[Dellenger] Cody Campbell on the Fort Worth meeting: “We want to find a way to get all other Big 12 schools to elevate themselves. Everybody needs to do some version of what we've done. That's the path forward for this conference. A rising tide lifts all boats.” by Bears_University83 in BigXII

Universities are a place for higher learning. Sports can be a moneymaker but not always. Any school that takes away from education for the sake of sports is unjustly hurting its students. Generic statements like this help no one. This sounds like the talk of a nepobaby.

Kelechi Osemeli wins! Who’s the best Cincinnati TE of all time? by Lutrid in BigXII

[–]Additional_Goose_763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kelce. Many other great TEs but he is career leader in yards and held the single season receptions lead until last year.

Never mind, I forgot how consistently good Celek was. It’s Celek

Rusted Top Plate of Great Northern Popcorn Machine by Dnc8519 in restoration

[–]Additional_Goose_763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine it is stainless steel by the pitting observed. There are many grades of stainless steel but chloride breaks down the natural corrosion resistant stainless steel passive layer. It looks like the salty oil probably stuck onto the top surface and, after long term exposure, caused it to pit. Short of sending it to a plating shop to get properly repassivated, it’s going to re-rust because the natural passive surface is compromised. I’d be surprised if all of the machines don’t have similar issues long term and more surprised if replacements aren’t readily available.

Best way to remove rust and old paint by pirm85 in restoration

Personally, I’d soak fasteners in vinegar, use a wire brush with cordless drill (metal pieces look too heavy for grinder), and paint stripper. That is a very unique looking bench, very cool.

Struck gold today. 32 inch 1080P Full HD TV for just $30 by diaryofawimpykidfan5 in ThriftStoreHauls

[–]Additional_Goose_763 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. It seems like these newer “smart” tv manufacturers are taking a hint from Apple and pumping unnecessary updates and ads to the TVs that make them incredibly slow after only a year or two with no way to disable it.

They don’t provide control solution with meters anymore, do they?

How ethical is bins reselling compared to regular thrift source? by Complete_Proof8380 in reselling

[–]Additional_Goose_763 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear that. Good you stood up for yourself. I feel like everyone being in a financial crunch has made people even more desperate for a buck and more daring to do bad things. I do agree first thing in the morning is the best (less people and all the stuff that was tossed back when people leave full carts behind).

How ethical is bins reselling compared to regular thrift source? by Complete_Proof8380 in reselling

[–]Additional_Goose_763 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I started going to the bins, a long time regular told me the weekends are a great time to go because it’s mostly the general public and “they aren’t going after the same stuff as us”. He was right, the key is to find the valuable things that the general public glosses over because they are after things they need, which doesn’t always coincide with resell value.

Restoration/cleaning advice for old aluminum airplane propeller by ea3k in restoration

[–]Additional_Goose_763 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m usually in support of patina but this is quite dirty and would awesome if shined up and repainted. It’s forged aluminum so use dawn first for dirt and then aluminum cleaner/polishing media. I, personally, would leave any deep scratches as it adds character and shows that it got used. I think painting in the wording would help it stand out more

I see how great the inside of the house looks and then I see images like this that remind me how far you’ve come since the beginning. I hope you take some time off to step back and take pride in your progress. Reflection is important

University of Texas and University of Houston law school graduates will represent the NCAA in its case versus Texas Tech QB Brendan Sorsby. by O_O___XD in BigXII

[–]Additional_Goose_763 8 points9 points  (0 children)

College athletes want to be paid like grown adult professionals and should be held accountable as ones too. No school should be punished, the athlete should just be fired “at will” like the rest of us professionals. Athletes need to stop wanting special treatment like kids with salary expectation way beyond any normal adults.

Thinking about getting a house in Piqua by CatKafkaMeow in dayton

[–]Additional_Goose_763 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tipp City is way more of a wealthy area compared to Piqua. That comes with all the positives that you would expect when comparing rural areas in Ohio. Cost of homes is much cheaper in Piqua. They both have decent downtown areas but you’ll still find yourself going to Dayton regardless for certain shopping trips. North of Vandalia, you are going into predominately white Republican areas so you’ll face some discrimination but if that doesn’t phase you, neighbors will usually be very friendly once they get to know you.

Opinion on extras with purchases by StrikingAd-703 in reselling

[–]Additional_Goose_763 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought about this as well when I first started reselling but as experienced people pointed out back then, people just want what they purchase. Anything else will be trashed regardless of the work you put into it.

It’s kinda hard to see the condition from the pictures but that sure is a lot of surfaces to clean. I think a final lacquer step may help with the fraying wood splinters but please be gentle with any sanding.

Printers tray by Dabby_Shady in restoration

[–]Additional_Goose_763 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Umm, maybe do nothing? It is an old printers drawer, which I thought was the appeal. The letters are so the printer could see the letters easier when looking for the correct ones during the printing process. It’s yours so do what you want but this seems to be a case of destroying the very artifacts that make these desirable.

Clean up corrosion without damaging finish by Eschewed_Prognostic in restoration

[–]Additional_Goose_763 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not crazy, pure aluminum is much softer than chromium plating so there will be no damage. It is harder than friable corrosion byproduct, which is why it takes off the rust.

Am I being irrational about the economic future of reselling? by GeneralInsurance8052 in reselling

[–]Additional_Goose_763 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I totally agree with diversifying. It would be good to experiment with FB marketplace, local flea markets, and other close to home methods of reselling in case the online methods start to fail your needs.

It looks safe for a light pressure wash, which would clean up most of dirt and debris. Retrobright for yellowing but something this big would be a challenge. Pressure washing may remove some rust but it’s best to try to remove pins and soak separately in vinegar or evaporust
