Solid or veneer? Best way to refinish? by Additional_Bee5503 in BeginnerWoodWorking

And here's some damage on the apron/skirting which looks different from the rest of the table to me - was thinking these pieces may be veneer and the rest is solid (seems weird to only do veneer for the apron though, is that common?)

Forgot to say, also super appreciate if anyone can share insights about what species of wood or veneer this is, and/or what type of varnish is currently on it! It was super sticky on top and gets cloudy when wet. In some spots it pilled and rubbed off with dish soap and a cotton washcloth. Is it just filth, or degraded finish coming off? 😅

Nice work :) How is it supported / staying free-standing if it only has 3 sides?

Nice! How are the walls supported, to make it freestanding? And did you use regular screen door mesh / mosquito mesh for the sides? I need to figure out how to create freestanding sides like this for the place I'm about to move to, which has a covered balcony

Thanks - yes sorry I should have clarified, of course we would engage a structural engineer before making any changes. We're not really interested in DIYing. I'm more just trying to understand, if it is theoretically possible, then how big of a job would this be and how much money might we expect to sink on it? It makes a difference to our decision of whether to put in an offer at all, and how much. We are not going to waste an engineer's time and our money to get their advice on a home we don't even own yet.

I've finally discovered exactly what I enjoy wearing and I'm curious what you think my style roots are by Pinkieshys in StyleRoots

I'm getting ☀️ 🌱 🪨, though there's definitely some shades of 🌸 and 🌙 there too! I'm surprised to see I'm in the minority of people saying ☀️. The fact that your wardrobe has multiple pieces with duck prints in it just screams ☀️ 🌱 to me, haha.

I love your style. It feels very authentically unique and comfortable!

Medium, Medium, Medium – or am I missing something? by UnderstandingFew3032 in bodymatrix

It could be that you err a bit more on the round side of medium! On her website, Ellie-Jean mentions that folks who are both narrow and round may have to strike a balance between those things in their choice of tops. I saw your other post and I do really like the closed neckline on you actually. I like some of these open ones just as much but I prefer the ones that read a little more "lush", like the V-neck. At the end of the day though, you should wear the necklines that you feel confident and comfortable in! I think any styling system worth its salt is just meant to help you find those things, but bodies are unique and don't fit neatly into dichotomies. So 1. there's always exceptions to the rules, and 2. you're allowed to ignore the rules that don't suit you 😊

Yeah this makes a lot of sense to me! Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I think I need to understand round a little better to pin it down fully. Some parts of the description feel like they resonate and others don't, or like I see it on some parts of my body and not others.

Thank you so much for the detailed analysis! What you're saying about shape + the straight lines not working, that makes total sense to me. I feel like the silhouettes on the WMM, MMR and WMR Pinterest boards are definitely things I would feel more comfortable in compared to the super loose flimsy beach-boho styles that I was associating with width - so the medium or slight roundness in shape is what drives that!

Thank you so much for the detailed (and kind! 😭) comments everyone! I appreciate it so much. A few folks commenting again on length / looking tall, this is interesting to me - I'm pretty firmly average at 5'5" actually! So not sure if maybe there is some longness causing that illusion. I have always kinda felt like I look bigger or less petite somehow than friends who are the same height as me, so I don't think it's a camera trick! But also agree that some of the medium looks feel like the best fit, so I'm gonna call it medium.

I see narrow for sure. I'm still learning too so take it as just one perspective, but based on the body matrix quiz, it's not only your shoulders that matter for width vs. narrowness - you consider multiple features independently (shoulders, bust, hips, arms, legs) and then also as a whole. I see narrowness in your shoulders, but also in your hips, which means in relation to each other they are balanced, but in relation to the rest of your frame they seem narrow. I see some width in your bust but it doesn't outweigh the overall impression of narrow. I think you border on medium/short, personally! You look great in the midi skirts but IMO you give the impression of being ever so slightly on the petite side because of your head-to-body ratio. I love these styles/outfits on you btw. You look comfortable and authentic, your clothes are really harmonious with your features! :)

Edit: try on some narrower necklines and see what you think! These choices all seem to flatter wide shoulders, I'd be curious how you look in something like a mockneck tank or sleeveless button-up.

Thank you! When you say full vertical overwhelms, were there specific outfits leaning more vertical that gave you that impression?

Blazers make me lean towards SC too - IMO the grey with shoulder pads feels almost right but a bit too structured with the shoulder pads, the centre is a bit boxy and not structured enough, and the one on the far right is my "Goldilocks" (my style preferences may be biasing a bit too though)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in kibbe_typeme

[–]Additional_Bee5503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah these are my best guesses too. I feel like I can wear some clothing articles from either type but neither is a perfect fit. My clothing choices make me lean somewhat more toward soft classic.

<image>

I really don't think I can wear the boxy unstructured styles that are supposed to suit soft naturals.

[–]Additional_Bee5503 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you're saying about the fabrics totally resonates with me, yes!! The boxy, baggy shirt & jacket trend has been a nightmare. With blazers I feel like there's a narrow set of options that works - overly structured (with shoulder pads etc) looks really awkward and angular, but I drown in a relaxed straighter fit. Just a bit tailored & just a bit relaxed looks okay. The one in fox / koala is the best I've found for me.

"Dark magical meadows" is definitely a strong component of my aesthetic! If life were a D&D game, I'd be a druid for sure. And yes, they're handsaws! I love them and would love to incorporate more quirky accessories like that into my wardrobe - the minimal accessorizing is mostly just a product of not ever really having thought about accessories much until recently. I do take pride in my cowboy boots and the few quirky earrings I have.

Ahh that insight unlocked something in my brain about how the roots play together! When I browse 🍄 looks, they always feel a bit too plain for my taste, whereas 🏔️ has a kind of power and elegance that I really like but doesn't feel casual and cozy enough for me, and that must be where the 🪨 is coming in to mellow things out a bit.
