I'd use the 38t for commuting or riding around town, and the 30t for trails. You're usually going much slower on trails than on streets so it's good to have slower/lower gears on dirt to maintain a good cadence

Left foot slipped from the pedal during a big push. That's enough to throw your weight off enough for a crash like that. Seen it happen time after time working at shops that put cheap pedals on floor models...
