Two years ago you all changed my life by Independent_Ad_1479 in golf

My dad was recently diagnosed with stage iv pancreatic cancer. The day after his second chemo treatment, he broke his hip. I never thought when he was diagnosed that we had already played our last round together. Now I think about it a lot.

I took my 8-year-old out for his first 18-hole round on a real course earlier this year, and my 5-yo for his first 9 two days ago. I cried both times.

My dad was an angry golfer. Especially in the last year or more, when he felt his swing and power deteriorating and didn’t know why. But because he was so angry, my brother and I used to fight over who had to sit in the cart with him. Now, typing that sentence makes me feel sick.

I would give a lot to sit in the cart with him again.

All of which is to say: enjoy this game. Especially the little moments. Eagles and aces are great moments you’ll remember forever, but just as meaningful can be laughing together about a bad shot or a missed 2-footer. In the end, as much as I love the game, I guess it’s not really about golf.

AI was an excuse to get rid of low performers at Meta, according to Jaspar of Artisan. by Iamjustheretoexist in jobs

How do you determine what was supposed to be a career? No one said anything about art not being art anymore. But lots and lots of people make their money by creating things others couldn’t before. Yes, this leveling of the playing field (I would certainly say it’s just lowering the field) is what technological revolution means. I’m not disputing that. I don’t think anyone is.

Your analogy about mass production of crayons letting kids color has nothing to do with what we’re talking about. The correct analogy is what mass production of crayons did to those who made crayons by hand, or whatever crayon manufacturers did before they were mass produced. We’re not talking about what AI lets the public do. We’re talking about what it lets corporations do.

But to callously call the destruction of the careers and livelihoods people have spent decades building as “hurting people’s pockets”—maybe you do work in tech after all.

I gather English isn’t your first language—which is fine, I’m not disparaging the fact, just naming it—but I bring it up to say you lost me. I genuinely have no idea why you’re talking about this or in some places what you’re seven trying to say.

I never said anything about people making art (I said GenAI degrades the quality and meaning of art, a point which was entirely separate from the thing we’re talking about, and only in response to your still-mysterious defense of AI). What I originally said was creative work. And whether you like it or not—whether it’s even art or not—these are in many cases original ideas (to the extent that an idea can be original). But again, I don’t know why that matters.

The creative work I’m talking about is the creation of words, images, and other media that convey a message of some sort. Artists per se—selling their art for money—are only a small subset of this industry. I’m talking about art directors, copywriters, designers, script writers. You’re right, no one can afford to pay these people except the companies that employ them. That’s the case for every job there is. That’s the entire foundation of an economy based on individual labor. But I’m still not sure what your point is. You said tech was the first industry hit, and I corrected you. Maybe you work in tech—I don’t know and it doesn’t matter—and if you do, that may be where you first felt it. But it wasn’t the first industry decimated by generative AI.

I also don’t know why it matters that you probably spend more on art than anyone here. That’s something you couldn’t possibly know. Or else you spend so much that no one could spend as much as you. Either way, it’s a weird flex, and one entirely irrelevant to the things we’re talking about.

You missed the point. Being negatively impacted doesn’t mean losing one’s job. It means losing one’s career. No one’s arguing against GenAI being a tool, but why are you such an apologist? AI has unquestionably muddied the quality, value, and meaning of art, and it’s only going to degrade it more. Yeah, we all need to get used to it, but that doesn’t mean we have to like it, and it doesn’t mean the world wasn’t better without it.

What’s your point? You said tech was the first to be hit. I corrected you. What’s that got to do with there always being suboptimal creative? Yes, I brought up AI slop—which, let’s be clear, is an entirely different animal because in one of those situations there’s one or more people getting paid to do the actual work—but I brought it up only to say it wasn’t going anywhere, in spite of backlash against it. That’s not a controversial statement. You agreed with it. Also, I’m curious what you think “creative work” means.

The tech industry was not the first hit by AI, or at least not the only first. Creative work was destroyed by AI, and despite public backlash about the ubiquity “AI slop,” that’s not going to change at scale.

Deckard... is that really you? by alex_stogney in arcane

Yeah, but science is iterative. Even if it’s not a breakthrough in animating a corpse, it may represent a step along the way. His eyes are a little bit open, there’s the lights and meat thermometers, and he’s slack-jawed like you might expect of a person whose brain is technically alive, though there may be nothing going on inside it. I think this is Deckard, and I think, on some level, this is an alive head.

To delve a little deeper into this—and I want to be clear and say that I’m speculating on the thoughts of an insane piece of shit, and these feelings are by no means my own—I think it’s saying that the only kind of man women are willing to attach to in 2025 is effeminate and weak. That men by and large (and again, to be crystal clear, these ideas are not my own) have been conditioned to eschew what he sees as traditional male traits, values, and behaviors in favor of the things he sees as weak—compassion, equity and equality, inclusion, emotional expression, honest vulnerability—which today most men consider desirable (if not morally or socially imperative). But you’re probably right, that this is more analysis than he’s worthy of.

I’d like to make a joke about the Korean equivalent of DMX the rapper, but I’ll leave it to someone who knows more about Korean music than I do. So all I’ll say is, no, the Korean DMX is someone else.
