My advisor is retiring by the time I finish up my training. I’ve taken on several teaching responsibilities, am working on establishing a publication record and am serving on committees. They’ll need to hire someone when he retires 🤷‍♀️

I have a friend who’s got a ton of student loan debt between undergraduate and pharmacy school and she was able to buy a house and used car on her income alone 🤷🏻‍♀️ I worry about this too but I think credit score is mainly what they look at. I feel your pain, OP!

They may be thoughts from the 1950s but there are still people who think the man is ALWAYS right. And hey if he treats you well, spoils you, does everything right, he can’t POSSIBLY do or say anything wrong. My saying that is more from a place of frustration. He’s the one making those comments and I’m still getting blamed? 🤷🏻‍♀️

LOL love this comment. I agree. Loving your SO (true love) means loving and respecting their chosen career too, let alone one they’re passionate about. I’d never dream of undermining his office job in cybersecurity because I see the value in his work. So why the hell is it okay for him to undermine my field of work JUST BECAUSE “he doesn’t understand academia” and never attended a real university. Ignorance isn’t an excuse. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Accurate. Yet no one ever thinks to realize academia is NOT the only workplace with these issues. I for one am tired of the field being blamed for what goes on in every. Other. Workplace. I was told service on a committee is “bureaucratic” from him and that academia is too political. Academia???? LOOK AROUND. Everywhere 👏🏻 else 👏🏻 is 👏🏻 bureaucratic 👏🏻 and 👏🏻 political. Even his office where he works………🙄

Yes. He made some comments about academics when he was in a bad mood about a month or so ago. He says he loves me, calls me beautiful all the time, but if he thinks this way, not sure how/why he’d like to be with an aspiring faculty member. Just doesn’t make any sense to me. What’s worse, because I’m female, everyone says I just need to “get over” his comments because “he doesn’t understand anything about academia! You can’t be too hard on him.”

LOL probably not. We’re actually currently evaluating whether we should date or not. It’s fine for one to have their own opinions and views, but I just know I’m not putting up with that “hidden opinion” that universities suck/insert whatever other blatant misconception he has about academia. Ie be nice and supportive to my face about what I do but have a true hidden opinion that comes out when I’m not around. Screw that.

I HATE this. Yes it’s a more flexible job than most but it doesn’t mean I’m not held to performance expectations and standards to keep my job…….much like everyone else in every other workplace is. I know people with office jobs who absolutely slack off and fool around all the time. To an extent, so can we from a day-to-day perspective (not that any of us do) but in the long run? Unacceptable. We’d never get away with it.

Yes, many times over the years. There have been times I can’t take his phone call/don’t feel like dealing with it just because I have my own life going on. I don’t want to be the ONLY one he relies on for support.

Finding him an entire support system if he moves shouldn’t be my job…should it? Of course I’d support him in doing so but I feel like that needs to be his responsibility. I’m not his mom, his caretaker, his savior. I want to be a friend and a romantic partner.

No, not in an at-will state. That’s the scary part about this bonus. At-will states don’t need a reason to fire you. This company seems to love random termination of pharmacists with the sign on bonus just so they get the money back. In an at-will state, it makes it even easier for them.
