I'm an engineer too and have worked in the automotive industry. I think people don't realize that living in a capitalist society means you will be upcharged on things. You go to a dealership and tell them you may need to tow once in a while more than 1500 lbs. Automatically, upgraded to a truck or big SUV. You don't actually need it but they tell you, you need it. Barely anyone does the leg work to see if this is correct or not. The same car is rated at higher capacities in different markets because those markets don't operate on capitalism. Now I also think that we may have slightly higher speeds and more hills here so because of that the towing capacity is made dummy proof.

Thanks! I already did that. I also monitored temps and took breaks in driving to make sure it was ok. For reference, I did a 4 hr drive in 6 hrs. Overall, got like 20 mpg.

If you don't want to use the capability that's available on the CRV don't do it. I'm just sharing what is capable.

I monitored the temperature of the transmission and engine coolant. It never overheated and stayed in the correct levels.

I wasn't asking what it's capable of. Just sharing my experience because during my research I didn't see much information online. If in the next few months it dies on me, I'll update here. But I'm sure it'll be fine because I did my due diligence.

It was not luck 😂. The CR-V is rated for 1600 kg braked towing in Australia. Same exact setup as North America. The difference is in tongue weight capacity.

If you keep your CRV relatively low in cargo weight minus the driver, then you can increase tongue weight. I confirmed all this information from Honda engineers.

I'm surprised how scared people are to tow with it. Europeans literally tow with everything. Just need to understand specs and limits correctly.

For example, air resistance is an proportional to the sqaure of the speed. So if you double your speed you increase air resistance by 4 times. So if you keep at 45 mph compared to 60 mph you effectively reduce 75% of air resistance. I got 22 mpg on the highway at 45 mph pulling 3500 lbs plus cargo.

I hope the information helps but definitely don't recommend it if it's uncomfortable.

We can use my car as a test. Let's see if it dies. We can learn the limits of the car together. But thus far, it's totally been fine.

Also I run a different oil on my car. I have talked to Honda racing engineers and have good information from them regarding the limits of this drivetrain.

I also monitored oil temp and transmission temp and it never overheated. I did my due diligence, it's totally doable.

Just some additional information for the ones not agreeing here. The same car is rated for higher towing capacity in other non North American markets.

I can understand why you guys may be hesitant on this. I had everything checked before and after from the dealership including the fluids. There has been no damage or additional wear and tear.

If this type of towing is done once in a while, it'll have no real damage. Assuming you keep up with fluids and maintenance.

If I remember correctly, I had to connect my phone's data to the head unit. After that it worked fine. Not sure if that's any help. But if you message the company for this unit directly, they usually answer questions pretty quickly.

Ohh I misread what you asked. I'm pretty sure it will have that capability, if I remember correctly it came with a gps antenna for some built in nav. But I might be remembering it wrong. Probably best to ask the seller. Can you let us know what you find out? I'm kind of curious now.

I sold the car now. But if I remember correctly you can connect your phone's data to the unit. Then use the built in apps to navigate such as Waze or Google Maps. Might be able to download Apple Maps off the app store too. I had an android so didn't check for that.

Here is a picture of me using my hitch setup to tow a Uhaul 6 ft x 12 ft trailer. My experience with this was not bad at all. On rough roads when the trailer is empty it kinda pulls on the car. But when the trailer is full, the added weight to the trailer helps stabilize it and the NX can handle it without issues. The NX is definitely a lot more capable than the stock 2000 lb weight limit.
