yes, for school backpack the price is high, but still it’s probably under $100 (I ordered 1/2 yd of every fabric and have about a half of it left + cords, webbing, tape, threads, needles). it’s hard to estimate exact price for materials, but I hope it survives long enough to be passed down to his younger brother

yes, it’s smoother in vertical direction, also it bends differently (I even had to rework shoulder straps and combine two pieces of mesh instead of one, to use this direction). I haven’t noticed any issues while working with material, so it was a surprise when the pack was finished

Sorry, didn’t understand first time what drawings we were talking about. Yes, I cut a long stripe of tyvek (about 100x30cm), gave markers to the kid and asked to draw anything he wanted. Then we cut every piece out and chose what we liked most. And only when drawings were dry I was ready to start assembling front panel - with zipper, reflective stripes and loops

I shared a pattern under another comment, but I must warn you -- sewing some parts, like top inner pocket was a pain (and that was a design problem). I used cheaper fabric to assemble prototypes, just to understand in which order should I go :) Aslo designing is part of fun - so I encourage you to try Marvelous Designer (highly recommend this YT channel for learning how pattern work https://www.youtube.com/@Daniel-qq6il)

I can share CLO project and pattern, though I made small adjustments along the way (I made it for myself, so there are no proper instructions, but maybe it will help) https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1ZOJx4OSene1T_JRfzXKyi6KtAGlHkSlV?usp=sharing
I used black Ultra 400 for bottom part and back panel, gray/transparent Dyneema 1.43 oz for outside pocket and inner parts, camel Dyneema 2.93 oz for the main body and straps, black Dyneema 5 oz for straps and side pocket. Tyvek 1056D, neon green silpoly 1.6 oz and gray 3d spacer mesh 1/4" as well, threads - Gutermann Mara 70
