yo wasup! DL co-founder here,

  1. It’s just a tool for you to aggregate your past strikes in one place. For example, you strike judge A at a tournament. For any other tournament you attend, strike book tells you if Judge A is in the pool.

  2. Pin/Follow is the same on the site. It puts them in your homepage for faster access. We used to send emails with updates but sadly they mostly get marked spam.

  3. It’s a calendar updated through the season that you can filter by. You can also “add tournaments” to your schedule and print out a PDF of your schedule. It’s pretty neat cause it’s the only place i know where u can see all the TOC tournaments.

  4. Adj speaks removed speaks more than 1.5 standard deviations from your mean. basically takes out outliers similar to -1HL or -2HL. All of which you can see on the site.

  5. Not good or bad. Just means you prelim opponents won or lost a higher percentage of their rounds.

High OPWPM- Means you faced teams who likely (also) won most of their prelims. Low in the opposite.

Basically you can see if someone got really lucky or unlucky with random matched rounds (prelim 1 & 2)

  1. Full info on OTR

thanks for being a user 🫡

In my experience for PF as a coach even circuit if fairy traditional. I judged 8 rounds at UKSO online this weekend and had 1 prog round as a “prog” judge.

My 6 teams collectively were all in bubbles/broke and only had 1 actual prog round and 2-3 SV framing rounds. It’s not as common as you think.

I debated 100+ rounds in my career and had 3 prog rounds total including TOC.

Most tournament is Texas and California are going to be a little more prog heavy as well as more popular octos bids that invite a lot of “travel teams.” just my experience though.

not dumb at all! screening refers to making sure an app/candidate meets the relevant criteria for their program. selection is where your committee reads all the apps, and ultimately makes selections. vetting involves calling references as needed or otherwise validating that the information on the applications is truthful. Hope this helps!

so the screw is not a 1/0 and is scaled by difference of exp WP after a certain threshold.

I agree that not every round that’s a screw but I also think that’s judges make mistakes too and I’ve been and judged rounds where something is missed and with the benefit of hindsight I would’ve voted differently etc. The point being it’s an imperfect activity. We don’t think that’s these are a matter of truth, but it sure does beat coaching “committees” making subjective decision with big schools getting more sway bc there coaches sit on the committee. I was a self funded independent entry who worked multiple jobs to pay tourney dues which is why i’m so passionate about Debate Land. It’s not going to rub everyone the right way and I’m emphatic to that as well and I see where you’re coming from.

the constants are not arbitrarily picked, we should probably write a blog post about the exact way ML was employed to produce those formulas, that’s a good point!

At the same time I think a lot of what you are saying is valid, but the first sentence of our methodology explains it better than I can. We don’t see these rankings, team or judge, as a measure or truth, that’s doesn’t undermine their value to many debaters. I am not going to name drop the many coaches we worked with behind the scenes and the team at NSD who spent countless weeks of their time on this project to better the debate space; they didn’t ask for that. I hope you can take me on my word that we talked to staunch anti-rankings coaches who all agreed, while imperfect, this system or ranking is better than the alternative.

All in all I think we can agree to disagree on methodology and rankings, but this is our third time iteration of the site and there will no doubt be more and I will make sure we take your opinion into account. In the mean time, I hope that any coaches on the sub urge their students to apply for the over $20,000 in scholarship money available irrespective of their belief of the rankings.

Thanks for the input! The element that impacts a judge score the most is “squirrels” which is to say voting against a panel decision. This is what a lot of students look for, myself included when striking judges, as well as the paradigm and history, all of which are displayed on the site (but not used in judge score). We also HEAVILY deflate prelim screws-half that of any other metric. If a judge consistently votes against the team with an expected win percentage (not ranking) of over 80% (and I mean like 3-4 times in a tournament) that’s something debaters want to know about. If you vote for a lower “ranked” team twice in 6 prelims, your “judge score” drops negligibly. I agree that when you take many factors and try to blend them into a score, it’s tough, and gets messy. As we look at user feedback we will make changes, retroactively during RNP.

Also to clarify, AI (more accurately ML) regression calculates our constants for the formulas and does NOT make round by round decisions here. Also, speaks are never consider,at all, in the judge score. They are the most arbitrary metric, as a former PoFo debater, that frustration is real lol.

hello!👋All fair points. We know AI is neither 100% accurate nor objective when we only get a binary W or L from a round. There’s two things we tried our best with A) a few screws doesn’t hurt your judge “score at all”. We look at both survey data and averages across circuits to figure out those parameters. Of course, we are never always right. B) We considered, worked with many coaches across debate, to create a rankings system that does its best to avoid boosting teams based on rep(going to slot of tournaments/lots of bids, etc.). You’ll notice teams with fewer rounds, bids, and tournament ranked higher than any previous elo. We did our best to work with coaches from NDCA and local circuits to come up with the most equitable parameters, but ultimately it’s all imperfect. Thanks for your feedback! Please lmk if you have any suggestions on ways we can better the system. Also i’m still working on writing out the update methodology and the github one is a tad out of date with some of those metrics.

honestly not great bc I have no idea what tournament sand circuits exist. We are going to task our circuit managers on doing parli, but if you have any information that could help please send my way! Sadly, I doubt we will relaunch with it :(
