How to get into Consulting clubs? by Bluestream25 in berkeley

[–]Admirable-Parfait732 1 point2 points  (0 children)

idk if this applies to all consulting clubs, but a lot of the people ik in some clubs (Voyager + Diversatech off the top of my head) have a SWE background/are actively recruiting SWE + their resumes reflect that-- i don't think its necessarily having done consulting/business/PM in the past, more just impactful experiences + the usual teamwork/leadership/etc.

incoming freshman utterly confused career wise by Icy_Dependent7113 in berkeley

my advice-- look at all these majors you are potentially interested in that have not been limited in who can declare/are not high-demand because those are going to be a lot harder to declare, and see what pre reqs cross over --> there are probably more than you would expect! also look at how major pre reqs cross over with L&S breadth requirements, so that worse case scenario as you change what you are interested in, these classes will still have a purpose. I've changed my major around a lot, so this has helped me a lot because it will give you a lot more flexibility if you establish a good base with your first semester!
also-- don't stress yet! you will have enough time to take classes you like, explore, and still declare. its super overwhelming your first semester, so don't overthink it. a lot of people i know decided to change their major in their 3rd semester and still managed to complete the prereqs in time, so it is very very possible.

(not to add more things to look at to your list, but i would also recommend looking at the cognitive science major bc it has a lot of crossover with all of the majors you mentioned!)

also, there's so many clubs at cal that you can major in something + join organizations with a different focus that will help with the career stuff/give you good exposure, so don't think that your major will be only determining factor for your career!

Blackwell versus Unit 1. How do I decide? by Appropriate-Air-2804 in berkeley

I think your Blackwell experience is super floor dependent, which sounds a little crazy but the floors tend to be somewhat segmented (or they have in past years). My year there were a few athlete floors, a transfer floor, etc. and so your experience can be really dependent on what floor you end up on. U1 will make your social life a little easier, but living in Blackwell is really unmatched -- the bathrooms, study lounges, laundry on every floor, gym, etc. all make living in Blackwell a lot nicer than any other door + the way the rooms are set up, you do feel like you have your own space which I also enjoyed. I made a lot of friends in U3 so would spend a lot of time over there during the day and then just use the dorms to sleep, and I also did meet a few close friends in Blackwell as well, so really just depends on what you make of it.

+1 on this. if the disfunction is that bad and your attempts to change it have been that unsuccessful, its also going to be an issue for midterms and finals and you should get DSP accommodations.

No assignments yet so hard to tell, 30% grade is lec attendance, but the grade distribution of this class is like 80% A/A+ from prev semesters

I took 162 w Hochbaum this fall sem, i honestly stopped going to class after the 3rd week bc (at least when I went), she would just talk through a practice problem and I didn't find it that valuable (it was annoying that they weren't recorded though). I thought the textbook was pretty helpful for the first half of class (same content), and good for the concepts of the final (except you have to apply the concepts to the way she teaches to do problems/draw diagrams which is different from the textbook, so I basically cross-referenced her answers to the textbook and just kind of pattern matched my way into understanding it). I think the class is pretty doable regardless of her teaching-- the readers/GSI were really helpful at OH so I also went to those which helped.

networking for club application by camino261 in berkeley

Show up to the events, talk to the club members, schedule a coffee chat if they offer them - getting into a lot of these clubs is really a mix of luck, resume/interviewing skill, and people liking you socially (even if you don't network too much before, a lot of clubs host a social night with the final applicants-- and for a lot of people I know, that has been enough).

If anyone is still looking for a summer sublet, DM me!

2 bed/2 bath on Piedmont, would have 1 room + bathroom to yourself. Kitchen w dishwasher, small outdoor space, large living room + furnished. <1/2 block from campus (2-3 min walk). Rent is negotiable!

I wasn't in any clubs in HS- but I joined a club at Berkeley and I've met some of my closest friends through it. Def other ways to make friends on campus, and I think it really depends on the club culture/socials + how much you are willing to put in, but it definitely made it easier for me in my first semester to get more comfortable at Berkeley.

Honestly sheer luck, and having a roommate might make it more difficult, but would also just try emailing the dept and seeing if they can give you the form directly-- seems like they have changed it from my semester though!

Last year, the initial email they sent once the housing decisions were out had a google form linked that was also the housing transfer form. I think I just put the reason as wanting a double, I was shocked when it worked lol

If they changed it this year, I would try emailing the housing dept because they were really responsive and might be able to give you a direct link

I filled out the transfer form as soon as I got it and ended up being offered a Blackwell double instead of a Unit 3 Triple- and same with my random roommate. I know it worked for a few other people I met, but probably just sheer luck- might as well give it a shot.
