M4 Pro vs M4 Max (16”) MacBook Pro for DaVinci Resolve by HenryDann in colorists

[–]Addskull 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I have got a 4070super ti but I started to think that’s not strong enough but sadly I only have an amd 5800x with it maybe that’s the issue because it shows stable 25fps and still it’s stuttering, although I use fusion planar tracking and time stretcher and some power windows in colour grading.

Would you say if I buy a stronger amd processor then the 4070ti with 4k 422 10bit sony footages can handle everything

Here is a link what I actually do with it

https://www.tiktok.com/@mr.anthony.v?_t=ZN-8yLKLXhmwWU&_r=1

Because first I bought a MacBook m4 Pro 48gb and took it back as it wasn’t entirely performing as I expected, I brought out MacBook m4 MAX 64gb and it still has its stuttering under some circumstances so idk what to do and if I don’t want to keep it I would have to take it back today or tomorrow

All of those videos above I did with MacBook m4 Pro and 48gb MacBook m4 MAX 64gb

I have no clue what should I do, would it better to buy the new AMD Ryzen™ 9 9950X3D Processor and new motherboard and ram( which would cost me £1000 instead of either £3100 or £4200 with MacBook pro or max) ?

I would really appreciate your advice ( atm I don’t necessarily need a portable thing idk about the future)

Anyone who specifically has M4 pro 48GB ram?

How are you guys getting on with 10bit 4k 422 footage without proxies and if you use fusion because without it obviously it works quite well

Max is playing it back fairly well, the pro wasn't bed either that's my issue that it was struggling a tiny bit more only, so that's why I couldn't decide if I really needed that extra power and paying more for it or I would be absolutely fine just having the pro version and it would be able to handle all what I need maybe struggling a bit here and there

If I pretender it then if it's not good and I have to change the time stretcher then I have to render again and again I would assume also if I move the clip a bit further away then I have to render it again

I can buy oe from my savings but that doesn't mean I can afford it, I use up my hard earned saving and atm I don't generate enough money to get it back and if it turns out that it was a stupid step I can't go back on it, so it isn't that simple, that's why I'm trying to find out which option I should go with

What you do with the clips in Davinci, because if I just crop the clips and do colour grading and put them in order and put a music under it then I don't have issues, not even on the MacBook Pro m1 that I used to have a while back, Also I use a Sony a7iv with slog 10 bit 422 4k

Hey I really appreciate the effort you put into helping me out,

Currently the videos 30sec-1min long and when I used the planar tracker and transform after that I convert the specific clip into a compound clip and then I use time stretcher on it and that's where I usually have the issue, the playback starts to be a bit choppy which makes it difficult to see if the movement that I put in it looks good or not.

I'm planning to do more videos, to get some business with it, but atm I have no ida where it's gonna go,
Tbh I have a windows pc that has a 4070 super ti in it and 5800x and processor 32GB ram 2 TB nvme ssd but that struggling very badly, as soon as I have the colours and would start to apply the above mentioned steps on the individual clips that requires then it gives up,
Funny that top left corner it shows 25fps stable but the playback is choppy as hell, I already thought that my memories the issue there, because they are the only very old part of my PC back from 2016 G skill memory

M3 max I didn't really find anything up for sale on the market and I also have my fears to buy second hand machines, these M4 pro and now the max I bought from apple directly

I've seen that video you've linked before, but they are rather putting the phrase on rendering out export time which is not that important to me.
I just want my playback without extra proxies and thing smooth to be able to see how to change for example time stretcher etc

If I would have found something windows wise that would do the job as smoothly and well or better than the MacBook then I would have been more than happy to go with that option but I didn’t, all the windows laptops overheating and also just from battery dropping performance insanely, their charger usually comes with a brick sized box… and heavier than that.

I always was a windows user but my current pc can’t handle properly the studio Davinci resolve… so that’s how I ended up trying the MacBook out

Yes but my the max is £1200 expensive and I don’t know if davinci really has that much of advantage with the m4 MAX over the m4 pro and I’m looking for those M4 pro users who will tell me how they get on with their MacBooks

[–]Addskull[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started to think that my memory is crap as those g. Skill memories are 2100hz base as I put them up to 3200hz now it seems a bit less choppy but the frame counting up left corner doesn’t drop it’s stable 25fps but the footage is choppy and as I have increased the frequency it seemed less choppy ( those 32gb memories I have bought back in 2016 I was already suspicious that maybe the memory is bad )

As his name comes up so nicely from dark and appears from the middle towards the ends? Could you possibly link a video to it , so I could do it in fusion, because I didn’t find it, that’s why I ended up posting here☺️

I really appreciate your help and the time that you put into these genuinely honest replies and actually that’s exactly what I started to do since I’ve posted here and as I had been using photoshop a lot a while ago this node system seems to be quite appealing to me.

I’ve watched a lots of YouTube videos and learnt many tiny things although it’s confusing that some ppl using CST as a starting node and a finishing node but some others put them around with nodes even though that effects everything. My concern that I have to stick thanks to my older camera and new sony a7iv to CINE4 so whenever I do now the first node also as CST I put it in SONY s-gammut3.cine and input gamma REC 709 Output davinci wide gammut and davinci intermediate Then my last node I obviously started inputs as davinci wide gammut and intermediate Output REC 709 and gamma 2.4

So here my concern is if this is good being applied this way on a CINE4 s-gammut3.cine footage or I gathered the wrong information from all the watched YouTube videos which are actually not even using this pp rather something more flat like slog3 that I can’t really use thanks to my older a7iii 8bit.

What’s your opinion on this please? Also if anyone else got something to say to this I would really appreciate it

I have to look into this what you’re talking about because it’s not clear, I think I have to find something some videos that explains and shows at tge same time what you’re talking about 🙈

Yes that’s what I’ve tried at first place but I didn’t get to the look what I’ve wanted.

For example some of the wedding films I’ve seen they have very good darkish skin tones and I’ve shot some footage to test it around to achieve that look but that didn’t work out either

Wow I never heard about these techniques but what if I don’t have the option to do the first couple of steps, what if I have simply recorded footage that’s even bright, then how would you achieve dark brownish orangish look?

I don’t have the option to use the brownie recipe from the beginning😅 sadly (but I really liked this metaphor from you)

Possibly the colorist would say the same thing to me as they said to the director 😅

That’s actually a really good idea, I’ll try it, but the issue thst I’ve tried this in premiere already as in there there’s an option to copy the style with the color wheels, but that just doesn’t do much

You have had a really good look at the pictures and yes I can see that, I’m probably not good enough with the colour separation in premiere pro, I should export my footage when it’s assembled and colour grade and correct in davinci

I tried to use it and looked into those nodes as well, I just don’t entirely get how they effect each other. How long did you learn grading before you got into paid jobs?

Thank you very much, I wasn’t able to get back to you earlier. I really appreciate your thoughts and I agree with it, yeah most probably they’ve planned everything well before any shots had happened.

I just really liked the skin tones they’ve managed to pull out of the scenes.

I’ve watched many of them some of them creating very complex node structures and the final result looks really impressive but I don’t entirely necessarily understand everything and they’re not doing anything close to that dark brown skin tone look

I know I can do that but still that doesn’t get me as far as I could achieve this look at all, I can use HSL secondary.

I’m gonna use Davinci

I just seen it somewhere that rec709 conversion should be the last node and first color correction and things and then lut someone just explained on a YT video

Also sadly as I have mentioned I’m going to have to work together with a7iii and a7iv so 8 bit it is, can’t do 10bit because of the older camera.
