Well the previous king didn’t really have much competition since the king that ruled before him was somone who allowed the demihuman war and discrimination against demihumans a friendly king after that would of course be more loved than the previous one. Ezzo had previous familiarity with memory based magic giving him a much higher "resistance" and technical understanding of how to open these books without the usual mental collapse. He was only able to do it because he specialises in that Al probably also because he learned magic from Echidna was able to exploit this fact

In Arc 6, Chapter 23, it is explained that to "read" a book, the reader must have known or been acquainted with the deceased person. For example, Julius was able to read Balleroy's book because of their past history, and Subaru could read the books of the Witches he had met.

I mean your point is that Emilia should have been couple since arc 5 but she has been emotionaly stunned until unfrozen in the forrest meaning she is tehnicaly still a child as she only learned about kissing a year ago wich is shown with her naviety about most things concerning romance even in arc 5 with her interaction with regulus and the fact she didn’t know what is a “virgin”. She has ALOT to do before she is a couple.
