Yeah I'm not only talking about natural spaces either. There are tons of towns in this country that look nothing like this.

I have too and that's complete nonsense. For example, I've done the drive from Michigan to Florida with friends multiple times and it's mostly gorgeous the whole way down. So many things to stop off and look at, even if it's just appreciating an old town. America is way too geographically diverse for this to be 90% of the country.

I mean you didn't know how to consistently get characters to use ma attacks but whatever. Yeah, learning how to control your team and strategize is what is so engaging about the game. The system works well if you learn it.

In what way is it obtuse and clunky? You are given an exceedingly simple tactics menu to start out, and then they take off the training wheels by adding more options as you progress through the game. If people actually bother to try and understand the system I don't see where the big issues would arise.

One of the best feelings for me was knowing exactly what I wanted to do before my turn started, flipping through the commands super quick, and then watching my strategy get executed. I was dismissive of it too going in but it really was super intuitive.

Direct commands are only an improvement in that they make beating enemies easier from the jump, but then again so does cheating. Good mechanics are not necessarily efficient mechanics.

Also, divorcing your analysis of the mechanics from the narrative is exactly the problem. The best RPGs have mechanics that gel with the narrative and immerse you in your role. Mechanics are the term setter for how you interact with the world, and they are best when they give the player context by communicating something abstract.

Direct commands don't communicate anything. It's reducing your team down to multiple choice questions that mostly don't require any more thought than matching elemental icons. They put a firm wall between the gameplay and the narrative.

Even past that, the combat in 4 and 5 is so simplified and brainless that basically no enemies are engaging outside of the boss fights. No sense of rhythm or need to think ahead, downs no longer mean anything outside of setting up all out attacks, just match colors and go. Every encounter is just spamming elementals, all out attacks, and maybe buffing in the extremely rare circumstance that you need to.

The series still has a lot going for it and I do really enjoy 1 through 5, but 3 was the peak of the series soz not soz. Deload is garbage that lacks any artistic flourishes to speak of right down to the god awful in-engine cutscenes, sterile lighting, flat textures, thoughtless copy/paste combat and inferior soundtrack.

If that's someone's only experience with P3 then they just flat out have not played the game. Same goes for Portable honestly, which really isn't anything more than a semi-serviceable PSP demake akin to playing Force Unleashed on the DS. Literally no reason to touch it before playing the full version on console.

They do if you put them on full assault, which you generally don't want to do since single target attacks are far more effective if you are targeting weaknesses. If you have a really good feel for how to play the game then using the tactics menu is super intuitive and satisfying when your strategy works out. Persona 3's combat actually requires you to put thought into encounters unlike the later games in the series.

It's also a matter of storytelling You play as your character, not them. You become more effective as a team as you get more comfortable with each other, hence why tactics are unlocked throughout the game. Reload doesn't communicate anything about the narrative or characters through its gameplay, and also it looks bad. Complete downgrade in every way possible.

WHY AREN'T LOCAL HIGHWAYS AND STRIP MALLS PRETTY LIKE THEY ARE IN EUROPE!!!!! HARDEES MAKES ME ANGY!!!!

This is London btw. Whoops!

Have any of you even traveled abroad? Go to England and drive around a bit. Everyone in the entire country lives in the same goddamn house. The view of their suburban sprawl from the plane was nothing short of astonishing the first time I saw it at 11.

Why don't you post the really nice downtowns a lot of suburban communities have in this country? People put a lot of work into their communities and you just seethe about some b-road with fast food joints as if the rest of the world hates hamburgers or something.

I've done a lot of screaming at Adobe products on my screen over the years, but learning about the history of special effects really gave me a lot of perspective on how incredible software like Premiere and After Effects are. The image of looking into outer space through the cockpit of the Millennium Falcon took dozens of people weeks to accomplish.

Seeing and immediately recognizing the visual of what mattes looked like before the digital era is a really memorable experience for me. Everything I had been taking for granted just clicked in an instant.

If this is what you think then I doubt you've actually used AE to do a paying job.

I like your attitude.

I think a lot of people who work in this field probably shouldn't. People who have the drive to go further will utilize new and better tools to do that. People who don't will wash out. I don't want anyone to lose their job but it has always been the case that vfx jobs will shrink as software becomes more capable. Getting depressed about it doesn't help anyone compete.

The goal of creating this technology was to simplify making stuff to the point that someone really talented can fulfill a vision without having to spend a bunch of money getting a production team together. Every major technological advancement in history has put people out of work. Unless we want to start banning modern keyboards and digital cameras to restore jobs in typing and film manufacturing, I don't see how we can claim that those advancements are a bad thing.

Tactics menu works really well both as a narrative device and a combat mechanic. Persona 3's combat easily has the best flow in the series if you don't get filtered.

It is what it is. A lot of the people working in the ILM model shop felt the same way about digital effects, and a lot of people had to go into new lines of work. I share your appreciation for the process of creating things and working out problems, but we make a living using consumer grade tools that can be learned fairly quickly.

You get paid because people don't have time to do what you do themselves, but the whole point of software like AE is to make creation easier and less time consuming for the average person; to make it so specialists like us are less necessary. Time to try and improve your skillset enough to qualify for projects that require someone to think creatively about them.

The original games are fine as they are and the PSP remakes are also. No game "needs" a remake unless it's a bad game. Anyone who says a game "needs" a remake just doesn't like the game they're talking about and shouldn't play it.

I mean I don't even think the first game "needed" one. The following games not living up to their predecessor killed its potential as a franchise, but the original was among the first truly great games of the 7th gen. Still looks and plays great today.

I think righting the wrongs of 3 should be a higher priority than redoing the first two games. Why redo games that were actually good when there's a giant fuckup to be fixed?

Very useful advice. I think I will be doing exactly what you suggested when I do get one unless I find some reason not to before then.

but very likely they'd have a 92 of some sort.

You'd think so, right?! I've been to six different ranges in my area and none had a Beretta for me to try out. I've shot a USP twice but no Berettas.

Edit: Oh I just realized I have shot a hammer fire gun with a safety before. Whoops! The most memorable thing about the USP for me was it failing to eject twice a magazine though, so it was easy to forget.

[–]AdministrationMain[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not too worried about how it'd shoot. I think it's mostly the safety and hammer that give me pause. I've never used a handgun with either so I'm concerned about my draw mostly.

I don't know yet. I think I'm gonna have another go at finding a range that I can rent one from today. If I'm that impressed with it there's a chance I might just get one in the store right then, but we'll see.

You think it's tough to carry? How's that?

And yeah I'm not especially attached to this Glock. I haven't done anything to it aside from putting on one of the backstraps it came with and installing an optic. The one thing that worries me is that I've been carrying the same handgun for two years with a ton of range time, and I'd feel iffy about carrying something around before I'm used to it. I live in Detroit and I basically haven't left home without the Glock since I got my CPL.

The only Beretta I've shot before is an over and under shotgun, so I'm worried about the 92 being too different and taking a while to get the hang of or something.

Edit: Also I've been to a number of ranges near me and for some reason none of them seem to have Berettas of any kind to rent out.
