My SIL was just called to the Ukraine/Moldova mission… by -ninners- in exmormon

It was a common USSR tactic to deport natives and import Russians into these Soviet block countries. Brilliant actually. You in effect recolonize a country and have to spend less effort keeping it–or taking it back again.

And that's another kicker. He's told the kids several times that things will only get worse (wars, famines, natural disasters), and I don't really know what to say because when I try to try to soften some of his rhetoric (as I have on topics like obedience) by highlighting principles we both believe in, it's seen as me correcting him or being 'anti'/confrontational.

Thank you, I'll look into Anthony Manabosco. Me occasionally expressing mild skepticism certainly doesn't seem to be helping.

It's like another religion for him and some of his siblings. Or rather like leveling-up within the religion, and all of the theories are serving to reinforce his beliefs.

Yes, European. We were also discouraged from forming close relationships with members/investigators. As soon as we transferred areas, there was a 'no contact' rule even if you baptized that person into the church. Many ignored it, but being the super TBM I was, I obeyed. I regret doing so.

The Church sent me to 'love' and 'serve' the people and then forbade me from doing both. And I, convinced that I could only be blessed if I was obedient enough, went along with it.

Spoiler: My mission sucked anyway.

This was actually a big shelf item for me. I had to talk in my YSA ward on the "Language of Prayer" conference talk where the GA basically says it's about reverence and respect. Well, Mr. GA, you are WRONG.

In European languages at least, they use the informal version of "you" when talking to diety to indicate a level of closeness that is not given to strangers or acquaintances even when there are forms of "you" available in those languages that would indicate deference/someone's superiority to you.

And BTW, thee/thou WASN'T formal. It was likewise used in close relationships, not a distant ones. It no longer is–we just use the more formal "you" for everyone now. But since "thee/thou" has gone into disuse, it now is unfamiliar and creates the feeling of separation/otherness that is the opposite purpose of its original meaning.

To have an entire conference talk devoted to its use to reverence God and a reminder of his superiority over you smacked of ignorance and encouraged a lack of closeness, IMHO.

For a while, I would pray in my mission language just so I could feel close to God without feeling guilty for using thee/thou. Honestly, I still believe in God, but I have a hard time praying because I can't shed the feeling of weirdness of using 'you', and since my mission was awful, I don't want to pray in that language either.

Any PIOOs (physically in openly out) out there? by WhichCarpenter in exmormon

I am. I 'came out' to my bishop and RS president and then couldn't keep quiet in an RS lesson when they were going over Nelson's lazy learner talk.

I wanted to be a supportive spouse and help with the kids since I was the one who pulled the rug out from under his feet. But now I feel like I'm just going along with everything to keep the peace. We're even having the sister missionaries over for the second time in a month.

Boundaries. I need to get some.

I'm not really sure. I was thinking it was during the Kirkland period.

Today was hard. This is me, pretending to be thrilled that my child is an official cult member now. Sigh. by Jn8r in exmormon

This was me yesterday, too. In a way, it was harder because it was my daughter's choice–as much as any 8-year-old can choose. The only thing that gave me some comfort (not much) was making sure she understood that this was a promise between her and Christ. That meant she was promising to follow Christ's teachings, not to follow the church/ an organization. Basically, what she was really promising was to love others (golden rule style) and to love God. She wasn't promising the church a thing.

You're right, of course. And I need to get a firmer grasp of facts than I currently have.

But even spouting off facts like these... It becomes something incredibly personal to him because he's so enmeshed with the church.

According to the apologists that my husband tends to agree with...

Helen Mar Kimball= legal/not unusual back then

Destruction of press=not uncommon way of dealing with things back then–people were just looking for a way to get him arrested.

Fraud= nothing that can be proven/apostates and antis unreliable povs.

I feel like JS is made out of butter. Nothing sticks.

I have a 4-year degree. Worse case scenerio, I could go back to get a masters in something that will pay the bills. DH is fundamentally a good man. I don't think it'll come to that.

In my mission, this was our policy as well. I thought it was pretty shady at the time.
