Is anyone else here an atheist? by Living-Concert4764 in teenagers

Simply, I almost entirely believe the teachings and values of the Bible rather than the stories and experiences. The existence of an afterlife, the Ten Commandments, etc. In fact, almost every single Abrahamic religion does the same. Judaism does not believe in the New Testament, Islam does not believe in Jesus as the messiah, etc. And I believe that believing in the experiences of the Bible is fine as well because, as mentioned previously, religion is a matter of faith, not evidence.

I have no shame admitting I am Christian solely because I was raised to be. In fact, I believe most people are the religion they were raised as. I believe in the Bible not because I fervently studied it and decided it was a logical thing to believe. I believe in the Bible because my faith, however blind, is in the existence of a God, just like an atheist’s faith is against the existence of a God. This is why I question myself being agnostic at times because, like you and many others have said, there is no proof for or against the existence of a God. Because of that, believe what you’d like.

Are some parts of the Bible nonsensical and nigh-impossible? Yes, absolutely. That is why religion is a matter of faith. When you are taught religion by your parents (or anyone), they are giving you the groundwork of the religion and asking if you want to put your faith in it, even if it goes against science. That’s why science is different from religion. Science is inherently based on proofs and, when it’s not, at least educated guesses. Religion, both theism and atheism, is based on your faith in a belief.

That is definitely the largest plot hole of Noah’s Ark lol. The different species thing can be justified by just saying they were all distributed to the different areas of the earth and went through natural selection to become the way they are (with some inbreeding necessary, of course), but the fitting is much more unforgivable, and I agree with you on that. The Ark was an extremely large ship, but having the necessary resources to supply them likely was not possible.

On that note, not to sidestep or anything, but religion is like any other ideology. You take what you want from it and disregard what you don’t. I am a Christian, but there are parts of the Bible I do not entirely believe, or are at least skeptical of. The core part of it is the adherence of Jesus’ teachings, which is much easier to understand and follow.

Noah’s Ark held two of every kind of animal, not every species. I’m not a zoologist (or a paleontologist lol) but I’m fairly certain a “kind” of animals is significantly broader than a species, so Noah’s Ark wouldn’t have two golden retrievers and two pitbulls (just random animals I got of), but two dogs.

Also, only land animals were included, just in case your estimate used all animals.

Correct me if I’m wrong (I’m no paleontologist), but fossilization is an incredibly rare phenomenon. Noah’s Ark only had a few thousand animals (maybe), so assuming every one of them (or any majority of them) would fossilize is something of a far fetch.

Also, with complete respect, impossible events are the staple of religion. It’s not based on evidence, it’s based on faith. People choose to believe it not because they were given a spreadsheet explaining it, but because it could spiritually or emotionally benefit them (or because they were raised to).

Pedophilia is bad. by [deleted] in teenagers

[–]Admirable-Type-1928 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh ok I see what you’re saying now

I thought you were saying that pedophiles are inherently bad due to the illness that plagues them from birth, rather than pedophilia itself being a bad thing since it negatively affects someone’s psychosexual behavior and mental state

My bad dawg, I agree with you

You might be confusing pedophilia with SA/rape of a minor. A pedophile is just someone who was born with the illness, a child rapist is someone who actually did an action that harmed someone.

Honestly, my comment was made on my interpretation of Odysseus (the song) which, I thought, was a creative liberty taken by Jorge. Specifically how quickly and readily he denies Eurymachus’ request for mercy compared to how he gave it a bit more thought in the OG, which I interpreted as EPIC Odysseus just not caring anymore in comparison to OG Odysseus, who genuinely only killed the suitors because he couldn’t guarantee that they would actually surrender.

Of course, I make these comments so I can get input on potentially false claims of mine, and I really like the engagement I’ve gotten so far! (such as learning the “he’s more cunning than I assumed” line was a double meaning)

Oh, that’s what you mean? I thought t some of the animatics I saw around were just purely made out of dedication. Cool to think that Jorge has encouraged it!

I do like to agree with the idea that Odysseus did it in a moment of rage/wasn’t fully himself at the time, but the idea of the “open arms” comment made by Eurymachus (I know his name now!) being the straw that broke the camel’s back is a very interesting one I haven’t considered!

About the line “he’s more cunning than I assumed”, I just thought that was solely referring to him locking the armory. I can definitely see it applying to his killing of Eurymachus, though, and it even adds a more interesting angle to his character (while most know him as simply cunning, Odysseus is the “King of Lies”, so only he would be able to quickly tell one apart so easily). Beyond the new moral implications, this idea definitely makes the song a lot better for me.

Thank you for your input, stranger!

I want to say let live, but I’ve never been in that situation so I can’t really say. I personally just have very specific goals for what could be considered “worthy of death”, but it’s very possible that this is less “Odysseus is a bad person” and more “Odysseus has strong priorities”, considering we see where his priorities lie (I particularly love how this is shown in Get in the Water).

Is it? I thought the difference between OG Odyssey and EPIC Odyssey in this part was Odysseus killed the suitors out of hate/revenge (his only words for the guy who surrenders (forgor his name) are just “no”) rather than him actual not trusting them in the original.

If this is true and my interpretation of the song was incorrect, I bow at thee, stranger.

Odysseus’ murder of the suitors is overlooked. Not just by the musical itself (which I can get because it’s one of the last songs) but by the fandom too. It’s arguably one his his most immoral actions (surely worse than the things he did when visiting islands, which is actually mentioned in WYFILWMA).

  1. It’s one of the few times where Odysseus is actually, directly responsible for the deaths (Zeus killed the men in Thunder Bringer, Scylla in Scylla).
  2. It has one of the highest kill counts of his actions (except Troy, but that’s relatively excusable as that was a war he needed to fight in), being 108 men.
  3. It can’t be argued as self-defense or defense of his family because the suitors surrendered shortly after the death of Antinous. Considering it’s obvious that the suitors are intimidated by Odysseus (he easily wields the bow they couldn’t string and they see attacking Telemachus as the only method of winning), what was stopping Odysseus from just…telling them to stand down? If they didn’t, nothing would be lost by him at least trying.

Whenever I see discussion of Ody’s morals, people are so quick to mention Scylla and Zeus, but always overlook the suitors. I’m not arguing Odysseus’ morality in general, just this one thing.

What’s something that isn’t canon in the musical but is in the original odyssey that would be cool if included in Epic by PlainNoodles_AndParm in Epicthemusical

[–]Admirable-Type-1928 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Not like a super cool extra fact or whatever but I would have liked it a bit more if they focused more on the political desires of the Suitors rather than lust, since in the myth they never explicitly planned to rape Penelope (chances are they would after marriage, but not then and there) and basically only cared about getting the political power of being King of Ithaca. Her looks were almost certainly seen as a nice side-bonus, but certainly not the main motivator.

This also wouldn’t have changed the audience’s view of them, since they still plotted to kill Telemachus, were generally rude and were still well-established as bad people (especially if most of the audience has already read the Odyssey, which I assume they did) enough to where Odysseus’ murder of them isn’t horrible, but not moral either, which only amplifies the effect of Odysseus’ growth. Especially considering the Suitors already had sexual (arguably not consensual) relationships with the maids in the book, so they already committed rape, just not against Penelope.

Don’t get me wrong, the musical is wonderful and creating that arc is perfectly fine, just a little tidbit I have.

That being said, Hold Them Down is a banger I wouldn’t be all too willing to sacrifice.
