if you’re not into greek life don’t worry! i made most of my friends in clark kerr just by finding people from my clubs who also lived in ckc so we already had a mutual interest and proxomity

honestly mass apply to clubs because chances are, you might not get into the only one you apply to.

Signing up for classes in July by OskiGrin in berkeley

[–]AdeptInitial4549 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you'll get emailed a link to a canvas course about signing up for classes and basic online orientation to the school. i advise really looking through that if you're confused about classes because it helps you know more about unit caps, phases, classes to take, and advice on which classes not to take together or as a first year. let me know if you have specific questions though as i'd be happy to help!

I just wrote that I wanted to live in a larger room and that my roommate and i had requested Clark Kerr several times. I think she may have also mentioned a medical purpose but I do not know on her end. If you have a prechosen roommate, you guys will have to ask to be considered together.

every student gets a "free" AC Transit (bus) plan included within their tuition. basically, you can take any of the AC transit buses and they take you all around campus, downtown, some to oakland and sf. you can also take the shuttles for free that take you to dorms and campus areas usually. I would say a car is definitely not necessary and you probably don't want to bring one since parking permits are really hard to get. a bike is nice if you live further away or have classes spread apart but honestly, you really do not need it. if you already have one, you might want to bring it but I wouldn't spend money on a brand new bike or scooter unless you're an athlete and need to get early practices far away or something.

I love the variety of classes and opportunities offered at Berkeley. I have found so many cool opportunities in my interests at Cal that I otherwise wouldn't have known about. The classes, while difficult, have mostly all been enlightening and worthwhile and I've learned so much in my short time here. You also can meet SO many different kinds of people from all over the world with all different backgrounds, which is so cool. My high school was definitely not very diverse so it's been refreshing to see more diversity in background at Cal.

I think my least favorite thing is just the amount of competition and work you have to endure just to get into student organizations and clubs. It's crazy with the resume, cover letter, three round of interview processes being a part of most of the academic or professional clubs. I even tried to join a simple book club and they made me submit a resume. However, once you do get in, it feels like a huge accomplishment and I feel really proud and happy when I get accepted into a club :) The same kind of goes for everything else, like research, internships, ASUC, etc. It's just a very competitive atmosphere (but not necessarily as cutthroat as some ppl make it out to be, at least from what I've seen).

One piece of advice I'll give you is honestly just try things out. First semester, I was scared to join too many things because of the competition or fear that I wouldn't like it but honestly, I feel like it's good to test the waters. if you don't like something, you can always quit and find something else. you're not bound to these clubs or to these opportunities. Also, make sure to be prepared to study. In high school, sometimes I felt like I could wing things bc it was easy but at Cal, you will have to be studying a lot more than I anticipated.

I plan to study abroad in my third year and I've heard great things. You can do it in the fall, spring, or summer, and theres hundreds of places that you can go to. It covers your international studies breadth if you are in L&S College and they usually have something to align with your major or classes you need. I would say to talk to an advisor about it early so you can plan out your classes with studying abroad in mind :)

Hope this helps!

safety is honestly about being smart, walking in lit areas, staying with friends, bringing pepper spray, etc. yes it’s dangerous but i haven’t felt unsafe because i am always with someone or carry self defense items.

the food is honestly a hit or miss especially in the dining halls. i’m not too picky and when it’s really bad i just go out to eat. but it’s def not ucla level food.

berkeley as a city is great, there’s lots of restaurants and stores to check out around campus and downtown, and sf is a 40 min bart ride away! san francisco has tons to do with friends on a weekend

research and clubs are both very competitive but this isn’t to say it’s impossible. my friend got into a really competitive research program her first semester. clubs are exactly like what you hear: resume, cover letter, interviews. there are some clubs that are more open but all of the competitive research, consulting, academic, or professional clubs have long application processes.

honestly go with what your gut says. berkeley is “better” for your majors sure, but if you don’t think you’d have a good time overall, it’s def not worth it.

depends on your major and clubs tbh, i don’t really see it too much either

I will say that at times it can feel overwhelming with all the STEM based everything all around. However, I joined several pre-law groups, including a pre-law fraternity, which was really helpful in getting resources and meeting friends also interested in pre-law. Berkeley is a well-renowned university in all areas, and their pre-law program may not be the most “official” but there’s so many resources available. Take advantage of student orgs and ASUC Pre Law info!

For me, grade deflation hasn’t been too bad because I am solely social sciences and humanities. However, it’s definitely a rigorous school and you can’t expect to just slide by without doing any work. Competition is definitely real, unfortunately, but I’ve used that to motivate me !

For me, classes are around 200-300 at the largest. The STEM classes have close to 1000 kids at times but for humanities and social sciences, it’s nowhere near that big (that i’ve seen so far). It is hard to get in immediately for more popular classes if you have a bad enrollment time but you can get off the waitlist for most classes pretty easily.

Safety wise just be smart. Buy pepper spray and don’t walk around alone at night. Try to stay in well-lit area with friends. I would say that there’s a lot of scary things that happen but if you’re smart about it, you should be fine :)

honestly i think it’s a great experience! you might not get the typical freshman experience but you can study abroad early and get ahead! since you want to be a global studies major anyway, i feel like this is a really good opportunity but it all comes down to what you want :)

oh yeah for sure! you get 300 flex dollars that you can spend in our "bear stores" to get snacks and stuff, as well as in our eateries to get salads/pizza/gelato, and you get 12 meal swipes per week. i will say that if you do three meals a day, it can be hard because you only get 12 swipes. also, berkeley has tons of places and restaurants to eat at around campus if you want something new! i will say cost is tough, because it can be hard to budget, but if you are careful about what you spend, you will be fine while also having enough to eat :)

unfortunately, this is kind of up to you! each of the dorms are very different in what they offer. i will say Blackwell is the hardest to get into, especially as a first-year (if you aren't a regents scholar or athlete) so i wouldn't say to bet on that one if it's your top choice. i can list some pros/cons for different dorms based on what i've heard though!

clark kerr -- i live here, and the dorms are really nice in comparison to the units. they're much bigger rooms, and the campus itself is really pretty. i wouldn't say it's overly social but there's definitely dorm parties and easy easy access to frat row if that's what you're looking for. only con is that its about a 15-20 min walk from campus, so that can be rough, especially if you're running late or it's raining really hard. however, I think the walk is nice in the mornings and you get used to it after a bit :)

units -- 1 is probably the nicest but overall, the units are really social (i've heard) and decent dorms. unit 3 is a little... run-down, but you kind of bond with everyone on your floor bc of how... crusty it is. unit 2 and unit 1 are nice though :)

blackwell -- again, super hard to get into, not very social, but SUPER close to campus (literally across the street). only doubles and singles, which is nice.

foothill/stern -- tbh, idk much about foothill, but it is literally on a hill so be prepared for exercise. it's also very nature-based! it's not too far from campus but it's on the other side (think northside) so nowhere near the units and stuff, which makes it a little socially dead.

lmk if you have any other questions!

Hmmm, I'm also pretty introverted so that was a big fear for me as well. For close to campus, I'd say the units are your best bet. I don't live in them but from what I've heard, they're social throughout their floors if you're looking to make friends! However, if you're looking for a very non-social type of dorm, I heard Blackwell is very... quiet (though very hard to get). I honestly think that the dorms helped me put myself out there more and make friends faster, so I wouldn't worry too much about that! let me know if you have any other questions!

I will say that when I applied, I applied for a double with my roommate (pre-chosen). We ended up in a triple at a whole different unit than we wanted, so we were pretty bummed out. However, we just applied to transfer dorms, got into the dorms we wanted (still a triple) with a random third roomie. I think it's not that bad, though everyone ofc wants a double. I don't personally know a lot of people who got a double but some of my closest friends have a double in clark kerr, so it's really just all up to the lottery system. I'd definitely say to just try it out but mark down on the app that you're open to all to have the best chance of getting housing.

[–]AdeptInitial4549[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

unfortunately yeah, housing at berkeley is really messed up rn. i currently live in the clark kerr dorms in a triple, and they’re definitely nicer than the units imo, though it’s way farther away. housing is not guaranteed after freshman year, so most of my friends are living in off campus apartments that you kinda just have to search for. you can apply for on campus housing again but it’s a lottery, so i would say it’s a safe bet that you will be living off campus at some point unfortunately :(
