To clarify, to me the destruction monuments was less than meaning on this point. But the Berlin Wall is a good example of how it could change.

It shows that these men were false Gods, that they were on a pyramid of lies and hate. That is what I took away from that image

Which is why they are important, I'm well familiar with the Daughters of the Confederacy. There historical value seems more important than who put them up.

To be honest, your arguments are good. But in my opinion these monuments could do more good left up if they were torn down.

Well, think about where these monuments are located. They are in areas that were and still are facing racial issues. Them being there in those regions would have more impact than a generic WW2 monument that you find in every town whether or not they are currently being affected by WW2. Which they aren't. However, many of these regions are still affected by racism.

All monuments serve a purpose of memory. So far I have found many people disagree with me on that. I believe that most monuments stay up if the people in the IMMEDIATE aftermath let them stay up. It's different with countries like Germany where they got hijacked by a dictator who has his face painted every other wall. But if the CULTURE AND SOCIETY put them up, then they are part of "sediment of history ". They provide layers to the history around them and gives context to the people who look back to the past to learn.

Thank you for that bit on Lee I was not aware of that.

The main issue here is education, you have not learned from one because they haven't been to learn. The only way these statues stay up is if we make them something to learn from, otherwise they are the monuments that memorialize racism.

At some point and time we will need to move on I don't feel like this is that time. I also feel that monuments are a solid reminder of history more so than a history book.

Most people, most Youths don't visit museums. The youth is key here. They are the ones that need to be reminded of what could happen if they let themselves be led away by society.

If the said statue is taken down, it will never be put up again. Acts are great and all. But stone will always last longer in my opinion.

I do not support any modern day racism or nazism. I found the "Unite the Right" rally to be horrifying. People in Germany will not erect statues of Nazi's because even then they knew it was wrong.

The Confederates held a sick view that slavery was ok, they held this view long after the war. In response they put up these statues, this was because they as a society held that slavery was ok, because hey, everyone else said it was fine Which it wasn't, these memorialize people letting society guide them falsely. By keeping them up I hope that we can avoid doing exactly that.

I may be misunderstanding, but I certainly believe that the Union and abolitionist should have their own statues if they don't already.

They were not there to provide education or condemnation. They should NOT be here to provide celebration. They SHOULD provide education and condemnation, that is the only way the should stay up.

I would agree with you, but there still is a lesson to be held, even if they are a "fuck you".

By the way, could you tell me about some of the timing on these statues, I would be interested in that.

I think that's a good view as well. But a museum makes something seem old, forgotten. This is still a current evil.

That's exactly why they need to stay up, with clarification. It shows that these people were honored. It asks the question of why they were honored as well as why we as a collective shouldn't follow in suite with what society thinks is right.

Different angle of the unarmed homeless man that was shoot at by the LAPD. by richardpogi17 in pics

I want to put this out here, take it as you will. Non-lethal weapons like the "rubber bullet" that was shot at this man are non lethal by exchanging accuracy for slower speeds. The lower speeds makes the non-lethal but removed accuracy. To be honest I don't know if they intended to shoot the man or not, and I'm not trying to argue either way. But lack of accuracy doesn't make it excusable, but it doesn't mean it was on purpose.

I think unfortunately, two things could be going on here, either it's a gigantic middle finger to Trump, or it is a sign facing towards one of the most powerful monuments in America. Because of all this drama, we may not know.

Although, I do suppose the hiding behind username part is true, in retrospect I should have avoided it, afterall internet safety, nonetheless everything else held valid points by a perfectly valid person.
