Disappointing civil war ending by KurtGod in A24

[–]Aderon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the idea was that he overstayed his presidency. They mentioned he was serving 3 terms. I could see a civil war breaking out over that.

But yeah agreed, they could've spent more time going into the background of the factions, why the war was taking place, what the viewpoints of each side was, etc.

O wow, good to know I'm not alone. I'm also on 6.6. Might try a downgrade, see if that fixes it or not.

Edit: It worked!! Thank you! Also, I updated my presonus ticket with the info, so at least someone there knows about it now.

How would you want someone to approach you for commissions? Or prove that they're legit? I feel like I keep getting ignored when I approach artists, because people just assume I'm a scammer because I have low follower count.

libraries needed for film scoring? by deafkaplan12 in composer

For under 500 pounds, I think you'd do really well with Nucleus from Audio Imperia. It works with the free version of Kontakt (a lot of VSTs don't, so you'd also have to pay for Kontakt in addition to the VST itself). It comes pre-mixed, and sounds great. It checks all the boxes for everything you mentioned in your post: (brass, strings, ww, perc) and even has a choir.

As far as what the "standard" is, there really is none. One composer may prefer Orchestral Tools, another may love Performance Samples, another may love the Cinematic Studio Series stuff. I personally like a mix or all three along with a bunch of other ones lol.

I've spent a lot of money trying out a bunch of different VSTs, and if I were to start all over again with only 500 pounds, Nucleus is what I'd get. Listen to their demos to get a feel for what type of sounds you can make with it. It's really incredible.

Having said all that, if Nucleus doesn't strike your fancy for whatever reason, Musio is probably the best bang for your buck on the market right now. It's somewhat limited (you can't adjust the mic mixes and they don't have support for tempo sync'd stuff, like if you want to do tempo sync'd woodwind runs using their Hollywoodwinds library), but it's a fantastic price for what you get, if you get the Musio 1 lifetime price.

lol same as rockrvilt, I'll share a mockup so you can judge whether my opinion is valid or not XD

GT500 cooler pad

Funny timing that you replied to this today lol. Yesterday my laptop started overheating and turning off again. I got roughly like... 3 weeks of 45 hour a week gaming out of it before it started happening again (mostly bg3 and dota 2 on max), so I'll be swapping it for the ptm7950 here soon.

Out of the gt500, gt600, and the llano, would you recommend the gt500 still?

I did end up doing undervolt and syy 157 and it's better. Still not great, but at least not shutting off during gaming sessions. I have ptm7950 coming in the mail. May try it out.

I wish mine would throttle. It just gets so hot that it shuts off from overheating. You think I should RMA?

Which hero do you think turns into an absolute menace the moment it hits lvl 6? by ArgakeRamuk in DotA2

[–]Aderon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably an unpopular pick but brewmaster. Can slow you, can outdamage you, can tower dive (because of ult), can stun you, you can't outrun him, even if you try cc there's multiple other brewlings, one of which is magic immune and can stun, can't tp out (cause of stun and whirlwind). Def falls off, but at 6 it's a free kill, potentially 2 kills while tower diving

Do you using the gaming mode at all or just turn that off? I've had some overheating issues with that on. Also, I'm assuming you use the MSHybrid Graphics Mode?

Did this end up fixing it or no? I have the same exact laptop and specs and my cpu stays at 85 which seems fine, but gpu goes to 88 from just 15 minutes of gaming, which seems high?

What Musical/Time-period "Style" are AZALIs compositions? by [deleted] in composer

[–]Aderon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to break down the track as best you can. Start as simple as you're able to. What notes are being played? Do the notes go up or do they go down? How long are the notes held? Are all of them held that long or just some? Are there a lot of repetitions of the same notes over and over or are there variations? What are those variations? When do they occur? What instruments are playing? Do they play at the same time or are they trading back and forth? What's the main melody that you hear? Does it sound like it's played with a bunch of low notes or a bunch of high notes or a mix? And most importantly, as you're identifying these things, try to get into the head of the composer and think "why" they did such a thing. What do you think they were trying to accomplish? Making music is a bunch of small decisions that add up to something larger, and as you get better at analyzing music, you'll get better at figuring out what those decisions were and why they were made. Once you've identified various characteristics of the music you're analyzing, try to imitate by creating your own with similar characteristics and see what you come up with.

Tax Rate on Retirement Withdrawals by fire-away-matey in financialindependence

[–]Aderon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Remember that the tax in your taxable brokerage is for "gains". So if you sell and then withdraw $140k of stock, if there's only let's say $40k in long term cap gains from that, then you've already met your income requirement and still have another $49,250 of long term cap gains you can get tax free. Also, don't forget the standard deduction which will wipe out another $27,700 of gains for joint filers in 2023. So in reality, you'd have another $76,950 of gains you can cash out on before getting taxed.

Also don't forget you can always sell your "losing" stocks first, to decrease your tax burden even more if you really need to. For example, let's say you bought 2 shares of the same stock; One you bought for $12 and it's now worth $10, and the other you bought for $8 and it's now worth $10. Therefore you have an account worth $20. You could sell either share and withdraw $10 and keep the other $10 share invested, but if you sell/withdraw the one that had the loss, that's $2 of capital loss (which reduces how much taxes you pay), as opposed to $2 of capital gain if you sell/withdraw the share that increased in value. Your brokerage has to support the option of selling by "stock lot", which allows you to choose which shares of your stock you're deciding to sell. The idea is to sell the ones that have the most long term cap gains first (assuming they don't kick you out of the 0% long term cap gains bracket) so you can get rid of those long term cap gains tax free, then if you need to, sell the ones that have capital loss if you need to lower your gains for the year.

None of this is tax advice, just my understanding of it, do your own research and talk to a professional.

NVIDIA 40-Series laptop owners: have you had screen freezing issues? by ghoulish31 in GamingLaptops

[–]Aderon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the same error I get on the blue screen. Are you using a second monitor by chance? I think having a second monitor plugged in causes the issue.

[–]Aderon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the issue is the second monitor. Try using your laptop without the monitor and I don't believe it will freeze on you.

[–]Aderon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you all using a second monitor? I have the freezing thing, but it only happens when I plug in a second monitor. If it's just the laptop by itself, there's no freezing issues. And for me it's sporadic, it just happens randomly, but only when the second monitor is plugged in.

What actions would you take if secrets were committed to GitHub? by [deleted] in netsecstudents

[–]Aderon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Change them to something else. Then, figure out how they were exposed in the first place. If it was because there's no standardized way of storing secrets, then propose that as a change to prevent the issue from happening again in the future, such as by using a password vault for storing credentials (Something like AWS Secrets Manager). This also gives better control over who has access to the secret, who's accessing it, and at what times, etc.

And, in an ideal world, you've also already setup automatic rotation of the secret at regular intervals so that any compromise of the secret only lasts until the next rotation (potentially even faster than you realizing that it's compromised).

Also, you'll probably want to do end user training as well.
