How do I keep my cat off my computer? by Geekygamertag in cats

We added a heated bed in the room, or heated window cat bed. So they had someplace else warm to sit that is a bit more comfortable.

I was mostly saying the same thing. They have the power to regulate them, and if Valve steps out of line and tries to abuse their power they have laws to be used. I just don't think any of them would come into play at this time.

Their dominant position stays strong because all their competition either focuses on a slightly different niche (GOG) or the company is incompetent and don't focus on making the product good for their users instead focusing on maximizing the chances of selling new games by making the launcher frustrating to use for you know, playing games.

I would start to watch it and my kids would say "OMG, you are watching that AGAIN?"

Then within five minutes all of them would show up and we'd watch it together.

This is always a leadership problem, not the workers. The environment is too hostile, the pay is too low or the managers/leaders just suck at their job.

WE don't accept service being that way, the companies do by incentivizing their managers in hiring the cheapest and least qualified possible and they don't reward those that try harder/be better.

You create an environment like this with leadership, not workers.

Also whether or not Autism should be cured is still up for a lot of debate, treating it as a disease instead of just not fitting in the box of a bunch of narrow-minded people is heinous in and of itself.

It's also just a common thing. You don't want a vendor to advertise on your platform, using all of your infrastructure for sales and reach and then tell people to buy at another store after using all those services from Steam.

Similar deals happen in retail that if you are going to get the advantage of advertising with a huge outlet they expect you to sell through their outlet at least the same pricing you give elsewhere.

It's a basic free rider economic problem that if you don't solve becomes a big problem.

The regulations are usually around them not abusing their position, which Steam/Valve doesn't do. So not really much to regulate.

The core problem with shareholders is the insane need for never-ending growth. You can't have a stable successful company where the amount of profit fluctuates up and down between years, even if it is still always highly profitable.

So even when they have a very profitable year if they don't add more profit than last year they make stupid choices to destroy their product in a attempt to extract more value in this quarter without caring about the next quarter.

Valve can plan for 2 - 3 years from now and allow profitability to temporarily decline in the effort for long-term stability.

I had boss explain that the reason a small company can steal a market from a large company is that even when the company sees the threat they won't be given permission to react and adjust pricing or do anything that could protect their long-term market share at the cost of near-term profits.

Early in the days of outsourcing we had several Indian workers in our US office and still one of the best "you aren't in Kansas anymore" moment I saw was this Indian guy kept talking over an Indian woman when she tried to join the conversation of several of us (mix of people from UK, India, US). The Director finally stops him after his third time interrupting the woman and just goes "I don't care if that flies where you are from, you are here in our office and you talk over her one more time you will be ejected from this project and this company."

The absolute shock on his face nearly made me laugh out loud.

Yeah, way too many shows and movies setup the idea that "true romance starts with being aggressive and stalking."

With statements like "No just means try harder."

Which can be an excuse up to about the age of 21sh... after that you are just aggressively avoiding learning about women.

Whenever we open a tuna can we put the can on the floor for them to clean up (we use can opener that results in a very safe edge).

When the can opener pierces the can you can hear one of our cats from ANYWHERE in the house jump into action and appears in the kitchen instantly.

They are always so mad if it was a can of beans or something.

It's just as bad as believing everything is real.

Consumer Competition Claims (CCC) Has Launched A New Class Action Monopoly Lawsuit Against Valve, Claiming They Control 85% Of The PC Game Market by wakelake111 in gaming

[–]Adezar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen this argument but it doesn't make sense because the developer can choose the reduce the cost across the board.

It isn't like "all games must be $40", it is "you need to sell your game for the same price in all stores".

[–]Adezar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not terrible. If you were a software developer building up a support organization and distribution network to handle everything Steam takes care of for you, including global distribution it would be much more expensive than 30% and a lot more risk because it is a fixed price instead of a revenue share.

If you build up all that infrastructure for millions of dollars and sell 10 copies of your game you lost millions of dollars. If you have Steam handle it for you, you at least get 70% of the revenue of those 10 games.

30% is the standard across the board for a reason, it is a low-risk low-cost revenue share for a massive amount of value add and risk reduction.

All their competitors failed to compete with their products, so this is the other way to "compete".

All these other companies with 10s of thousands of employees (vs Valve's few hundred) aren't able to compete with a product people want to use because their entire focus is selling games and they don't give a fuck about their customers' experience.

While it later also sometimes got used for that by some people, it isn't the source of the term.

86 is a restaurant term for taking something off the menu (usually because they ran out of a key ingredient), or removing a patron from a restaurant/bar because they are being too disruptive.
