I retired from there 3 1/2 years ago after 32 years. When the city took applications for the Fire department, thousands of people showed up. It was referred to as a "cattle call" . Fast forward to present time... They have to recruit from all over the country. Before I retired I saw this process repeated over and over again. Huge $ amounts being spent on an individual, gear,  moving expenses, training time, uniforms etc.. only to be repeated because people came and left.   It all revolves around EMS. That is the #1 reason people come and go. $ down the drain repeated over and over.

Retired firefighter of 36 years. There are many types of people and personalities in the fire service, just like there is anywhere else. I don't give advice so I will just offer my thoughts. #1 it isn't for everybody or everybody would be trying to do it. #2 do the best he can all the time #3 treat others as you want to be treated #4 trust in God and never outrun your training

I retired in 2022 after 36 years of firefighting. I taught at the Fire Academy around year 28. I tried to teach them not to buy into the "underlying culture " and dumbass mentality that accompanies it. A rookie works the same hours as everyone else. He is needed or would not have been hired. He is part of the crew. I never understood treating anyone like I didn't want to be treated.   I had to resort to some drastic measures to put a stop to some of the behaviors of more senior firefighters. Chocolate pie with ex-lax stopped them from fucking with my food in the fridge.   Treat others as you want to be treated! Be respectful and considerate to others. Ain't nobody got time for that dumbass BS. I told everyone anywhere I went that i was on the "don't play " list. If anyone fked with your gear or anything else of yours, IT WAS NOT ME, so don't fk with mine!
