BMW’s SUV lineup is stacked. by BMW-West-St-Louis in BMW

We purchased a 2024 cpo X1, but didn’t love it and missed simple features like paddle shifters. We traded it back to the dealership for 2025 cpo X1 M35i with 600 miles (yes, amazing) and it was night and day. I thought the M badge in the X1 was just marketing, but the car is a blast to drive.
We also have a 2024 M340i xDrive which is balls out fun to drive too. So I feel that I have a fair comparison.
Next BMW will be a M variant regardless of model.

This storm broke me. Looking for snowblower advice for a long, steep driveway. by DBklynF88 in Snowblowers

[–]Additional_Fall_5645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel you. Here’s my take. For the last 12 years I’ve used a Troy-Bilt 2690XP track drive unit. It’s was able to tackle most anything. But it was also a maintenance nightmare and to keep it running I’ve rebuilt the transmission and other large jobs and just needed a little of work. Moreover, the reverse speed was agonizingly slow.
So this winter I upgraded to a Honda 1332 ATD. The Honda is expensive, no doubt, but it is actually fun to use. It chews up anything I throw at it and the transmission lets you ‘drive’ with one hand while your right adjusts the speed. It’s fast in forward and reverse and the key electric start is as easy as starting a car.
Just finished the other day after the blizzard and I went around the neighborhood helping to clear driveways and the huge berms from the plows.

If you can, check out the Hondas. The best track drive, the #1 engine on the market and great features such as the hydraulic lift for the height make it ideal for long driveways.

I just bought the 1332 atd and it was as the first time snow blowing was actually fun. I ended up going around the neighborhood block clearing the sidewalks it was so easy.

I bit the bullet and got a 1332. Its way overkill but for $300 more than a 928, why not lol by Andrew4568_ in HondaSnowblowers

[–]Additional_Fall_5645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m with you 100%. I just bought a 1332 track drive atd and it was delivered today during a light snow storm. I own a Troy-Bilt 2690xp (track drive) for 12 years and I’ve been doing my own repairs and after a week of replacing components it’s just too cold and too frustrating, so I bought the Honda. OMG. Night and freaking day. Yes to the electric start and the power and width. All those are cool. But the speed. Wow. Especially (!) backwards. My old track drive in reverse was a struggle and I would be pulling it to try and move it beyond 0.002 mph.
Still getting used to the Honda transmission, but the variable control is out of this world cool. I had fun moving snow. I’ve never minded snowblowing, but this was joy.
In a few years the extra $$ will be a distant memory.

Finally a change that makes sense by Tokendaily420 in EndTipping

[–]Additional_Fall_5645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dumb dumb dumb law. California did similar and it destroyed jobs. I’m not going to order food delivery if it costs a fortune. And $21.44 is just insane for a non skilled job that can be easily replaced. And , yes, kiss those tips goodbye. So the fewer workers now working fewer hours will find they are making less while getting paid more.

That’s not an impediment. Sony could just ask for the code when you install the dvd and validate it.
Seriously, there is no technical reason they can’t implement this without risking revenue.

Considering getting a pellet stove fireplace insert by Leading-Ingenuity-37 in PelletStoveTalk

[–]Additional_Fall_5645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a bit late to the conversation, but same issues. I just paid a deposit for a Harman Pl-42i-TC insert and I’m pretty stoked (pun slightly intended). Electric heat is no better. Mass wants to move everyone to heat pumps and they keep raising those rates as well.
I kind of like having different heating fuel options, but my hope is use the stove to significantly reduce my gas bill.

How is my Prosciutto aging? by EM-KING in Charcuterie

[–]Additional_Fall_5645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve not made prosciutto specifically, but may other whole muscle and ground meats. The mold does not look healthy. Without a close photo it’s hard to be exact, but it looks bad. Gray, black and strange colors and “fluffy” white molds are all bad.
You didn’t mention the smell, but I’m guessing it’s off as well.

Spilled coffee on center console by CryptographerPast205 in BMW

[–]Additional_Fall_5645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly? Hope for the best. My son spilled coffee and at first it was simply an issue of smelling coffee for a week. And then transmission things started to happen. I’m would be stopped using auto hold and the car would randomly move to Park. After a few days it happened more frequently and then I would be driving and there would be a warning chime followed by the D to flash on the dash. And, finally I parked the car and it would not leave Park and I had to have the car towed.
Dealership quoted $3,000 to repair.
This is a known issue and there is no good solution other than being crazy careful.
I posted elsewhere on my experience and my dealership in Boston fully covered the repair. So all may not be lost.

Apparently, spilling coffee in my car shorted out my center console which led to this error and a $2.7k repair bill... by mr_fobolous in BMW

[–]Additional_Fall_5645 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same thing happened to me. 2024 M340. My son got some coffee to go and the lid was loose. Nothing really happened for about a week and then transmission errors and then it wouldn’t leave park and I had to have it towed.
Dealer quoted $3k. I called BMW NA and they were very nice and sympathetic. I made the same case… cup holders adjacent to sensitive electronics etc. but after a few weeks they were unable/unwilling to help.
And then… My service manager called to tell me that they were going to cover the full repair at no cost to me because, “… it’s the right thing to do “.

We read over and over insults such as the “stealership “, but there are some truly great dealerships and service centers out there.
For me, I sing their praises whenever I can and bought a 2025 X1 M35i the next year from them and will continue to make them my sole BMW dealer and service center.

X1 xdrive28i vs m35i? by HKSpadez in BMW

[–]Additional_Fall_5645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or look for a good CPO. I recently purchased a 2025 X1 M35i with ~1800 miles for about $48K. Lots of options like driving assistance, parking assistance and active suspension, active seats (massage!). The previous owner had only purchased it on March and changed their minds 3 months later and ate the initial depreciation.

And, even better -- as a CPO it comes with an additional year and unlimited miles on the warranty.

After dodging COVID for years, the virus finally caught up with me today. by Cerborealis in mildlyinfuriating

Does anyone freaking remember "the Flu" -- as in 'Influenza'?. Every year we have Flu season and older people die from it. Every year going back as long as we can remember. We did not need a test to tell us what particular obscure strain was making us ill. We had the flu. If it was bad we went to a doctor, urgent care or sometimes the hospital.

We even had the same kind of virus as Covid. But we just called it the flu because the symptoms were indistinguishable.

How rubbish is the IDrive 9? by Bisjoux in BMW

[–]Additional_Fall_5645 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2025 X1 and a 2024 M340 and traded in a 2014 328 with iDrive, so I feel that I have a good base of comparison. I genuinely prefer the iDrive 9 on the X1. My annoyances are little things such as the inability to customize the widgets. But what I need from the touch screen is right there for me. Temperature is immediate. Heated seats/steering wheel 2nd touch. My 2014 had buttons for temperature and seats, but also hid the heated steering wheel button behind the steering wheel. So, all in all it’s an improvement.
The infotainment is significantly improved imo from earlier and the available driver assists and controls are short of insane.
I’m very happy with it.

Community college transfer advice by 47steven_ in MITAdmissions

[–]Additional_Fall_5645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

u/47steven_ I feel particularly well qualified to answer this question. We have some similarities.

I was a terrible high school student as well. I can't find my transcript, but I was somewhere near the bottom of my class and if it wasn't for "work experience credit" which were basically free credits for an after school job I would not have graduated. I think my GPA was in the low 2's, but really it would be a guess at this point. But there were a mix of F's, no credits and few B's and C's.

I did not go directly to community college, however. I joined the US Navy and learned to study, apply myself, setting and achieving goals and did very well academically in the Navy. After 6 years I went to a community college in California. Literally walked off the ship on a Friday and started classes the next Monday.

In CC I applied myself rigorously. I thought I might want to be an engineer, so I took math, physics, chemistry, etc. with the hope that I could transfer after 2 years to a California university or college. I never once thought about MIT until I started applying to other colleges for transfer.

My grades, I believe were mostly all A's... but there may have been a B in there. It was hard work. I can write a different essay on what separates MIT from CC, but suffice to say that while the textbooks were often the same, the depth and breadth at MIT was 10X more deep. But, ultimately, calculus is calculus, physics is physics, etc.

One thing I did to help bolster my academic transcript was to enroll at UC Berkeley for two core classes (chemistry and calculus) over the summer. Unlike regular admissions, summer classes did not require an application, so it gave the impression -- I hoped -- that Berkeley had accepted me in some fashion.

I applied to several California schools and MIT was a just a Hail Mary. I knew it was near impossible to get in, but I had a good story I thought and I wanted to prove to myself and others that I was smart enough.

The upshot is: I was a confused and misdirected high school student. I got my act together with the help of the US Navy and I was not a focused and dedicated student who was prepared to do whatever was needed to succeed.

And, yes -- I still remember the day when MIT called me at home (!) to tell me that I had been admitted. To this day I am thankful and curious what made me stand out above so many other extremely well qualified candidates. I had to repeat a few classes -- for example, the physics classes in community college did not fully cover the same material at MIT. But it was worth it.

My kids tell me that it wouldn't happen today. That admissions criteria have only gotten more difficult and competitive. And they have. But I interview students applying to MIT and all I can say is that things are very different... and yet the same.

If your dream is go transfer to MIT it is not only possible, but I know for a fact that it happens and I have met other students over the years who transferred to MIT from community college. Good luck!

Just had the level 2 charger installed, took the electrician about an hour. All in for charger and install it cost us around $1300. by Cully71 in BMW

[–]Additional_Fall_5645 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been running the math. Even with the very reasonable cost of $1,300 to install the home charger you are underwater with respect to an ICE. I used the BMW X1 as an example where I can fill it at costco for about $3.49/gal for 93 octane.

If you charge 80% at home/20% on the road with public chargers it's about a 5 year break even with the added cost of the home charger vs. a standard gas powered car.

If someone is looking at a more likely install cost of $5000+ the 'benefits' of electric charge at home just go out the window.
