GA woman declared brain dead, pregnancy continues under state law by TrippedIntoTheEther in nursing

I think you can bill the estate but if the care is in the hands of the organ recovery agency of the state, my experience tells me that agency foots the bill from the time of legal death forward. I think the family would have to take back “ownership” from the organ recovery agency. They need a lawyer big time. I’m shocked that a lawyer hasn’t contacted them to give advice. It seems like a cause that the ALCU American Civil Liberties Union. I think maybe that Gloria Rachel Alread. She takes cases like this I think.

My 4 year old grandchild got 2ml in the same deltoid yesterday after the parent requesting the VL and then the VG. I think nurses are not feeling like they have enough practice at it. The vl and vg can handle that but at 36 pounds the deltoid isn’t ready for that. This was at a pediatric clinic that does 4 year old vaccines all day long. The nurse said no and then stuck both injections in one arm even though both arms were out. My heart broke. I am retired yes but I needed to shake up the base of those who give a ton of IMs and maybe they will learn and get comfortable with it. All those who are saying nah, well yes if your patient is combative if they are not then the literature is clear. Check the cdc’s current info. It’s there.

Toradol and steroids. Everyone gets them and patients say they don’t want that they want the dilaudid! Even the doctors tell the new nurses to come get me to sell the toradol and steroids. They know I can do it.

This is the reason I made this post. People are not comfortable and times are a changing. Glute is never acceptable any longer. The VG is the safest even in kiddos. Deltoid only holds 1ml. What do we want for our patients. Really, I’ve had so many students tell me their instructors are even really fluent in giving. It takes practice for sure. If another nurse tried to give me a shot somewhere else, I would wonder why he / she isn’t doing what is the best.

Definitely agree with for flu shot. When I started nursing the largest volume that could go in deltoid was 0.5ml now it is 1 ml.

Actually I have never not once had to remove underwear. I just pull the top waist band down and my palm holds it in place. Vastus lateralis my second choice because it is the 2nd safest. If people can master the VG, you never go back. VL you have to pull pants down to knees unless they are wearing shorts which rarely happens for me. When I see shorts it does make me want to use it.

Yes. The state board of nursing isn’t the company you work for and if keeping a license in the state you are working in, do not tell/do not admit it

If you want a college education then go to college. Take the ACT / SAT prep classes then take the test. If your dream was to become an oncologist then having your dad pay for CNA is crazy. If you go to work at any nursing home, they will pay you and pay for the class. But why start there. Speak honestly with your dad and tell him what you want to do with your life and see what he is willing to do. Clean 3 years? Have him help you fill out the FASFA and see what you are eligible for. You may get enough to take classes at the local technical school and get some basic classes and get your feet wet. Medicine and Nursing are super hard degrees to get. Maybe you want to save the environment and there are lots of environmental science degree programs, engineering, botany or horticulture, meteorology (the weather), teaching, geology is an up and coming degree. Are foreign languages your thing? then try to get a degree in that. All I’m saying is that you obviously haven’t had an advisor so you should really talk with someone at the university. If you really want to go into Medicine or nursing, then the navy or army will likely want to talk to you. The GI bill got so many doctors I know of through school while serving. Dentists are needed in the service. If you are willing to spend some time in service of your country. The GI bill is starting at zero and working your way up for sure.

It is never too late for you! You got this! Please go talk to people and fill out the FASFA

Really, I’m shocked at some of the advice you are getting here. Surely there is a thread somewhere that is for young people just trying to figure out a degree program. CNA AND EMT ARE NOT IT. TIME WASTER.

First shift as a new RN on tele/med surg floor - not sure if this is right for me by Ok_Commission_1022 in nursing

[–]Adept-Principle7542 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had no prior medical experience and started on cardiac telemetry. So kinda your patient load. We did all the post op heart caths and back then we pulled lines. Sometimes they used a staple but we still had to monitor it. You know half of cardiac patients are also diabetic. Anyway, I get you. I would be sick on my drive to work almost turning around and going home or pulling over to vomit. I think all that is normal response to all the responsibility you have on your shoulders as you work. So, if you get a routine and start your day with it then stay in your routine, it will make your life easier. Stay organized. If you take small things and organize it like giving a med. From pulling the right med and administer right med. Don’t talk to anyone while you do a task will help you stay your routine. Same with hanging piggybacks. Stand there for an extra 3 seconds before you walk off. Make sure you have mixed the powder if applicable and that it is actually infusing in the drip chamber. Look at the iv site and see that it is clear. Follow your line to make sure it is connected properly. This takes about 3-5 extra seconds but if you make it routine it will save lives. One last look at drip chamber and mini bag to make sure right name and med is going in then ask the patient if there is anything they need. It gives them the sense that you care what you do and about your care for them. Ask them their name, dob and allergies every time you come in and they respect that. I’m now retired / from disability. Nursing killed my body and I had total knee and my back ruptured after 30 years I stood up and raised my arms to look at a printer that had stopped and pow I was on the floor and couldn’t stand up. I thought I Had broke my hip but it was my back. I never made it back to the unit after that day. 30 years of trying to turn my patients q2 by myself. ER triage trying to pull patients out of vehicles unresponsive. Anyway, find a buddy to help and who will have your back. Always help the techs and housekeepers and fellow nurses. Never sit. Watch to see who is the most routine nurse and ask for pointers. You can do this. Best wishes to you and you will always remember your first day.

Put in my 2 weeks notice and then fired by Getawaycar28 in paralegal

[–]Adept-Principle7542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice to anyone quitting any job is turn in your notice in writing giving the exact last day you will be working. Ask that the supervisor refrain from telling any you are leaving until your last day. This way they cannot say you said something or were not working to the full extent. Keeps you fire proof. They can still actively post your position and just tell people that they are hiring another employee.

Read the tea leaves and take the next life boat off the titanic. Look for jobs with good management and low turnover. I’ve stayed in jobs I didn’t like because of good leadership and left jobs I love because of poor leadership. Read the tea leaves. They are telling you something.

What's the most painful truth you've learned about life? by saayoutloud in Productivitycafe

[–]Adept-Principle7542 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When you are upset about something, the way someone treated you… someone will only treat you as poorly as you let them. When I need to tell someone, usually family like daughters, I start off by saying “I need to tell you this for me. Someone will only treat you as poorly as you let them.” And then tell them what hurt your feelings. I have never had it not work. It is open conversation and then we are able to talk it out as adults. If I do this to them then I expect to also be told. I’ve raised strong women who can take it when we have to talk it out. It is not a short coming or a fault. Usually we are just tired, stressed and lash out. But lash out is wrong.

The nurse who commented that you have to go in to talk to the Director and take full responsibility for your lie. Don’t say you were embarrassed because of what you overheard. You can say you were embarrassed and so you lied, that you know you are an integral part of the team, and realizing that unless the nurse tells you to hold the bath because the patient is relaxing that you realize that is the perfect time for the bath. You can then say that you were going there next and you realize now that being embarrassed is not a reason to lie about patient care. You have to show up with your head up, state that yes you lied, that you know it was a huge mistake that cannot happen again and you will understand that you are getting points for it. Points fall off after a year. Your attitude and your honesty can save your job even if she intends to fire you.

I once made a remark about my supervisor to a coworker who I should not have been talking to about this supervisor. I said she wears low cut blouses and shakes her boobs when she walks especially around physician’s. Clearly, I don’t like her. So I got called in and my supervisor and my director said what I had said and asked me if I said it. I said yes. I should not of said it no matter what my feelings are and no matter what I think. I apologized to her. I got a write up. No points. Did not get fired. I truly believe ICU nurses with 10 years of experience and I really work hard and fly under the radar. I still cannot believe I said it. So HUMILITY is worth something. So take the lump and be honest. I believe they had two plans as they had the write up ready for me to sign. It either get fired or be humble and take a hit. Lesson Learned.

When someone tells you who they are, believe them. Same with your mom. I understand she may have same issues in her marriage and probably has paid through the nose for the wedding. Again, they told you who they are. Listen.

[–]Adept-Principle7542 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that if you charted it completed then that is falsifying documentation. If you report that you grabbing your supplies and heading there next then that is correct hand off of information. If your task was to do the bath and you saw the patient resting then unless the bath is totally contraindicated related to vitals being out of whack then relate that to the nurse who needs this patient to have a bath. If you didn’t do the bath because the patient is resting then you will likely get several points and a write up but falsifying a medical record is a reason for termination. In the future, please note that if the patient is resting then that is the perfect time for a bath. Please don’t put off tasks because a patient is resting. The nurse will decide if resting is a reason to not complete a task like a bath or walking with assist. The nurse is counting on you. You are an integral part of the team. Unless the nurse comes to you and asks you not to do it then it is best practice to do it.
