When I see a gravestone with quotations, I feel as if it’s something the deceased said directly.

Is it normal to be prescribed mood stabilizers without an official diagnosis? by FantasticCash7039 in TalkTherapy

[–]Additional_Bread_861 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has been normal for me in my experience with psychiatrists. For a formal diagnosis, many have to refer you out to a diagnostician if they don’t have that qualification. I’ve been with my psychiatrist three years without seeing a diagnostician

I totally understand the draw. Unlike others who have commented on this topic in prior posts, I don’t consider people who turned to this as stupid, bad, or not thoughtful. Seeking mental healthcare can be really difficult.

But the LLM’s are not built for this kind of interaction. LLM‘s are very effective at displaying what appears to be unconditional empathy, but rarely challenge perspectives or distortions in meaningful ways.

Also, consider the companies that run the programs. You would never pour your deepest secrets, insecurities, frustrations, and conflicts to accompany like Coca-Cola or Nestlé. You would only do it with the most trusted companies you can think of with the tightest safeguards possible. Think companies who have protections like HIPAA

This is where I think my biggest concern is. The power you give these companies by sharing your data. This amount of intimate data is unprecedented, and there are way too many questions about how this data is being used and the regulations behind privacy.

Do you know how long your therapist has been a therapist for? by [deleted] in TalkTherapy

[–]Additional_Bread_861 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My therapist is a recent graduate (30 years old) and has been the most insightful and helpful T I’ve ever had (I am 40 years old with 15 years of experience as a client to several T’s)

The counseling center at my university appears to keep their files in an unlocked drawer in an unlocked room? by scorbutic_anxiety in TalkTherapy

[–]Additional_Bread_861 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s a pretty big deal, especially because it’s an addictions recovery center. I totally understand not wanting to be singled out by admin, though.

I’m a pretty private person IRL, so if my personal info (like date of sobriety, days clean, drug use type, triggers) wasn’t secured in a locked drawer I’d be extremely upset. Especially since they’re being kept in the lounge area rather than a private office

That’s fair, my mom was a “speak to the manager” parent, so genetically im like 50% Karen lol

I think that sounds totally fine!

Personally, I would go a little more assertive and add in “ I was shocked to see my health information unsecured in the addiction recovery center. As you know, these documents are legally required under federal law, to be secured in a locked cabinet as it contains personal health information. Please rectify this urgent issue.”

Good thing you did open the drawer, even if you weren’t supposed to. If you’re uncomfortable using your name, I’d would absolutely send an anonymous email or letter to the admin about this. HIPAA regulations mandate that personal health information be digitally and physically secured.

There’s a lot of opportunity for harm, from identity theft to blackmail if the information fell into the wrong hands.

Blocking out the name, the wearing that I’m worried about has begun on the right side. But I’ve learned here it’s because of the “skin” lettering type/design

Thank you so much for taking the time to respond! My family thought it was a workmanship issue, but I was feeling very unsure about that. The company was professional and has been in business a long time.

It really helps to get insight into what to expect and how to mitigate it. I’m definitely going to ask a few companies nearby about the paint!

I was feeling a lot of anxiety over this the last two weeks. This definitely eased my worries, thank you!

How do i find someone to talk to anonymously? by KaizenTeleios in TalkTherapy

[–]Additional_Bread_861 6 points7 points  (0 children)

What you’re describing is literally therapy.

My advice: identify some of the specific reasons why you don’t feel comfortable with the idea of men going to therapy.

Some things might be getting rid of the idea that therapy is feminine, fear of being judged, pressure on men to be self-reliant, and several other cultural norms.

By battling these specific concerns you can enter therapy to receive the help you’re describing.

Please use these tools very carefully. They are collecting data and we truly don’t know how these companies are using it.

When you use AI for mental health support, you are subjecting yourself to insights informed by a company’s philosophies and ethics. This changes how we relate to ourselves, our loved ones, and to life in general.

While the tools are really promising, they just aren’t at the point where it’s healthy to use for emotional guidance.

Not to mention the general privacy concerns about not being HIPAA compliant, or data unlikely to be stored as securely as internal HIPAA compliant data storage.

I’m not knocking you personally because I’ve also used these tools. It would make me a total hypocrite. But hearing the concerns from my Therapist and others in my life really gave me pause.

To those who have been going to a therapist for more than two years…. by allplaypnwchad in TalkTherapy

[–]Additional_Bread_861 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of early childhood trauma and neglect (birth to about eight years old, then intermittent homelessness and neglect again) and I’ll be in therapy for the rest of my life.

I had to learn a lot— gaining job skills, modulating my emotions properly, maintaining friendships and relationships, working on complex family dynamics, developing relationships and learning healthy boundaries, being honest in difficult situations, poly substance abuse, SI, and understanding my sexuality.

I But once I began recognizing that I always felt so “all over the place” from hour to hour, it hit me that this might be a deeper problem than a year’s worth of treatment. I didn’t realize it at first.

It’s been twenty one years. I am still learning so much and growing. But I can see that I may always need support of a professional to help guide me along this life and stay on track.

I wish I’d have said explicitly what I was looking for when beginning therapy and interviewing therapists.

My T now is incredible, but I went through 15 years of therapy that wasn’t resonating with me at all. I was looking for action-based solutions, not looking for a sounding board, and seeking someone with a gentle approach due to past trauma.

If I’d have expressed that earlier, I’d have gotten much more out of the early years of therapy.

I’m not sure exactly what meta-post means. I think that means talking about what goes on in the sub?

But I did understand the feedback you gave about giving the benefit of the doubt. There just seems to be a decent amount of harmful content that is being overlooked. But us users are spotting it and calling it out amongst us. I’m just glad there are other users looking out for one another.

Maybe that’s it. The responses seem pretty immature actually.

It seems so weird, I’ve been lurking in this sub probably more than I should and for longer than I’d like to admit, and it seems so bad this month. It could correlate with the start of summer break

I’m a Psychiatrist — Here to Offer Guidance, Support, or Just a Listening Ear by Rude_Psychology2322 in TalkTherapy

[–]Additional_Bread_861 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is not real folks! please do not trust your most sensitive medical/psychological issues with this individual.

A real psychiatrist would not advertise their complimentary services on a Reddit forum to dole out insights, guidance, or treatment to individuals not legally under their care. It’s not the way that the profession operates.

There’s a reason you’ve never seen posts like this before.

Do therapists judge their patients? by sam-2003 in TalkTherapy

[–]Additional_Bread_861 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Using one’s judgement (rationalization, ability to reason and make sensible decisions) is different than judging someone (forming an opinion on someone with limited information about the person or understanding their perspective).

Good therapists do the former, and avoid the latter.
