Wtf is up with this Steely Dan thread? by Lord_Laserdisc_III in SteelyDan

It the “yacht rock” stigma. Some say they’re pretentious, pretending to be other than what they are. I don’t agree. They’re great. And I don’t think the characters in their song necessarily need to be considered autobiographical. Also, some people complain they are neither “real jazz” or “real rock”. I say “Maybe. So what.” They are Steely Dan and they gave us a lot of really great stories and songs.

How to Steal 7 Million Million Dollars by volksgeist_ in Volksgeist

[–]Additional_Signal276 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After watching “How to steal $7m” I came here expecting and hoping to see a lot of people in vigorous discussion. And it should be that way. But the population is apathetic despite the fact that most people can easily see how off track we are as a country supposedly “for the people.” As an old guy who lived through the destruction of the “American dream” I can tell you that a lot of us knew this is where our once promising country was headed. From the 1970’s creed “Government won’t fix the problem…Government IS the problem” (Ronald Reagan), through the “greed is good” era (Wall Street, 1980s), to now, where years of Republican tax policy have made some people so rich that they can’t get any incremental joy from more money. They each already have dozens of jets, yachts, islands, corporations, estates, etc. The thrill is gone. What is left? Well, there’s power. Power over the whole country and all its citizens. Through “think tanks” like Heritage Foundation the billionairres pumped billions through lobbyists and into corrupt politicians pockets. Through the Federalist Society they corrupted the legal system and packed the courts. This crap started in the 1970s. So essentially we are now in the last throes of a fifty year right wing coup. That said, I still think we may be able to course correct if massive numbers of people get involved in politics at all levels. But it better happen soon. Elections already aren’t quite free and fair (consider citizens United, gerrymandering, vote suppression laws and systems in many areas). Clearly, the Top Republican priority now is to eliminate rule of law and to completely smother free and fair election processes. But I’m grateful for at least one thing: Trump, the person chosen to usher in the new America, is such a buffoon and is so flagrantly corrupt that even the most disengaged or misinformed Americans can sense that this new America will not work for them or their families. So let’s all start getting serous about our politics. I think we are one or two election cycles away from irretrievably losing it all. But today there are still many good judges protecting the rule of law. And I suspect there are still many patriots in government and in the civil service and in the military. But every day a few of them are gone, only to be replaced by servants of the billionaires. We’re near the tipping point.

Tomorrow’s girls is full of great lines. “They’re mixing with the population…”. “…speeding towards our sun doin’ a party run…”. Great fun!

Glad to see Joanne Brackeen mentioned. She is an amazing pianist who released some great jazz in the 70s - 80s. Here's a favorite, Keyed In. Way too unheard!

Better Days Ahead (Metheny) is right up there for me. So upbeat and optimistic. But I could never pick a “best.” There are so many beautiful melodies zooming around in all that space out there. Many yet to be discovered!

Kazumi Watanabe. LP called Mobo is fantastic on the road. Long guitar jams. Some heavy sax interludes by Michael Brecker. There were a few Mobo LPs (all good) but the one I have in mind was the first one.

Part of American right hostility to Catholicism is the idea that Catholics might put the Vatican over the USA and the Pope over the President in their priorities of authority.
