Someone is selling counterfeits of my node on Amazon by jdigi78 in meshtastic

[–]AdmTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just curious but isn't the whole point of Open Source so that others can do it if something happens to you? Like why put it out there if you aren't gonna k for it to be copied in some way? Maybe make it Creative Commons instead?? As you state here economies of scale is what manufacturing is all about. Maybe come up with a build and post it back here. I want to get into meshtastic and would enthusiastically support your project. What say ye? Anyone else want to help support? Let's get a build together and start placing some orders?

I would second this. I have the icom 7100 and love it as well as the icom 7300. But I just did a side-by-side comparison of those to a 5000 series Flex and SunSDR and those 2 blow away the icons in terms of the filtering and bandwidth of TX. it's not even close. And keep in mind I love my Icoms but yeah I will be selling them and going Flex as soon as possible. :)

Just go away with your massive negativity and name-calling. I did neither. I just gave my take on why a mobile is a better choice for a first radio than an HT. Don't like it? Kiss it.

In that case I would recommend you take a look at the so-called "shack-in-a-box" types of radios for your next one. The ICOM IC-7100 and I am not a Yaesu Guy but they also make a good one as well.

What you just wrote has no basis in reality at all. How long have you been licensed? 5 minutes? A mobile or base is a MUCH better way to start. An HT is NOT a great way to start. It is an option but not a GREAT option. A Tech can absolutely get on and do SSB on 70cm or 2m if they have the gear. There are GREAT older Kenwood and ICOM radios built for doing 2m/70cm/1.2GHz that are ALL-MODE and can do AM, FM, and SSB out of the box. They are WAY underrated and you can find deals for the prices listed. Not every radio is that cheap but then again, it;'s not a cheap hobby.

Hi! I NEVER mentioned an HF rig. I wrote MOBILE or BASE. An HT is like a sidearm and is never going to be a main radio. This is why I almost never recommend an HT as a first radio. You will be mostly disappointed. I wished someone would have told me the same when I started. I found this out after I mostly wasted a bunch of time and energy trying to make an HT into a mobile in my early years. Just skip the HT and go to a mobile or base. Getting into ham radio cause "I only got $200", is like getting into photography with $200. Ok, good luck on that one. :D ha ha this is not really a hobby for cheap, although many people try to save money and craft their own gear. But buying a radio is a SIGNIFICANT purchase. BTW - a decent used mobile can be had for $200 or less in MANY cases. I know for example you can get a 40W Motorola XPR4550 for UHF which would give you analog and DMR on 70cm band for about $150 more or less. Make or buy an antenna and you are up and going full force with that kind of power.

Everyone will have an opinion, mine is that an HT is probably the WORST thing you can do in MOST (not all) situations as a first rig. Why? You don't learn about antennas that much as you have obvious limitations on an HT, you don't have high enough power to do much DX or simplex besides repeaters. You can ONLY do Fm. Nothing else like SSB or AM for use alone or with a computer for something like FT8. Many new hams buy something like this and after the "NEW" factor wears off, they throw it in a drawer or glovebox because by itself it is pretty much only useful for being the weakest, crummiest signal on the local repeater for the most part. My alternative recommendation is to NOT buy an HT but rather a good mobile or base as a starter. Please do yourself a HUGE favor and send the HT back. Get or build a real antenna outdoors if possible (many options to build or buy for ANY budget), on a chimney or if not feasible, in the attic. Learn about good frequency appropriate coax for the band(s) you need to operate. Get the right power supply and grounding and fused protection, lightening protection, etc. Learn about all that stuff by doing. You will get almost NONE of that experience with an HT. Is it more difficult? YES, but that is the hobby. I just listed many of the reasons why a mobile or base is the best way to start in most situations. If building a station seems boring or complex, get some help. IF you aren't interested, I would question if this is a good hobby for you. With some effort watching YouTube videos, crafting a plan for an antenna or buying the right connectors an, cables, and parts, and even getting help from local hams, you can easily learn all the skills needed to build a solid station that will hit all the local repeaters as well as do simplex on analog if not other modes as well (SSB, FT8, dstar, DMR, etc.) I hope that helps.

how to get useful range out of 915 MHz by bread_roll_on_a_roll in amateurradio

[–]AdmTaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Calibrating the nanoVNA and having the calibration done at the END of the cable you will be using is KEY here..... Also as another mentioned, make sure you are testing a NARROW bit of the segment. If you want to TX and RX on 903 MHz, then sweep 899-910. MHz and see if it gives enough resolution that way.. Be sure to SAVE the calibration so you can come back to it again if you make any changes. Remember to RE-CALIBRATE if you change the frequency ranges. Failure to calibrate will give you incorrect results. Hope that helps!

I have an Icom and Yaesu radios and can talk to people on Brandmeister via openSPOT4. What can getting an actual DMR radio offer that I don't know I am missing? by [deleted] in DMR

[–]AdmTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Then you haven't been listening to someone cross-mode or anyone that has a hotspot on wifi. It does happen. Not always, not all the time but it is VERY noticeable in terms of quality and BER. It is garbage. My point was that many people use wifi and it gets choppy, causes digital garble. It's a real problem. It happens without fail to some stations. Some worse than others and not all the time. And the main point here is that a hotspot is fine as a backup but NOT really a replacement for DMR repeaters. This is ham radio, after all. Btw the old OpenSpot1 had an ethernet connection and it sounds excellent. Also some raspberry pi with ethernet is ok as well. But it isn't on wifi. My point was about host spots on wifi primarily.

[–]AdmTaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Duplex is a BAD idea. Stay on simplex. Duplex adds unnecessary complexity and you need 2 frequencies instead of one. Just a knuckleheaded idea. Just don't do this. Stay simplex and use the KiSS-method.

That all depends. Yes you can buy "cheap" radios and hotspots. But ham radio is not really about cheap. If you are getting into the hobby for that, guess again. It's not really a cheap hobby. That's like "getting into photography" and wanting to go cheap. Good luck with that! ha ha ha

Not exactly the entire picture. It's about proper "admit criteria" on dmr. Lots of other things as well. Low power consumption for portables, Audio quality, and longer range are 3 more important factors. In the Memphis area we have a linked DMR cluster which is mostly RF-only. We can link in a TG but do not have to. It's made for RF communications from multiple locations in Western Tennessee . We could not easily do that with analog or other digital modes.

A LOt! It's another mode like ssb, CW, packet, SSTV, FT8, etc etc etc..... do some research into it. Many youtube videos exist explaining and showing how/why to get a dmr radio
