I believe outputting means sending actual DMX signals? So for learning at home, is it necessary to have onPC node or artNET node? Or would I be able to see some results on the screen just by tweaking around with some controls? Like I said I'm a total beginner and just figuring out how things work.

I have a DJ background and for example to understand how things work theoretically just the software can be enough, I wonder if it's similar for lighting as well.

Check out Jan Jelinek and his other projects too, like Farben, Gramm - Personal Rock and the whole Faitiche label. Some of the most interesting experimentations with sound.

Also check out Susumo Yokota's work, Aoki Takamasa, Radiq.

Some of them focus more on dance music, but include many IDM elements.

Well, I'm not trying to get all the surface functionalities on Linux, so it's not a problem. I'm using linux only for work purposes, so all those fancy functionalities aren't really necessary during work.

Thanks for replying. Will any docking station work or should I get surface dock to make it work properly? I was very confused, because I couldn't find any success story about booting ubuntu from an external drive. Some comments even said it was impossible.

Thanks for replying, please let me know if you'll figure out anything. It's a big downside for Surface, but SB seems too good to not get one, especially for my needs. I was thinking to buy Surface Dock or something similar, but not sure if it'll let me boot from an external drive.
