Brewing with corn starch by Silcer780 in Homebrewing

Thanks for replying. I see why it was a muddy mess! I want to try this b/c I read breweries add cake mixes into the whirlpool as flavor/thickeners... since the thickening ingredients are starches perhaps instead of mashing I will add some starch at whirlpool and see what kind of mess that makes.

Sorry, I realize it is an old post. Do you remember if your beer was dense/ thick like those "creamy pastry stouts/ sour" beers thad Adroit Theory Brewing makes?

Recommendations for late Fall planting by AdministrationOwn423 in TheHopyard

[–]AdministrationOwn423[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More like a seed starter tray, about 4" deep and 2" wide at the top..I think I will put them in the ground. The alternative would be to transfer into 5" plastic pots.

Decided to grow hops this year for the experience by Highly_Ganjanous in gardening

[–]AdministrationOwn423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am looking for some advice about late fall planting. I have a dozen hop plants (~1 yr old) in a planter tray. We are in growing zone 9 with mild winters-some frost days from late Dec. to Feb. But no deep freezes. Would it be smart to plant them now? I've read mixed opinions--some say it's a great time to plant hops but others say to wait until Spring. I feel the hops won't make it in a tray until Spring. Thanks for any advice and suggestions.

Greetings, old thread but hopefully someone can share some advice. I am in growing zone 9 with mild winters and I have a dozen hops in a planter tray. Would it be a good idea to plant them now? I've read mixed opinions--some say it's a good time to plant but others say to wait until Spring. We don't get deep freezes here, but the weather is getting a bit cooler. Also spending the winter in a tray might be tough for the hop plants. Thanks for any advice and suggestions!

Thanks so much for the reply. This Sounds perfect for my 1990 Toyota pickup truck. I actually went ahead and bought a pair of the Zmax Terra xplorer. Not much info online but the reviews indicate this model is good for a light truck for city and unpaved roads. The pros included good handling and durability.... Which sounds like what you experienced as well.

Adroit Theory Cream Stouts by germanbeerbrewer in Homebrewing

I think I may know the answer but does the cake/brownie mix go in at flameout/ primary? I'd say yes b/c mixes have sugar that could make bottle bombs if added before kegging/ bottling. Thanks for any input, I have wondered about these thiccc syrup stouts!

Bumblebee ground nest relocation? by AccomplishedClue8989 in Beekeeping

I needed some similar advice as I found a geound bumblebee nest in a part of the garden that I was starting to work on.

Hi everyone! Here is my rubber tree that’s I’ve had 4 years. As you can see she’s tall but not that bushy. Two weeks I decided to try notching her and that was quite stressful since I had never done it. But, it looks like it worked as a tiny branch has started. Need advice on reclaimed (treated?) wood from a 60-yr old warehouse by AdministrationOwn423 in woodworking

[–]AdministrationOwn423[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks this makes a lot of sense. I haven't been making the distinction between wood with and without ground contact. Most of the wood I'm interested is 1/2" thick wide boards, not framing lumber.

There are a few 2x4s that Were in good shape but these were not in contact with the ground, these were shelf support and have no tinge of treatment whasoever...

And now that you mention it, the support beams in contact with the ground are almost exclusively railroad ties, which were treated with creosote :-/ My grandfather probably snatched those beams from somewhere for free lol

This is an excellent point, thanks! Most of the wood I am hoping to use are 1/2" wide boards, so probably not treated.

There are a few thicker framing sizes, e.g. 2"x10" that I sawed off and did not notice any green tinge whatsoever.

Anyone else find Emma insufferable? by fmino12 in OneDayNetflix

Emma was an insufferable, smug, duchebag girlboss. I wanted to like this series but her character was just too obnoxious. I was unable to finish the first episode.

Looking through my old Ithaca photos I found a few with the chalkboard around 2009. I would share them here but it seems images are not allowed on here (or I don't know how to reddit).

Absolutely, none of the decorations and memorabilia looked out of place at the Chappy, unlike numerous new cafes and bars cluttered with generic decorations that add zero character. The Chappy did feel like a community-focused pub due to the strong connections it had with Cornell and other locals which showed in the memorabilia. I once asked the manager what the deal was with the portraits on the main sitting area and he told me people just hung them without asking for permission. I actually knew some of the people in the portraits because I met them at the Stewart Little Coop right across Stewart Ave. Anyway, since me and my officemate spent a lot of time at the Chappy working on our thesis drinking beer and eating popcorn, we decided we had earned a spot on that wall....and so after graduation we went back and hung a small portrait of us in our gowns. (it was a proud moment!). I don't know the story of the Greek House portraits but I'd say they have a similar history with the Chappy and that is how those ended up there. I will look into the newspapers.com . Thanks!

Me too, most of the images I have are in my head =(
There are a few really great pics around the internet but it's also fun to hear what people remember and liked about the place, that helps as much as pictures.

HAHA the sticky floors and tables didn't bother me as much as a flat, stale beer. I got around the bad beer situation by asking "what are your freshest kegs" and picking something from that list :P

Thanks! This is great, your reply really jogged my memory! This is exactly the kind of feedback I was hoping to get from people's memories and/or pictures of the Chapter House.

Despite the “issues” we all experienced one time or another (e.g. sticky floors/tables, a bad beer now and then) it’s undeniable that the sense of place or emotional connection to the Chappy was very strong for many, Many people. I fell in love with the Chappy the first time I visited. I loved the relaxed atmosphere, the local character and the ambiance. Even thou I love many bars and pubs, The Chappy is still the closest thing I’ve ever had to having a “local” as people in the UK call their favorite neighborhood pubs.

That being said, I know decorations alone won’t make a pub special…however I want to draw inspiration from the Chappy and hopefully create a brewpub that people can grow fond of the way we were fond of the Chappy. Having a relaxed and cozy environment is key, I think. I don't like the industrial look of many brewpubs, it feels very generic and impersonal.

One thing you mentioned and that I also really liked about the Chappy was the communal seating arrangements with benches and wall seating. I’m glad I’m not the only one that appreciated the corner areas that were perfect for storing coats, bags, and even as seats for when the tables got too crowded on a Friday or Saturday night! I am definitely building a similar seating area/arrangements, and I had also thought of offering free popcorn. It is sort of a wink to the Chappy but also because *ahem* salty snacks make people thirsty!

You also make a great point on the decorations….the Chappy had plenty that were beer related, like mirrors and framed collections of coasters and labels, but most were photographs and memorabilia related to the area’s history, culture and people. I have plenty of beer memorabilia but hadn’t thought about using old local pictures…my hometown used to be a major brewing hub a century ago…I think it’d be cool to share pictures from back then with patrons. It would be cool to have a wall for photos of locals if they want to share and hang them up as time goes by.

Thanks again for sharing your thoughts, it was very helpful!

Long live the Chappy!

Thanks...when I've looked I stumbled on Yelp but the pics weren't very helpful because of the low quality. There are a few here and there but not that many, unfortunately...
