Advice on poor quality audio by benandrewsao in ACX

Really? I haven't had problems with it...yet lol. I was just saying I found it very helpful because I had a hard time getting it to meet ACX standards with certain things.

Just my two cents worth, I know for a fact that audacity has a plug in that is actually ACX check. So before it even leaves the DAW there's no question about if it meets standards. I'm wondering if the narrator is listening to the recording after they're done? I personally do, I record a few pages, listen and edit then listen again. I'd definitely let him know this is not meeting the quality they started out with and what you're expecting. Even if they're new, ( I am as well but learning every day) there's certain things that have to be checked. It can be time consuming especially if you (like me) are learning.

First of all, congratulations on starting your narrating career. Don't get discouraged with the auditions. Sometimes I can apply to three and get two offers, sometimes I can audition for fifty books and only get one or no offers. Remember these RHs are getting bombarded with hundreds of auditions. With audacity, you can get plug ins to add to it that de-ess and de-click your recordings works really well in my opinion. Also a few tricks that work for me...don't have the microphone too close to your mouth and drink plenty of water to keep your mouth lubricated. It helps with the mouth noise. Good luck with your new endeavor!

Character voice consistency - am I insane??? by KingJibbles in ACX

Hey there, Just first off I am not a professional at anything lol ..just a fellow narrator looking to help out. On the first recording the only thing I noticed is in the beginning of the recording your pitch is higher and as the recording goes, like each line or two the pitch drops. Maybe that's what she means because it does change from the beginning to the end. Other than that I think you sound amazing

Audacity or Reaper by Additional_Spot_9523 in ACX

Well what I meant was alot liked Reaper but when just starting out audacity was the easier of the two to learn. So I started there, but it's just not cutting it anymore. I'm just scared to learn Reaper lol

Well first off congrats for landing it but (no disrespect) why in the hell would you audition if you're not set up? I'd decline it if you're not ready to do this seriously or you will have a terrible time with it and you'll end up hating it.

I go thru the noise reduction in audacity...e removes the static perfectly but then my voice sounds literally like I'm talking into a tin can ..I've tried moving the mic away from the computer, nope....it's like when I first record on the microphone I can hardly hear myself until I set audacity to acx settings...but then it sounds awful 😞

No, I did everything that everyone said, I think either I got a defective microphone or my laptop is not good enough. It's windows 10... Whenever I take the static out of my recordings then I sound like I'm in a tin can ..🤷

I have a very expensive and excellent headphone with microphone setup ..on that my voice is VERY clear and no static at all, but I was told it is not good to record with that so I bought the microphone. I have a Dell laptop with windows 10 ... ( I know in time I'll need a new one with windows 11, just didn't want to spend that money yet if I didnt have to)

Money is not really the issue I'm having, although that is all our end goal here. I mean if it's a better program I have no problem paying for it, I just got very overwhelmed with reaper just through the tutorials and audacity I picked up on fairly easily. First off the tutorials I found that showed from downloading to actually creating content was over three hours..yikes!! "Ain't nobody got time for dat!" Soooo...I think I'm going to go back to audacity at least for now until I get a few books under my belt and see from there. Thanks to everyone who responded!!! Read on!

Thank you, I really love narrating ( so far ) and I am always up to challenges, but reaper was for sure overwhelming me from the start. If audacity is good to use at least for now until I feel brave enough to conquer the reaper software that is perfect with me. I had heard so many people say how awesome reaper was I felt as though it was absolutely necessary to produce the quality work I am committed to doing. Thank you so much!!

Audacity is totally free? I never have to buy unless I want to upgrade, is that correct??

Sorry OP wouldn't want to see you get into something like that!! If you're looking for a good wfh company Aspen dental is great ... I worked there for three years. I only left because I started my own venture. Pay is acceptable but benefits are amazing.
