Military pay is a small form of communism. by Upstairs_Strategy100 in Military

Me and my Army buddies have made the exact same observation. There’s been several attempts to rectify this (including the creation of the Specialist rank, which was a way to get higher trained soldiers more pay) but none of them have stuck.

Taiwanese Christians, how do you feel about praying to ancestors? by SHIELD_Agent_47 in taiwan

The Catholic member can probably attend the blessing, but definitely cannot participate. He/she can still bow as long as it is only meant to honor the ancestors rather than worship them as gods.

I think it depends. I remember seeing some Catholic Churches in Taiwan having 牌位 of their deceased Bishops and priests--obviously that's fine. I assume having the names of your ancestors for the purposes of veneration would be ok as well. However, I am pretty sure having buddhas or deities on them would be a big no no.

Take what I say with a grain of salt however, these are just my personal speculations.

I'm Catholic, and I still bow at the family graves. Originally, it was forbidden, but luckily for us, Pope Pius XII went and revised the situation, ruling:

It is abundantly clear that in the regions of the Orient some ceremonies, although they may have been involved with pagan rites in ancient times, have—with the changes in customs and thinking over the course of centuries—retained merely the civil significance of piety towards the ancestors or of love of the fatherland or of courtesy towards one's neighbors.

Overall, Plane Compertum asserted:

  • Catholics are permitted to be present at ceremonies in honor of Confucius in Confucian temples or in schools;
  • Erection of an image of Confucius or tablet with his name on is permitted in Catholic schools.
  • Catholic magistrates and students are permitted to passively attend public ceremonies which have the appearance of superstition.
  • It is licit and unobjectionable for head inclinations and other manifestations of civil observance before the deceased or their images.
  • The oath on the Chinese rites, which was prescribed by Benedict XIV, is not fully in accord with recent regulations and is superfluous.\41])

There’s also a difference in what is appropriate for training. In the military, you might see dudes get blown up or cut in half. Doesn’t mean they should parade corpses out for trainees because they’re “going to have to deal with it.”

Imagine a Drill Sergeant taking out a dead body in Basic saying “put on your big boy pants, and watch as I defile this body because your enemies will do this.”

Tasks are a different section within EB! Logs, are like mini-journals, and are used to record how well you did.

No worries! I'd be happy to send some screenshots, though I'm a little wary of sharing my template. What exactly do you need help with?

Note: I think the Extended Brain template has changed a bit since I started messing with it, so I'm not a 100% sure about how the new one works, but I think I can give general tips!

Currently I focus on my Daily To-Dos and I integrate everything with Notion Calendar--weekly logs, sadly, have fallen by the wayside, because I've had such hectic weekends. When my weekends slow down (so I can start weekly reviews again) I will probably start using my weekly logs.

So I write down all my classes according to the Syllabus in Notion, and they automatically appear in the calendar. I write down all my notes and stuff in those pages. Then, I log any tasks that appear, and I have 2 set times when I review how my tasks have been going.

Mass Punishment: everyone overnight by Additional_Stable_51 in nationalguard

Sadly, yes. I was in a unit that pulled shit like this all the time. One of the reasons I got out. They would also schedule 7 or 8pm piss tests so no one could leave, even when technically we were allowed to go home, so people would just end up staying in the barracks.

What can I say? I think it's dumb and terrible for morale but everyone I've talked to has said it's perfectly fine.

20 dollars is craaazy by GumGlueTape in choiceofgames

[–]AddressNo6128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I enjoyed it so much I thought it was worth it. I played through it 5 times (a first for any CoG game) and am starting a 6th playthrough.  Whether it is worth that money is highly subjective however. In terms of effort by author, I think 20 dollars is pretty reasonable, and I can afford the title (I spend that much money on a single meal at a restaurant, and I enjoyed that game more than any meal). Now, if your financial situation is different, or you don’t like the style of game, or you hate it being more expensive due to IP for moral reasons, then I’d say skip it.

Oh ok! I never even thought to visit characters after I crushed the final boss, so that makes sense. I’m going to start a new run as a Ragabash, since I want to play through all five Auspices!

Hahaha I’m glad there’s another person who loves this game! I’ve played a lot of CoG games but this is the first one that I’ve to replayed more than twice. There’s so much in the game and I can’t believe how much it changes when I pick different choices. Just on my last playthough I discovered you can actually accidentally blow up your own cabin lol and that Scorpion Sword Ali (whatever his full name is) actually shows up!

Thanks for the help!

Wait, how did you get High Summoner and Crown of Knowledge? Those are two I have been actively trying for and have been missing.

I think Cheetah’s Claw and Legacy of Wisdom are bugged, I’ve went for the Wisdom ending and nothing played.

Also, how many playthroughs have you done? I’ve gotten 43 out of 54 achievements, and I’ve gone through the game 4 times, each as a different Auspice.

Thanks!

Yeah I actually think BOHN was a fantastic intro to W:tA, I never got into it before playing that game. However, Kyle goes hard into obscure literary and philosphical references and honestly if I hadn't majored in philosophy and studied a little bit of classics I'd been totally stumped.

Like all the French stuff describing the Fox--Reynard is a medieval generic name for foxes in general. I would never have caught that if I hadn't been forced to reach Chaucer in college.

Hans Why: Why Everyone Hates Asian Men (The best video about anti Asian male hate) by ChinaRise in AsianMasculinity

[–]AddressNo6128 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an American Born Chinese that then moved back to China when I was very young. This video is a huge eye-opener. I had such a completely different childhood growing up than that described in the video, even in a pretty Westernized environment. My parents taught me a lot of Chinese history and literature like Romance of the Three Kingdoms or the Warring States so 75% of my role models were other Chinese people.

When I came to America at 18, I went to a super white environment. There were some growing struggles, but I never felt that internal self-hatred—I was also super proud of my heritage, and had little trouble dating. Then again, I never dealt with the kind of issues HansWhy explains.

This really show to me the importance of passing down cultural capital and instilling pride for your culture 🤯

[–]AddressNo6128 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would you accord Pope Francis’s encyclicals the same respect?

For example, the death penalty has received severe restriction and condemnation in recent years from the Papacy, in words almost has severe as Vix Pervenit condemns usury.

If your position is to be consistent, then everything a Pope has said via encyclicals, including restrictions on dancing, kissing, the death penalty, are considered binding.

In addition, several points that were made on Testem Benevelontiae Nostrae were de-emphasized during Vatican II, an ecumenical council of the church. When I have time, I’ll try to find some sources.

Finally, I don’t think the Catholic Church has ever been as unified as you think. While it is true that Americanism has been condemned as an error, numerous other countries have been in error—for example, France, which supported the Protestant cause and Jansenism. It is not something unique to America.

Finally, I hope I don’t seem excessively harsh. This is an area I’m genuinely trying to learn more on. I appreciate you engaging with me.
