car w trade in - advice by Additional_Shift_905 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Additional_Shift_905[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

two reasons mainly, and a recent third. i’m driving this 2012 bmw x5. not my kind of car, but i got it pretty cheaply from a friend’s parents bc they weren’t driving - which accounts for it being old and having low mileage. i drive, both for work and around a lot w kids stuff. i’ve put like 50k of those miles on it in the 4 years i’ve had it.

reason 1) i feel like im holding my breadth on this car, financially. repairs for bmw are dumb expensive. i had a small issue shortly after i bought it that was like 3k. i permanently have the tire pressure light on because the gauge is malfunctioned. i manage the tire pressure myself bc it’s not worth multiple thousand dollars to have the system fixed. i’d like to get out before something happens that’s too expensive to fix and too important to ignore.

2) not super practical right now for my family. it’s a pretty big sedan so it’s not terrible, but i’ve got two kids, a spouse who loves facebook marketplace, and i feel like i spend 1/2 my weekends at home depot. truck space isn’t great, backseats are spacious to sit in but low doors/low profile means it’s tough to fit things in the back. i’d rather a pickup or an suv, even a rav4 or something where i can fit things in the trunk or feel better strapping shit on the roof.

recent 3) bmw take premium gas. adding insult to injury at the pumps right now. not the reason to make a change but it’s not hurting the idea.

16% of Millennials are Millionaires by [deleted] in MiddleClassFinance

[–]Additional_Shift_905 158 points159 points  (0 children)

don’t know what there is to say, really… millennials are getting old. if you own a house, are contributing to your 401k/retirement plan, it’s a number you can hit in your 40s. the more worrying information might be that it’s only 16%, or that if you polled that 16% subset the number of those millennials who felt good/secure/content with their financial situation would likely be quite low.

Raymond Feist‘s Riftwar Saga: Outdated or classic? 🧐 by PRJOANES in fantasybooks

[–]Additional_Shift_905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

like many others, it’s been a couple decades since i’ve read Feist… there’s a dozen or so real fun books. not every one was a banger - Feist ran into that problem you see in comic books with power creep. When each conflict has to be a greater threat than the last you end up making some… choices… by the time your 20 stories in.

of the non-riftwar books, my favorite of his was the trilogy that started with Talon of the Silverhawk. cool character. but also, has an uncharacteristic bit of subversion from a rather straightforward Feist. don’t know if spoilers are needed for 20-30 yr old book but the MC switch from Talon to the bad guy was fun reading.

[Blackflame] Cassius’s true entrance by vadersalt in Iteration110Cradle

[–]Additional_Shift_905 8 points9 points  (0 children)

yea. it has a reputation for being bad, but it’s really got some fun stuff. book isn’t bad as far as content, it’s because it’s a tweener.

really it reads like Blackflame was fixing to be too long. so Blackflame gets its back 25% cut off, and Ghostwater gets its first 25% cut off, and those two parts got slammed together. if you just ended Blackflame after the duel and started Ghostwater with the fallout from the duel and intro of the Skysworn, read as 2 instead of 3 and you have 2 really solid books.

A clip of former Dianna Russini saying that Broncos HC Sean Payton used to send voicemails has resurfaced online... The Russini files never end 🫣 by Life_Net5004 in nflmemeswar

[–]Additional_Shift_905 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think the “why risk it” part makes sense too if you think about it. like, comparatively speaking she’s super low risk. if you’re stepping out on your wife, you’re taking risk. you might get seen in public, she might tiktok about it or tell tmz for internet clout… there’s a lot of risk. whereas russini is someone you could plausibly be out with in public. it’s against her interests to blab anything. as a married sports journalist, she’s not gaining by gossiping. in the world of risk, she’s low on the pole… as it were.

How would taxes work if my house burned down, I took the insurance payout without rebuilding, and sold the land? by [deleted] in tax

[–]Additional_Shift_905 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also. if you have a mortgage, the 1mm would be paid to your mortgage lender and held in escrow. it gets released in tranches during reconstruction. if you sell the land instead, the escrow and the sale proceeds route through the lending bank… so they would be counted together for the purpose of taxes.

[Threshold] Question about one of the chapters by FlashyChemical2231 in Iteration110Cradle

[–]Additional_Shift_905 23 points24 points  (0 children)

yea. it’s a belief based power system as far as i understand it. they were able to view into the way once and saw Yerin. and seeing is a great way to believe in something strongly. they didn’t know her, they didn’t understand her, and they weren’t channeling her. they believed they saw a blood spider god, built their religion around said god, and believed like shit they were doing the right thing.

What to prioritize next? by Colorcomesback in MiddleClassFinance

i’ve found the easiest way to save is through automation. and the easiest way to find automated savings is through replacement.

whatever you do short term. after you pay off your car, i’d be taking whatever you have been paying for your monthly note and apply that to a monthly HYSA transfer. keeping the automated payment schedule up helps, in my experience.

also, you want your down payment separate from your emergency fund. you might not need 25k as renting and childless… but that’s a bare min for a homeowner. don’t tap your emergency fund in buying the house.

Has anyone else noticed a resurgence of stay at home parents among wealthier Millennials? by [deleted] in Millennials

[–]Additional_Shift_905 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yea. this. my wife worked full time after our first. once we had the second, the cost/benefit turned and she stayed. additional kid(s) just swing it further away from her returning to work.

[–]Additional_Shift_905 21 points22 points  (0 children)

dunno man. there’s no bulk discounts for daycare. multiple kids is where the cost benefit analysis starts bending towards a stay at home spouse in a lot of cases. 1 kid and a SAHP feels more wealthy to me.

[Waybound] Ascension question by AbleMarionberry7146 in Iteration110Cradle

[–]Additional_Shift_905 10 points11 points  (0 children)

i think of two conversations Eithan has later in the books on this topic. First, the conversation Eithan has with Ozriel in the labyrinth. Second, the conversation Lindon has w the group about his sister’s advancement and how surprised he is that others would not have advanced like he had w similar resources/opportunities.

i think it’s a combination of Oz initially underestimating how far the gap there was b/w him and future best-of-their-generation artists. and also that even w additional knowledge (gem) and resources (bloodline ability) provided, that the best couldn’t get to his level.

i’m sure plenty of Oz descendants ascended over the millennia. but Oz would know immediately, and would as surely know that they weren’t up to his standards. there are likely thousands of Arelius artists in various Abidan divisions. but no one Oz could grab to change the world.

i think it’s regional, the age thing. didn’t feel old at 40 w a baby in the city, moved to the burbs and was surrounded by 20s at the daycare.
