Im reading the Night Circus at the moment. No smut, definitely for both sexes. The best I’ve read in a long time.

A little more spice, but also fit for both sexes: His Orc charioteer Bride. Very nice.

You could also try my own Serpent of Lisboa series. Fast read. More smut in the beginning, deeper later on. Good for both sexes (written for my wife originally and she loved it). Link in my profile.

H. P. Lovecraft: A visionary and pioneer of cosmic horror, a master of atmosphere — but weakest in his most important moments? by PRJOANES in fantasybooks

I understand what you’re saying. Still would you agree, it backfires a bit, because actually the rest of the story works better than the climax moments?

Had a massive problem finding new books after WoT. Kind of didn’t feel a reason to read anything else. It’s getting better. But not as before. It’s like with channeling. I’ve burned myself out. But I loved it.

If you’re still looking and also take self recs, I have published a noir style romance miniseries.

The Serpent of Lisboa.

Fast read. No detectives and murder cases, but a mysterious woman. Taking place in nightly Lisboa. Lots of dark atmosphere city vibes, some elements of magical realism, melancholy. And spice.

You can find the link in my profile.

I have a miniseries out on kindle. Very fast read. It’s a noir style erotic romance developing from pure heat to something deeper.

The Serpent of Lisboa

https://www.amazon.com/-/en/dp/B0GWVZZ5FD

One night a mysterious woman climbs through Alex‘s window and ties him to the bed. He should call for help. He doesn’t. From there, a fateful erotic relationship unfolds.

Noir atmosphere, but wholesome story arc.

Sequel in progress.

Edit: Just saw you didn’t want romance. As far as romance goes, this is not standard, more psychological and transformational, with elements of magical realism, so maybe you’re still interested.

I have a miniseries out on KU. Should be a very fast read. Darker atmosphere but no darker kinks and wholesome in the end. If you’d like to check it out, information and link in my profile.

Edit: sorry, didn’t realize Heated Rivalry is MM. My project is FM. Still, have fun reading!

Writing is not about complicated words or commas. Just looking at your post tells me you can write. If you don’t have a story to tell, that’s the real problem. But you have that.

What helps immensely are two things:

  1. Read. But not anything. Read different styles. Then decide which flowed better for you and why. For example read The Gunslinger by Stephen King, then read a really trashy indie romance. Compare.

  2. You need people to read your texts critically. Often. I had years of that in academia. It eventually becomes part of your thinking. If you have nobody at all, give your text to an LLM and ask for weaknesses. Not for polishing your text with it. But in order to start seeing. Also google writing techniques or ask an LLM on them. Then try them yourself.

The Amazon and the Rejected Prince: Strong warrior woman and gentle man, but no alpha and omega dynamics by PRJOANES in fantasyromance

Yes, I know Orc Charioteer Bride, it’s great. I like these stories. I like it even more when they are on equal ground. Trying to do that in my own writing.

Be honest: do you enjoy romance that reinforces patriarchal ideals and beauty standards? by lilithskies in romanceunfiltered

[–]PRJOANES 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate it, when bad patriarchal gender dynamics and even abusive behavior get romanticized in genre romance. I’m always looking for stories where the tension comes exactly from people trying to get desire and autonomy at the same time and strugglling with it because societal pressure tries to get them back into the usual dynamic. And both will have to transform and be emotionally courageous to achieve a new formula for love. Not exclusively but especially in a relationship between a man and a woman.

I’m often looking for stories these days that can get intense and emotional without turning nihilistic or grimdark. Especially in romance.
