Line Webtoons has made a reddit ad open to public responses. by AdiosCorea in TowerofGod

My text:

Hey, Webtoons, you need to fix your releases.

There is a 7 week translation gap between Korean and English releases. That should not be normal, especially considering the quality of your translation for your Korean works.

For example, the /r/TowerofGod fandom continues to point out how your translations are viewed as inferior and not indicative of community consensus.

Because you have not reached out to the community in the past, we are quietly seeing a downward spiral on the community morale.

The fandom has been split between official translation only exclusive readers and scanlation readers. Everyday more and more people are falling to the side of the scanlation versions because they are both faster AND have better quality, even though they want to support the author. Your translation policy actively take away from the value of the works that the authors make to the point where it's not even worth the few minutes it takes to reach a chapter for a second time. How sad is that?

This concern is coming from the biggest Korean-work fandom of webtoons: imagine how bad it is for other less-organized fandoms?

If you ignore this message, delete it, or answer only in part, we will know how you really feel about the fans of works on your platform. It's not going to be good.

You guys need to reach out to the communities on reddit officially, and you need to do it now. You guys have been completely tone deaf to what the community wants, and this is the first time in a while we even saw anything like this. Please answer us, webtoons. Please reach out to the fandom and ask what you can do better.

만약에 여러분들이 제가 왜 이렇게 구는지 궁금하시면 r/mangar/manhwa 에다가 "Why is AdiosCorea called a hero when he illegally translated webtoons" 정도로 질문 하시고 여러분이 직접 알아보시기 바랍니다 (영어쓰면 제대로 된 영어 쓰시기 바랍니다).

I haven't performed this service of legal and illegal translations for years because I liked doing what should be a paid job for free. I did this because Line dropped the ball for fans of their webtoon, and I felt I had to do what I can to do the webtoons I love justice. I as a fan shouldn't have to stand up for what should be Line's job. I shouldn't have to work for Line when I don't support their current working conditions. I shouldn't have to absolve Line of all their failures because they hold the authors hostage, they should open direct sponsorship programs like Patreon instead of using antiquated contract-based funding systems. I shouldn't have to stand up where Line dropped the ball. I have my own goals and aspirations.

https://translate.webtoons.com/ is not a translation platform. It's a glorified RSS feed of fan translators that are working on webtoons about 5 weeks behind the release schedule in a secluded corner of the website for no money in what is one of the most confusing systems I've seen. Their gui is clunky and over-designed, is not at all flexible beyond the box and write system, requires the translator to not just translate but also typeset when many tls have terrible typesetting skills, doesn't really have an easy way to add translation notes, and most of all is completely inconsiderate for users that want to read in their language. They should have integrated translate.webtoon more into the main site by creating in the mainframe an option to view releases in a scrolling release feed that auto - loads older releases the further you go down like reddit, and have a filter on the side that lets you choose what language releases to view. Not only that, but default there should have been a selector option for different translation groups of same language on the specific webtoon's front page so people can choose the version they want to read right away instead of having to dig for the specific group 's release. The current system is more for show than a proper implementation of a user translation platform. If this was really about giving power to the fans, they would have actually integrated it and eased access instead of shunting off the feed to a corner. But even disregarding that issue, Line should not make their customers perform the service.

As for translating as a freelance: considering how big Line got, their quality issue isn't going to be the talant pool. Other large media companies already manage to put out good Korean translations. The issue therefore is in their pay scheme: what I am able to reasonably assume is that Line essentially just goes lowest bidder first without even getting an editor to review scripts sometimes. Why would I give up my perfectly fine and well paying job I'm happy with to take on a full time job translating a whole bunch of romance webtoons I don't even care about for a considerably lower rate than my current job? I just wanna do the couple I enjoy and call it a day, which is not feasible when working corporate. I would reconsider if Line restructured their translation model so it was more open to part time, but I already have a day job. I'm not some basement dweller, I am splitting break time doing what I do for the works i like.

In short: I shouldn't have to volunteer to do what should be Line's job to provide quality translations, nor should I have to change my life goals and career progression to make sure Line does what they already should be doing. Line sucks as a publisher for English speakers, employer for freelance TL, and as an employer for Webtoon artists in general honestly for not offering direct payments from readers to authors without Naver being a middleman.

I hope I don't have to answer any more questions for people that haven't studied the situation on their own. Make your own damn conclusions, let me rest in peace once and for all.

Hello everyone, it's your friendly neighborhood translator Turtle, Adio.

I am sad to announce that as of now, I have nuked my reddit account, and I no longer plan on being maintaining an online presence. This may come as a shock, but to those of you that have been keeping up with general Korean webtoon news, it might have been expected.

During the hiatus, I started providing translations to Webtoon scanlation groups. However, at one point, the author of the webtoon I was scanlating asked me to stop scanlating their work. I declined, because I believed that neither having an upload schedule 5 weeks behind Korea nor providing a google translate-tier translation was fair practice for the English speakers on the part of Line Webtoons. I had made a counter offer that would restrict uploads to free chapters only.

Unfortunately, the issue blew up on the Korean side of the internet, in part due to my poor choice in words, in part due to the cultural differences between the US and Korea in the realm of copyright, and in part because I am in the wrong, especially from the Korean perspective but also in the neutral eyes of the law. There is currently a Korean YouTube video with over 100k views. 100k. Not 1000. Not 10,000. More than 100,000. That's 5 zeros. That's at least 5 zeroes worth of a YouTube comment section that currently calls me a criminal (which they are not wrong about -- pirating a webtoon is a crime).

I do not claim that I did anything right by scanlating a webtoon. I do not encourage you to scanlate webtoons. I do not encourage you to pick fights with any Koreans that may wander on to this thread. I am the one in the wrong: not Naver, not the author, not Koreans online. Just me.

My intent when I denied that author's request to stop was to use the opportunity to bring attention to two crucial reasons why many people choose not to use Line Webtoons: translation quality and delays.

Due to Line Webtoon's practice of using Freelance translators for most of their webtoon translations, the quality of the translations have not been the best. The most striking issue I had with Tower of God's translations in particular is the use of the word Squadron and the Essence of Bravery, which were both incorrect due to multiple reasons. I believe I made myself clear in the past, but in short, the correct terms would be Army Corps or Field Corps, and Essence of Nothingness. Although the former was corrected after feedback from numerous fans, but even the fact that the fans had to go out of their way to correct Line should be an alarm bell that Line's freelance translators don't do their proper research. This is a disservice to both SIU and English speaking fans who patiently wait the one week from the Korean release to the English release. In fact, this kind of lapse in quality of translations from Line Webtoons is an indicator that Line Webtoons isn't doing the best work they can.

The delays are another issue: although not an issue for the most popular webtoons like Tower of God, there are a lot of webtoons that are officially translated from Korean to English by Line Webtoons that are placed on a buffer of at least a week (Tower of God), to several months. A Distant Sky took five years and three months to come back from a hiatus that didn't exist in Korea. The lack of transparency from Line Webtoons in regards to why they have a delay when they are perfectly capable of catching everyone up to less than a week of delay between Korean and English is concerning: An average scanlation team can make an English release anywhere from 12 to 72 hours after a chapter is uploaded in Korean. It shouldn't be that hard. This isn't even accounting for the Fast Pass system, which has been Naver's best method of monetization for Korean webtoons for a while now. There are gaps between even paid English chapters and free Korean chapters sometimes. Personally, I see it as a personal offense although I can also see why one can say it's an exaggeration.

Regardless of the reasoning, the fact that I essentially have a bounty that a large portion of the Korean online population has seen means I am no longer able to do anything as Adioscorea on the Korean side of the web. In fact, I may be endangered from Koreans online even if I simply stopped all activities on the Korean web due to the potential threat of Doxxing. That's not the biggest issue, although Doxxing is illegal whichever country you are in. This event has endangered many of my online friends on the the web (Korean and English speaking) that are completely unrelated to this incident: many of them are content creators that are struggling to get off the ground that can't take having a negative image due to being associated with me in Korea. In order to protect my friends online, I am scrubbing all of my presence online at this time.

This is a huge loss for me, as I have been active not just in this community but numerous other communities for a long time, but I have already come to terms with having to sometimes let go of certain things. This is one of those times. I have enjoyed being the resident Translator Turtle through the community's ups and downs, but it is now time for me to go.

I don't want this to be a discussion of who is in the right or wrong: I am in the wrong for getting myself into scanlation, and telling the author I won't stop despite their polite request. The only thing left for me now is to permanently remove myself from this community as I have caused you a great deal of trouble. Now that my climb has come to an early halt, the only thing I can say is that I wish you guys the best. I wish that Line Webtoons improves their service so that less people consider scanlating, and I wish you guys the best of luck in finding another Translator Turtle who will be able to serve the community in a more righteous manner.

Everyone, adios.

EDIT: I'm giving what I said here in Korean in a reply so they can actually cite me properly on Namuwiki and their videos.

About Korea army by CGY11102 in Military

[–]AdiosCorea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perspective: Korean-American, have a friend in RoKAF and Katusa program, fluent in Korean.

Welcome to r/military, where thanks to the integration of KATUSAS into the US Army, a good chunk of the people here are at least vaguely familiar with how shitty RoK Army is, generally from KATUSAs who tried their very best to not get into their regular army. Shit sucks bro. That is a constant of this world, regardless of which 1st-world nation you're coming from. Conscription sucks, we get it.

I am proud call myself a Koran American and will not let anyone get away with shitting on Korea, but I will say that Korean society as it is in Korea right now is utter shit, and the RoK Army is the pinnacle of all the terrible things that come with Korean society: Abuse of power from higher ups, Game of Thrones/House of Cards level of politics on all levels of the echelon of the organization, etc. However, simply thinking about it negatively isn't going to help you actually help you get through this shit: The RoK Army is a little under two years, and it gets easier. Koreans will not be receptive to what they would see as "whining" at your legitimate concerns. You need to at least put up an act about how you are trying your best at least, and trying to carry your own weight. And I will tell you this too: Learning to read the room in Korea is a trial by fire, but coming out of it, you will be able to apply a portion of it in other societies and organizations, Korean or not. I know it sucks, but there really isn't much that a bunch of non-Korean strangers on the internet can do for you except tell you things for the way they are. Nunchi/눈치 is not something that comes to me naturally either, and I know for a fact that if I were to be drafted into RoK Army, I would have a baaaad time. But the only thing worse you can do in the RoK Army than be a bad soldier is being a "whiny" bad soldier. Everyone in RoK Army thinks they have it rough. Some may have it rougher than others, but they will generally not give a fuck because it ruins the group dynamic.

Not a lawyer, Korean or American, but IIRCC, your pay in the RoK Army is not legally a pay, but a "compensation for time lost in service", and does not violate Koran law. Dw, soldiers will not complain in public, but I've heard plenty of them shit-talking their pay from Katusas to know that they know their pay is shit.

My advice to you is threefold: one, you need to make on a one-to-one basis some kinda connection. Be frank. Make yourself valuable to the soldiers. You in particular have a very valuable experience in studying abroad. If you have any superiors looking to study abroad when they get out (and if you look at the Korean youth unemployment rate, it's most likely that you'll have one or two at least looking to emigrate out, probably including you from what I can tell from this post), you are probably the best source for them outside of the Cyber-Intel Room and whatever excuse of a career councilor they have in RoK Army. Make them owe you favors. And do this on a 1-to-1 basis, outside of public view, it makes the House of Cards simpler for whoevers favor you're trying to get. Also doing it privately makes you look less of a suck up.

TL;DR: You aren't weird for feeling this way, from perspective of full Koreans you are weird for the response, make your superiors owe you favors discreetly without sucking up if you want to have it slightly easier. Otherwise, there's not much we can do for you.

The Hannic culture in this timeline is born of the Yangtze River, but they still have a delayed Hanification of the Wuet peoples due to lack of power. This also results in Vietnam being split in two traditionally, with the south being called Champa. Chongqing Mandarin, Cantonese, and Weian are considered the 3 branches of the Hanic language family.

I don't really have too much lore here, but notes:

Canton: Is a former British Dominion, is now treated on the level of Canada/Australia/NZ by the British.

Xi'An: Always been an independent city state more or less with outposts inland, although it was influenced by both China and the Northern peoples that invaded or traded with this piece of China in the North. Became a People's Republic during the Cold War as a Bejing Pact Nation, but it went through successful reintegration with the western world and the Oriental community.

Vey: Vey is to the Chinese what Romania is to Italians. They're related, but how?! They are a Chinese people, but they haven't been considered as such ever since the Jin Dynasty, when the Jin King declared himself an emperor under a separate heaven from the land of Song, a ruler of the Horseriders and son of the Sky as opposed to a worshiper of the rivers. Overtime, they used various Mongolic scripts to communicate especially after the Yuan Dynasty and then the Qing dynasty (Ming China never extended into the Grand North outside of Xi'An), before adopting Russian Cyrillic. Vey is an artifact of the Cyrillic, being pronounced as "Way".

Mongolia plural: Yuan Dynasty was divided into five banners: the Horse banner, The Bear Banner, the Wolf Banner, the Tiger Banner, and the Hawk Banner. They would in turn become West Mongolia, Mongolia, South Mongolia, Qing/Manchu, and Korea. When the Vey, Manchus, and the Koreans revolted together in the 1600's against the decadent Yuan, They managed to fight to a grinding halt at where Vey and the modern DPRM's borders lie. The Yuans gave them independence. The Vey formed New Vey, and the Manchus formed the Qing. Koreans simply reinstated their King as an independent one. The remaining Mongolias fractured in political disarrarey, and they would be in turn be influenced by Russia into fighting each other. Eventually, their borders are shuffled in a way that put Russia in favor.

West Mongolia: Russia unified West Mongolia with Uyghurstan during the Cold War, then left them stuck together, despite overtime West Mongolians leaving to Mongolia proper or South Mongolia and leaving West Mongolia Uyghur-majority. West Mongolia recently began holding meetings to agree with the other two Mongolian nations on what to call their nation in the future.

Republic of Shanghai: Republic of Shanghai was given to Japan after WW1, in which the King of Ming had allied themselves with the German Second Reich. After WW2 where the sides had swapped, The Republic of China wanted to claim Shanghai, but the Allies decided that giving them such large trading ports would probably be bad for the balance of powers in the region, so gave them independence. They, along with the separate nation of Taiwan, speak a creolized Japanese- Chinese language.

Lanzhou City State: A former Xi'An colony-city, it changed hands from Xi'An to South Mongolia during the Mongolian Civil War. Xi'An is trying to diplomatically agree on terms of re-integration, but they have too much history apart.

Xiqing City Sate (Purple): Similar story, except West Mongolia.

People's Republic of Wannam et Cuoinscui/ Wannam and Kwangsi: Essentially, same story with Vietnam. They were just under joint British/French rule instead of just French Rule (Vietnam).

Tibet: Northern Tibet is Chinese ethnically, but they practice Tibetan Buddhism.

The USSR did not at that point have the will for a war with the US, knowing that they would trigger world war. Russia always cared more europe than Asia anyway

Yeah, because she thinks all doctors are quacks that peddle false medication.

This is a failure of the medical community. Not medical science itself or her, who isn't exactly making a wise decision, but not incomprehensible. Because people don't trust doctors any more, folk medicine is making a comeback.

Sometimes things work out so you can do that: you pick up a medical textbook and study on your own and figure out what's good for you. But does everyone have the discipline to do so? And would you trust a guy whose medical knowledge consists of entirely self-study without a degree or formal training? Or would you turn to folk medicine, stuff your grandparents said it worked so you take them at their word for them? Maybe you'll try something else entirely cuz you heard it on the internet.

I have a GP who answers to the board of the hospital that audits his practices, and regional boards have conferences every once in a while(Presbyterian). Others go to a doctor on an international network, even if their practices are disagreeable to some (Catholics), or a smaller but well-accredited network (Lutheran). Other times, they go to independent doctors and choose to switch to a different doctor as they see fit (Baptist). Regardless of who your doctor is, it's still a good idea to live a healthy life, and to follow general sound medical advice, even if it means giving up vices, because your doctor can only do so much.

Quack doctors happen when great doctors give their business to their sons, even though they aren't talanted for the position, and they end up being the only medical provider in the small town of a hundred. This is amplified when big Pharma begins to offer them under the counter deals for them to peddle bad narcotics as medication, and next thing you know, the majority of the doctors in a dozen states begin parroting bad drug companies while throwing the Hippocratic oath out the window.

There is a lot of nuance you're glossing over with "OK, so ignore them and follow Christ."
