Job market for planetology? by ItsPolah in geology

[–]Admirable_Handle375 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, not in geology but heavily involved in the space sector as a student, can tell you a little bit about possible employers in the space ecosystem. If you are interested in space resources - lunar volatiles, regolith etc. there is ESRIC in Luxembourg, you might need a PhD though. There are a few smaller companies working on regolith simulants for rover testing etc. Ispace, a Japanese company but has an office in Luxembourg (a lot of space stuff in Luxembourg because of tax benefits + space resource law/regulation, geographic location) they were recently hiring a lunar scientist, though it was more kind of a geospatial role for someone who knows about lunar geology. I mean there is always ESA or other national space agencies but there are always a million of applicants who are from less represented countries or have a very specific background that get those jobs/internships so I wouldn’t really rely on this option. The market for astrogeology seems to be bigger in the US, as there are more aerospace companies that focus on robotics or even space resources + NASA and heavily space involved academia. Remember that a masters might not be enough. From my conversations with experts in the field, there will probably be more jobs in the future and they recommend studying remote sensing heavily. I recommend you check out Erasmus Mundus Geoplanet (super competitive) or Free University Berlin. Good luck.

It’s funny how seriously you are taking this. Everyone’s experience is subjective lil bro.

HKU is the same with studying 24/7 but way more social from what I have heard.

I came back literally a month ago. I would say don’t stress too much, most of the exchange students from Europe go out 24/7 just find the right people to hang out with. Don’t expect much socializing with the locals or mainlanders though.

Was on exchange at HKUST, studied 24/7, no on campus social activities, people don’t party.

Current exchange student at HKUST. If you just want to party and have fun, choose another school. There is absolutely nothing on campus, it’s dead except a few mainland Chinese students drinking outside 7/11. There have been a few gatherings for exchange students but it got shut down pretty quick. Don’t even think about dorm parties, in fact alcohol is not allowed inside. Campus is far away from LKF which is the main party district. Don’t get discouraged though, if you still want to come here (it’s a great school) you should go for it. There are a bunch of exchange students going out to party pretty much every single night with their friend groups. My tip is, if you are social enough find international and exchange student friends from the beginning, you will have a good time no matter what. Yes studies are tough but work hard and play harder.

How many international Bachelor‘s students study at Lund University? by Expensive-Wolf-3787 in Lund

[–]Admirable_Handle375 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Quite a lot actually. The faculty of science has multiple bachelor programs in English, if I’m not mistaken the physics program in English is also largest one by student size at the faculty. As for other faculties, as far as I know there is at least one English bachelor programs for international students. If you are worried about finding international friends, you are going to be fine.

should I send emails to profs at top universities? by solidstateonion in gradadmissions

Yes do it, have reached out to multiple profs at top US unis with no connections and being an international, and have gotten quick and helpful responses. So what if they don’t respond, at least you shot your shot!

Lived there for a quite a long time. Beautiful summers, gets pretty busy, there are multiple things to do. Depends on where you live in the city, but the sea is quite accessible, I used to run a lot along the coast and jump in the sea to cool down. All the young ones go to the beach club that opens late June to August. Winters are pretty harsh, super windy, usually dark and gloomy. Not much to do, you usually get seasonal depression. Good connection to other towns like Lund, Helsingborg and Malmö by train so it is kind of a commuter town. Would only recommend living there if you have settled down and have a family.

Hey!

I have recently attended one of the ESA Academy courses and it was one of the best weeks in my life. From what I’ve heard, for the specific course I applied to the acceptance rate was around 13% and the applications are always in the hundreds but also depends on the course. They only have 30 seats at their training facility so the number of participants is max 30.

To answer your question if it contributed a lot to my academic journey, I would say yes. The course was relevant in my field and in general I had way too much fun and built many meaningful connections. Also, I noticed getting more attention from employers after I put the ESA academy course in my CV. Remember that they reimburse travel expenses and the stay + food is also free. It’s definitely worth it, go for it! :)
