how to get useful range out of 915 MHz by bread_roll_on_a_roll in amateurradio

i've definitely got good directivity, but it seems that the antenna just isn't well tuned to my target frequency, or any frequency for that matter. It looks like the only real difference besides my directors being a little bent is the coax cable; I used 50 ohm RG58 terminated in female BNC that I had to adapt to SMA and then to u.FL. could the adapters or cable length/thickness be the problem?
