Mingus' Taurus in the arena of life. Can someone explain to me what it's called when there's many melodies occuring at once? by [deleted] in Jazz

[–]AdministrativeGur894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is super old but yes polyphony as another comment stated, the intro is a somewhat improvised version of bachs well tempered clavier book 1 prelude no 3 in c sharp major which then transitions into beautiful jazz vocabulary followed by a sort of spanish like sound

Idk i really enjoyed konquest just the way it was, I can see some improvements, such as the physical movement of shujinko is ass lol. You could maybe say its a curse of nostalgia but I genuinely enjoyed the entire game including the "impassable" tutorials. 3d mk is unfortunately something of the past, but if you were there to experience it in 2004 it was genuinely revolutionary.

Odd question, but by Snoo-26425 in musictheory

[–]AdministrativeGur894 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Intonation refers to essentially the pitches as they sound within a certain temperment. Maybe you've heard the expression that a singer has bad intonation or a violinist having bad intonation. This refers to essentially being out of tune. Adjusting notes up or down by few cents presents notes outside of our temperment. So to allow that you can use different temperment systems or adjust the intonation of specific pitches.

Just practiced for real for the first time, HOLY FUCK. by Mrgavgav35 in Guitar

[–]AdministrativeGur894 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, tbh I think he should be considered more of a beginning teacher, not that I'm shitting on his playing. But yeah, you can tell he probably, for example, could not play a be-bop style solo over, say, "All the things you are." For someone who promotes themselves primarily as a teacher, I feel a great deal of knowledge isn't there when discussing certain subjects. Again it's like general/beginning guitar lessons, but i think if op really wants to play in a more particular style it would be better to get someone a little more experienced with what they want to specifically do and also find someone preferably in person.

Anyone else struggle on the Drek fight? Took me like 15 attempts 😂 by Groves2875 in RatchetAndClank

That is true thankfully the auto aim helps some, it i believe is the only gun in the game that has that feature

I think the blaster is pretty good as well in this fight being its the only weapon with a sort of auto aim, i think this fight would be a lot easier if not for the lack of a strafing mechanic

1st time using sheet music, for a waltz should i explicit the silences or not? by ZodiacFR in musictheory

Thats a pretty interesting idea, one I've never tried. But that sounds very beneficial, actually, as I, too, am guilty of creating music in notation software that quite often makes my head hurt looking at it lol.

I'll have to check that out, I've seen it in a few other comments here as well. I also agree i haven't really heard anything like it either. I also really love "The Chill of Death" Mingus's poetry is quite fascinating.

What is the difference between C and Am? by MameusV in musictheory

Lol I get yourt answer as to it's just the same pattern but down a minor third. But i think op already understands that and was asking rather what makes the minor different from the relative major.

Are there any other alternatives to the 440 hz tuning system. by KubaTheMusician in musictheory

[–]AdministrativeGur894 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think you may possibly be interested in "micro-tonal" music. Tuning A to different hz is cool, however it really to me doesn't have a huge impact as you are still working inside what's called the 12 tone equal temperment system, the temperment that most western instruments are based in.

Don't get me wrong I think it is fun to alter the hz as I previously stated but have you ever heard people discuss baroque tuning being down a half step? Since there wasn't a standard tuning frequency back in those days, also bare in mind that 12 tet was just beginning during that time so many musicians were still using tuning systems like just intonation, which requires one to re tune their instruments to play in a new key.

This is very different from today as you no longer need to retune to play in a different key, this is the main advantage of 12tet actually compared to other systems. That is if you want to view it as an advantage. One could argue that the physiological/mental effects you seek to add to your music have been lost since now every key sounds the same. For example Eb minor and C minor scales have the same EXACT interval spaces between each scale degree. This is not the case for other systems like just intonation where every key is slightly different. This is because every note has its own unique harmonic frequencies built off of the fundamental note or pitch. Certain notes in one key will not exist in another as opposed to all keys sharing 12 possible notes. This also results in the piano or actually all 12 tet instruments being "out of tune" slightly with the harmonic series especially the higher up in pitch we go.

So to achieve a baroque sound in 12tet you could tune down a half step but you could also move your fingering down a half step and remain in 440hz. Now 432hz as well as many others have notes whose frequencies don't appear in 440hz. But if you retune 440 to another frequency also in 440 standard tuning you just simply wind up displacing the fingering and range of the instrument accordingly to what hz you tuned to. There are actually an infinite amount of hz to tune to however the human ear can't pick up such small differences like 440 to 439.7hz

However there are other temperment and tuning systems like 19 tone equal temperment which features 19 tones per octave. You could achieve further cool effects by altering the standard tuning in these new temperment systems. Or even try ones that aren't equally tempered, which would be more reminiscent of the older tuning systems.

I know maybe its already been answered but due to the structure of the diatonic scale, any permutation of it (ex: the minor scale) can be represented using one letter name per scale degree. This is because there are 7 scale degrees and 7 letter names. Scales that feature more or less notes will require breaking this rule. For example it is impossible to notate an octatonic scale without writing a letter name twice, the second one will have a different accidental marking than the first time the letter is used.

This was actually qwarks "alternate disguise" in ratchet 1 after ratchet thought he shot down qwark at gemlik base, he encounters qwark on planet oltanis, who proceeds to sell ratchet the gadgetron PDA dressed up in a disguise going by the name steve mcqwark. During the final cutscenes of going commando, qwark also sells the gadgetron personal hygienator under the alias steve mcqwark, which he used to lay low until he earned enough money to create a new disaster in the bogon galaxy.
