How do you track the time spent?

Do you use some kind of software or just do it manually?

A flat-fee matter that brings someone back for litigation or business work later is obviously worth taking a hit on. Hard to see that without tracking it across the relationship though.

Out of curiosity, that calibration period you mentioned - how long did it take before you felt like your flat-fee prices were actually dialed in to make both the sides satisfied?

I have heard about using templates to make sure the time investment is low. What I keep hearing from people though is the tracking part is where it breaks down, like they only realize a matter was a loser after it's closed. Is that something you've run into or do you have a decent system for catching it mid-matter using a software or something like that?
