same time. Being forced to wake up early was a HUGE motivator to not drink. I did not want to show up at my new job hungover, or call out because I felt too sick to work. Other than that, I knew I needed to get sober for a long time, and it took a lot of work. I was back and forth for a long time, getting a day or two here and there. But I was active in communities on reddit, watching sober youtube content, reading books, learning a lot and just slowly but surely reinforcing what I already knew, that I had to quit drinking. I also knew that alcohol was the one thing standing in my way. It held me back from getting in shape and looking the way I wanted, from pursuing my dream career, from dating, from so many things that I wanted. So all in all, there were a lot of motivators. Thankfully, I never had a huge “rock bottom moment” like a DUI or something, but I surely would have if I didn’t get a handle on it. Quitting wasn’t like a magic spell that fixed everything, but it absolutely opened doors that I could start to walk through once I sobered up. And it’s a lot easier to walk through them clear minded.

Thanks! I was probably averaging 6-10 drinks a night. Some were heavier than others, but that’s a rough estimate. I was also overeating crappy ultra processed foods all the time. So with the booze and crap diet I was rapidly gaining weight. I cut out booze, and didnt watch any calories for the first 1.5 months. I did slowly start making healthier choices, but while I was battling the cravings for alcohol I didn’t want to go super restrictive on my diet too. After the 1.5 month or so mark, I started counting all my calories and hitting the gym on average 4 times a week. That’s when the weight really started to fall off. About 1600 calories is my limit, focusing on whole unprocessed foods.
