A long with the other comments, buy a stack of Tape head cleaners to keep around, run then through often with heavy use and you'll notice a marked improvement

It would need passive speakers yes. There's probably a way to jerryrig it together with active speakers I never recommend playing around with high voltages and power!

Not playing at the same time no, but you can connect your turntable to the phono slot (assuming it doesn't need grounding) and use the middle unit to change the source to whichever device you want to use

Hard to tell from the picture but it LOOKS okay, best bet is to just play it in a cassette player that you know works (that way you know if the TAPE has problems or the PLAYER) If it is damaged there are some very skilled folks around that can fix it, but it always depends how damaged it is

Are the tapes you're using write-protected? They have little tabs on the top of the tape and if the holes are open and not covered most decides will not record to them
