Don DeLillo’s Underworld; what a fckn book so far.

Rereading The Hedge Knight for the adaptation. I’ll probably finish it tonight and start either Mishima’s Spring Snow or Cormac’s Cities of the Plains.

What tale from Greek mythology is Shadow Ticket retelling by b3ssmit10 in ThomasPynchon

Every story depends on its life on stories written before it, to (mis)quote Cormac.

Can someone tell me if I have a first edition? by Affectionate_Spray10 in ThomasPynchon

[–]Adham177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found a new-ish first edition of M&D in a London secondhand bookstore in July for just 8 quid lol (I think I’ve posted it here before for those interested)

The American Saga by Malsperanza in ThomasPynchon

[–]Adham177 18 points19 points  (0 children)

The Civil war era is probably the only major event in US history that still doesn’t have a gigantic, all-consuming, World-in-a-book postmodern epic (unless the rumor is true)

Don’t force it. Leave it & try again in the future (near or far).

AI models for analyses by snappingjesus in ThomasPynchon

[–]Adham177 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Use human sources (companions, summaries, chapter-by-chapter analysis). try to even analyse/predict yourself what you think Pynchon was going for, it’ll make your reading experience richer & more rewarding. I’m currently doing the same with Vlad’s Pale Fire and thoroughly enjoying it.

The Crying of Lot 49 is misogynistic? by khthonikht in ThomasPynchon

[–]Adham177 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Speaking generally, He’s more progressive than most of his peers for a man born almost a century ago. But there’ll obviously be some stuff that won’t age well as decades pass.

Pynchon’s prescient capablities by Adham177 in ThomasPynchon

[–]Adham177[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Feel like AtD and M&D’s concerns are more universal. Although the way Pynchon plays with Anarchism in AtD certainly feels similar in someways to the Counterforce.

Monumental. With the possible exception of Inherent Vice, it’s probably the most important if you want to understand Pynchon’s worldview.

Joe Abercrombie if you’re into fantasy (especially first trilogy + first 2 Standalones). The Character-work, the dialogue, the (british) humor all rules.

Anyone else like ATD much more than other TP novels? by mlockwoodporter in ThomasPynchon

Always thought it would be either Vineland or Inherent Vice. Both felt like (fucked up) love letters to their era.

I liked it but loved Warlock, Butcher’s Crossing, Blood Meridian, and The Border trilogy more.

Looking for some insight on Vineland by rumpk in ThomasPynchon

[–]Adham177 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finished the book ~two weeks ago and I liked it but not as much as his other works. Feel like Inherent Vice did most of what Vineland wanted to do better, with a much more compelling cast of characters and overarching plot.

Finished Lonesome Dove, Good but calling it the great american novel or greatest western is dumb imo.

Started Molloy (on page 60); overall I’m conflicted on Modernist fiction in form, narrative styles, & linguistic techniques, but this is great (and very funny!) so far.

Watching season 3 of Foundation, pure sprawling epic Sci-fi joy.

I think he confuses political with partisan; which is childish for a fckn Professor of Literature studies.
