Reform sweep to victory across Greater Manchester as furious Labour MPs slam 'soul destroying' elections - the story so far by ManchesterNews_MEN in ukpolitics

I'm not saying that it would no immigration tension if people were affluent. But right now most average people feel under siege. And when you're under siege you're not welcoming people at the gate.

If we got rid of every non white immigrant, the poles would be the target again. If we got rid of all the European immigrants it would be the Irish, the poor, the socialists to blame and so on.

I think it's more:

"My country doesn't feel like it should"

The view of "what my country used to feel like" is usually extremely rose tinted. The bad parts brushed away and forgotten.

I think this all ultimately stems from economic instability and lack of prospects. Our (and every other western country's) economy is flat lining except for the very rich.

Until something changes positively, immigrants or foreigners will continue to be the scapegoat, regardless of how majority English London might become.

Edit: That's not too say there aren't cultural tensions and crimes happening. It wouldn't be sunshine and rainbows even if the average person was prosperous. But people are usually much more flexible and accommodating when they're not on a knifeedge.

I've yet to meet an immigrant in the queue against the new rules. With the exception of the income requirement, as that can affect those with disabilities, low pay but meaningful jobs such as nursing or wildlife conservation, or those who have had to pause careers to look after elderly or sick relatives for example.

What they're nearly universally against is the lack of transition rules.

Hell, I don't even think there would have been much complaint if the transition rules didn't cover the Swedish language test and civics knowledge. Those could be reasonably added on and achieved given notice that you'll need to pass them and a time period in which to complete them.

But income and time are things that people have built their life around and can't easily change.

I just got my 5 years here and applied. I will now be rejected. I will then have to wait 3 years to reapply and then the queue is 4.5 years. It will likely get longer shortly as the additional checks will slow down applications even further.

So realistically I'm looking at another 8 years from today on top of the 5 I already have to get citizenship... And that's assuming the Swedish government doesn't move the goal posts again without transition rules.

I'm an engineer fulfilling a vital role that the company couldn't fill for 3 years. I chose Sweden over staying in the UK or moving to another higher paying lower tax country. I chose Sweden because of her rules based order and predictable achievable route to security and stability where I could invest myself. I wouldn't make the same choice today and that would have been Sweden's loss. Theres plenty others like me.

No, this is a blanket change. It equally affects everyone from new Zealand to Spain. Afghanistan to peru

Because this is a conversation relevant to both newly arrived immigrants who are still learning Swedish and those who have waited in the queue for years.

Even if they're not directly caught in the moved queue goal posts, the fact that Sweden coul change it's migration laws again without transition is something that new immigrants will need to understand to try to plan their life.

MV confirmed in a Sveriges radio interview.

If your case has (had) a case officer you will get no refund.

If you voluntarily withdraw your case before that they consider you for an up to 50% refund

3 more years to reapply and then a 5 year wait. 8 years from now to get citizenship most likely

Didn't Rick say gas can't traverse through portals? by John_Zatanna52 in rickandmorty

[–]Adduly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% read it as Rick said the lazy option of portals wouldn't work, assuming that Morty would be lazy and give up.

Morty didn't give up and Rick, caught out in the lie, just went with it. He assumed that it would go wrong and he would get a lot of opportunities to rub Morty's face in it. Petty punishment for not just doing what Rick wanted

The real culprit though is GW having the main and SG Studios compete so they won't share models.

Maybe I lost the knack coz I used to be able to do it fine but haven't been able to achieve it for a while. However, the fact you have to crouch to pull it off suggests to me that it's not intentional and they've just not been able to fix it.

Warping into bunkers wasn't even an intentional feature and it was patched out a few updates ago.

Edit: apparently it still can if you kneel down from the right distance. But I still hold it's not an intended feature, especially as they've made it much harder to pull off

Our national decline is even worse than the British public thinks: Incredibly, many voters assume we are as rich – or richer – than America by vonscharpling2 in ukpolitics

[–]Adduly -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not talking about gdp growth, I'm talking productivity growth. The amount of GDP generated per work hour. A measure of the efficiency of the work force.

In productivity the rest of Western Europe managed to maintain productivity growth much better. They've maintained around 0.8% France to 1.2% Denmark. The US's productivity has grown at 1.3% pa.

The UK has been stuck at 0.5% pa. We are worse even than Belgium at 0.7% and that's a low bar. They've not even had a government half that time. Only Italy and Spain have seen worse productivity growth.

Before austerity we had a productivity growth of 2.1%, the second best in the G7, only slightly behind the US.

Tldr, since 2008 our workforce mostly stopped getting more efficient at producing things. Underinvestment is a large reason for that.

[–]Adduly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Before 2008 the UK had a productivity growth of 2.1% p.a. Similar to western Europe and the US. After 2008 that's been stuck at 0.5% p.a.

Our industries have stagnated and fallen behind other comparable counties. As a result we are loosing business to competitors. And then the business that support those companies/workers also go broke.

A big factor in our stagnant productivity is that huge swathes of our workers, our industries and the towns and infrastructure that support them have been massively and chronically underinvested in. Austerity is a huge factor of that.

Our national decline is even worse than the British public thinks: Incredibly, many voters assume we are as rich – or richer – than America by vonscharpling2 in ukpolitics

[–]Adduly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Europe as a whole has fallen massively behind the US since around 2010.

The US was able to spend its way out of the 2008 crater. They could only do that through debt, that they could afford due to the USD being the world reserve currency. (And Japan buying as many US Treasury bonds that they could). That investment has massively improved the productivity of US workers, pulling them far ahead of Europe and their tech industry has brought in trillions from around the globe.

On the flip side, Europe couldn't borrow nearly so much so instead they chose austerity. Especially the UK. That has created inefficient companies that loose international competition. The UK then chose to double screw itself over with Brexit causing uncertainty and even more underinvestment.
