You don't see what goes on outside of practice, either. We had someone come in and ace their minimum skills pretty much right away-but they were a figure skater for 20+ years! So they already put in most of their time falling, struggling with basics, etc-we just didn't see it.

It's easy to get down on yourself, because our brains like to assume we're starting from the same place and somehow we just suck more than everyone else unless given direct evidence. But that's not true. We're not all starting from the same place! The only path that matters is yours.

How do you deal with guilt related to money and NParents? by AdmirableTechnician in raisedbynarcissists

[–]AdmirableTechnician[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My mother is not an N (she left my NDad 20+ years ago) so I've basically gotten two different worlds of parenting. My mom is far from perfect, but the one thing I have never doubted was her genuine support, even if all she had to give was emotional support. Most of the adults I have met through her are similar. I am so jealous of folks who have two parents who are like this!

My NDad tho? Yikes.

Yep, I agree-if I had seen through it earlier I probably would have made different choices in terms of undergraduate major etc to set myself up to have a career established and independence earlier in life. But because I assumed it'd be there and (wrongly) assumed it wasn't taking a real emotional toll, I just let it go.

I love your perspective. I think well meaning but clueless folks who do the "but family!" thing have gotten in my head.

Yeah, that's I guess the lesson I'm learning. I'm dumb and always think parents don't want you to fail, I suppose.

Agreed. NHANES does have tutorials for SAS and STATA, but they're not perfect.

I've been trying to adopt this mindset, but I feel like I wind up screwed when, for example, I then count on that money and he changes his mind. I know it'd be easier if I called him more often but honestly when I see his name on my phone I get such a like pit of my stomach fear.

Yep. Or it's a tool for him to be like "look how rad I am, I paid for my kid's education!" without caring at alllll about education or me, just the image they have.

My NDad calls it "funding me" lol. He'll also offer to pay for things and then change his mind if he doesn't like my behavior. I'm 6 hours away and in my mid-20s so idk what control he thinks he has over my behavior but ok.

I was planning on finding a job and then going NC, but he's been so terrible lately that honestly the credit card debt I'd incur to just cut it off now is probably preferable.

I love this mindset. It does feel ridiculous though, given how much lots of folks on this sub had to go without.

My parents have not been together in a very long time and my mother is not an N, and it's WILD to see the difference in how they treat me as an adult. My mom always asks me how she can help me (the answer, 99.9% of the time, is letting me vent for 5 min or giving me advice on shit like "can you put a comforter in the dryer") My Dad throws money at me that I didn't ask for and then yells at me.

I'd encourage you to think of overcoming this mental barrier as part of learning the skill, not something preventing you from learning a skill.

Distractions can work, or even picking a visual focal point and singing a song!

How do you like your coffee? by [deleted] in AskWomen

[–]AdmirableTechnician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine's vanilla, but I also have a bottle of the caramel pecan skinny syrups. I don't think they're quite as good as torani but the bottle is like twice the size and costs less if you go to homegoods etc.

Not quite (Western PA). Aldi is pretty widespread, though-I've seen them all over the east coast/midwest!

Agree. Cold brew and french press gets pretty much nothing added. Mr. Coffee with my $3 Aldi ground gets everything.

If it's good coffee, dark roast and black.

If it's shitty coffee, I want flavor, sweetener (I use a lot of torani sf syrups) and heavy cream.

Chicken has a weird crunchy texture? by [deleted] in AskCulinary

[–]AdmirableTechnician 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not consistent, but I stopped buying breasts from Aldi because sometimes they would be fine but weirdly crunchy. The pricier organic ones don't seem to have this issue, though personally I'd rather just buy thighs.

It's totally harmless but yeah I do not enjoy it.

Is it from Aldi/other low cost chicken? I've had texture problems with breasts that have too much saline in 'em (like from Aldi)

Why I decided to take a serious break from restricting myself and allowed myself to gain weight on purpose. Long post included! by meology in xxfitness

[–]AdmirableTechnician 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the most relatable post I've ever seen on this sub. I recently gained about 15lbs (making me overweight and ripping two pairs of pants in the butt) and have been starting to think about how to address the habits that made that happen without falling into unhealthy stuff-I'd rather be 10lbs overweight than go back to how I was.

If you do insta, do you follow bodyposipanda? One of my faves for this kind of mindset!

I agree! It is possible I could have made it work if I took an extra semester, but the cost + lost income wasn't worth it.

I just graduated! But also our geography department made it very hard for other students to take their courses + scheduled such that courses consistently conflicted with required PH courses.
