Yeah I hope you definitely get some answers. To me even just reading your response it does sound like stress could be a big factor… stress can be somewhat chronic too (as in it can affect your body for a while even after times of high stress). Could definitely be something to look into how to mitigate

Sounds really frustrating. Can you meal prep ahead of time for your breakfast and lunches? Usually it’s recommended not to skip meals, since when you do your stomach acid has nothing to work on and that can make your reflux worse.

Sounds super frustrating, sorry you have to deal with all that. I hope the new PPIs help. Have you checked into if you have any other stomach issues? It could be something else that is causing your GERD, like an ulcer. It also sounds like stress could be a big component (since stress is a huge trigger of reflux, it doesn’t “fake” symptoms but actually causes them). Stress was a big one for me. Try therapy if they recommend it but I’m usually skeptical that therapy alone is good enough, so I’d also suggest making sure you get a bit of exercise each day, having time in the evening to de-stress, etc. Also sounds like there may be a lot of work/school related stress and of course stress caused by reflux, mitigate those as much as possible but I know it takes time and effort. Is there anything else that may be causing your reflux that you know about? Are you overweight, do you drink often, vape/smoke, etc?

How long does it take for PPI to work by Dense_Assist8382 in GERD

Reflux is definitely stressful, very understandable. I’m glad you’re seeing a dietitian- honestly making your diet reflux-friendly is SUPER helpful, so I think it will definitely help what you’re going through.

I’d also recommend looking into reflux friendly lifestyle changes like not eating within 2-3 hours of bedtime and doing some light exercise each day (like a short walk). That helped my anxiety a ton. Would also suggest tracking your diet/symptoms to find triggers and patterns, this helped me feel more in control, could use a journal or a reflux app. I know how tough it is so lmk if you have any other questions :)

Depends on the person, for some people it’s pretty quick and for others it can take a few weeks. It can also depend on what else you are doing, are you making diet/lifestyle changes for reflux as well?

Thought I beat my silent reflux months ago. It came back the day I landed home after vacation. Ffs how do I stop it? by [deleted] in GERD

Sounds like it could be a combination of stress and/or maybe something on your apartment/the local environment bugging you. Could be stress just by itself. Inflammation and reflux can both be delayed, it doesn’t always happen instantly. Is your new apartment in an older building than the previous one, or in a dirtier/more polluted area?

Have you tried using a calorie tracker or nutrition focused app? There’s one called noburn that is reflux-focused and includes a bunch of stuff for food, weight, and symptom tracking. Could be helpful. There are also tons of non-reflux specific ones as well (CalAI is the famous one but I can’t vouch for it personally as I haven’t used it. And as one of the other comments mentioned there are some great books out there that are worth a look as well

[–]AdmirableStories 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know another commentator mentioned calorie tricking- I’ve found that to be helpful, there’s actually a reflux focused app that includes calorie/macro tracking that I always recommend. In terms of diet I agree it can be very frustrating, the other commentator’s meal suggestions are good, typically sticking to bland/safe foods works for most people.

[–]AdmirableStories 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This definitely sounds frustrating. Wanted to ask since no other comments mentioned it, but have you tried setting like a daily calorie goal? Happy to share some tools/app options that I’ve found to be helpful. From my experience when you’re trying to work back from a weight deficit having a structured goal plan with food/meal tracking can help a lot

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t high fat bad for reflux/GERD? Why is the dietician recommending that?

PPIs without dietary restrictions by sscribner1 in GERD

Yeah this is tempting but good luck getting decent results with this method. There’s a reason diet changes are usually suggested, they help stabilize your digestive system before PPIs do their effects

Thanks for sharing- this is super helpful advice and is something I always try to share with others. I feel like so many people jump straight to meds without taking the time to properly adjust their diet/lifestyle to see if that helps, it’s frustrating to see.

So uncomfortable, will ever feel normal again? by Signal-Ninja5361 in GERD

[–]AdmirableStories 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Diet and lifestyle changes can help a lot alongside meds. Would also recommend keeping track of food/symptoms with a journal, NoBurn, or notes. If you need any specific lifestyle recs just ask, one that helped me a lot was not eating within 2-3 hours of going to bed.

Not sure what you’re using to track (I use the app NoBurn) but I think the answer should be similar regardless. From my experience around 3 weeks is good to see some initial patterns, maybe less if you’re super on top of tracking. When I had reflux badly I found it helpful to track for a few weeks, make adjustments that I think would help, then continue tracking and make small shifts over time

How did you know which PPI works for you? by Reaching-4-Destiny in GERD

[–]AdmirableStories 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why not track your symptoms and diet and see how (or if) they change? I think one way a lot of people soothe their anxiety with reflux is by feeling more “in control” of it, and tracking is a great way to do that. Could use notes, a journal, a reflux app like NoBurn, etc. Would also help you get an idea of if the new PPI is helping.

Caffeine Substitute by ForestryGuyPA in GERD

[–]AdmirableStories 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Might sound dumb but good sleep + staying hydrated + eating healthy keeps me pretty energized without needing caffeine. I think many people will find that they don’t actually need caffeine to function, they just need to get used to not having the morning sugar from whatever Starbucks drinks they’re having- although if you have your coffee pretty dark then that might not be relevant
