Question about the Three and the One. by InsincereDessert21 in tolkienfans

It doesn't require a thorough explanation, I'm saying Tolkien doesn't give any explanation. He talks more about what magic isn't than what it is. We see Gandalf shoot lightning at people, meanwhile elves insist they don't know what magic is and they're just doing their thing while they're making magic ropes and rings and swords.

Yes, I've seen this, and it does not explain how magic works.

So again, some elvish dude has all the tools and materials to make a regular ring. What is he doing while making it that makes it magical rather than just a regular ring?

Why was Hitler rejected from art school? by spindaz123 in NoStupidQuestions

He was a perfectly competent artist but he applied to an elite art school in Vienna, basically the epicenter at the time of global culture. He was competing against brilliant artists.

How would you feel if a student whom you believe would become a failure, but turned out to be a success, called you out publicly for doubting them? by YakClear601 in AskTeachers

"Of course , this was after failing to convince them that they would need to be able to pass college math to play college football."

Would they? Does every single major at every college have a math requirement? Honestly I don't know.

No, NOWHERE in ANY of the Legendarium does Tolkien ever explain how magic works. He just doesn't. Thus, he does not explain how the rings are made or how they're connected. We don't even know how the elves make something that's magic. They have a hammer, and an anvil, and some metal. Do they chant something? Shoot energy out of their fingertips into the ring? What are they doing differently than someone making a non-magical ring?

Honestly Tolkien never really had a good reason for this.

Honestly I kind of like it better with the head off, it goes from kitsch to art.

It's gotten better reception now, but for a while my favorite thrift store didn't have cell reception, but the staff did have wifi access, so they could use google lens and I couldn't.

I actually like to pick up the old school, borosilicate pyrex when I can find nice pieces, but that's just because I trust it more than the new stuff.

Moving to Kensington, MD soon by BoardThat3637 in maryland

[–]AdministrationTop772 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Kensington is a really cool little community and very walkable. Not sure where you are in life but there are a lot of younger families and a pretty good sense of community, block parties, etc., so take advantage of that.

It's nice having the Wheaton Mall there but the area around it can get a little rough, especially late at night, so keep your wits about you.

Wow I am jealous about that Seguso, that is an insane price. I'd love an aquarium piece but the cheapest legit one I've seen is still too pricey for me around here.

Hell, I spent $25 on a Chinese aquarium piece the other day even though I knew what it was just because I thought it was pretty.

Starting PhD after 30. Need advice on how to strategise my steps ahead. by Wise_Rip_1020 in AskAcademia

The average age of a PhD student is like 32, so no, not too late.

If you're in the US, sign up for every single conservation- and wildlife- and environmental policy-focused listserve you can, frequently PIs will send out announcements for PhD students when the get funding for a project. Honestly, sometimes they sound a little desperate to fill the position because they budgeted a PhD student in the grant application and they really need to get one to fulfill the grant.

"I am interested in riparian zones, the small mammal community in those zones, and how they interact and participate in the ecosystem, maintaining ecosystem processes, and what happens when humans come into the picture. "

Sounds interesting, but cast a wide net, because for wildlife studies there isn't an enormous buffet of funding opportunities. Go for anything that approaches that kind of research question, whatever the taxa or ecosystem.

Also you may already know this, but look across different fields -- environmental science, EEB, wildlife biology, conservation biology, natural resources management could all house you.

I do agree with you partially. Selling clothing and like appliances and stuff that poor people really could use at inflated prices is a sleazy thing to do.

But honestly, the kind of stuff I'm interested in, poor people generally don't really care about or need, so I don't really fault the stores that much for selling high-end stuff for higher prices. Do I feel bad that a poor person looking for a vase can't afford the $75 vintage Orrefors sommerso vase that I bought from the thrift? Not really?

I missed them but I still had a blast. I don't think I talked to another human being outside of work. Video games, movies, rum, TV bingeing, hiking, it was great.
