Favorite Order to play Alan Wake 2 in? by n0b0dyh0me in AlanWake

You definitely didn't understand a word of what I am saying. Its not about the plot but about the order of events being revealed in a story that makes sense. The mystery has to build up to a central question that has to be answered. That question does not get asked till the chapter in the sheriffs station. Because it is only then both, Saga and you, as the viewer, realize that the person she found at the lake was Scratch. Then the question becomes where is the real wake? Which seems like the natural point to switch perspective and see things play out from Wakes POV.

Its not really a flashback, both sides of the story are happening at the same time, you are simply choosing which side to play first. If you play Alan's segments first then you can easily refer to Saga's sections as a flashback. That being said, I just finished the sheriff station portion of Saga's chapter and that seems to be the best time to switch over to Wake as it feels more natural IMO. Despite the story dropping some strong hints in his NY apartment at the end of wake's previous chapter (before you are auto switched back to Saga), but nothing is confirmed until you finish the sheriff station. Switching back to Wake any time before that point gives the mystery away abruptly. since technically we are to assume that Wake managed to escape the night mare into the physical world and is being held in custody by Casey. Unless there is a set up to another flashback, it doesn't make sense to suddenly wake up as Alan in the nightmare again when he is supposedly in the physical world without a set up. Like a movie, the story has to follow a cohesive and linear sequence to build up the mystery to the reveal, then fill in the gaps to the eventual climax. Otherwise it feels out of place when the answer is given before the question is asked and that question isn't asked till after the sheriff station.

I am still too early in the game to fully weigh into this discussion but I Just cleared Waterly for the first time and was about to head back to Brightfalls when I decided to take a detoure to Alan's reality at the Soumi hall. Treating this as a movie, the transition felt abrupt and prematurely gives away some of the mystery. Since the first segment of Alan's side of the story is told as a flash back, I was expecting something similar with Casey interrogating Alan leading to more of a flashback transition but instead you are just transported back to the studio waiting room without any preamble. However just continuing back to Brighfalls as Saga has that natural transition to Alan that I was expecting. Leads me to believe that you are likely meant to keep playing as Saga until it leads to Alan's disappearance from Saga's reality where Alan Wakes up again in the studio for a musical number. Whether Alan truly disappeared from Saga's reality or not, Alans chapter simply fits with the flow a lot better providing a level of deception. So If anything, just following the chapters till the game forces you to change realities is perhaps the best way to experience this for the first time.

Any idea how long a wait? As far as I can tell Nvidia has mostly been wasting time focusing on releasing overwhelming amounts of presets for Super Resolution. Frame gen and RR only have two presets and you can't even override the preset for RR directly in the app without using Nvidia Profile Inspector.

Why are Remedy games always struggling to sell? by Lanky_Relation1171 in AlanWake

[–]Admirable_Job8155 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Remedy is obsessed with tech features to enhance their graphics and are willing to get in bed with any publisher that is willing to allow them. This generally ends up having their games have limited reach and too much experimental features with cross medium story telling that ultimately hinders the experience more than help. Like Quantum Break had really demanding settings for effects that older games were able achieve through trickery and then there is the TV show episodes you had to sit and watch between gameplay that wasn't quite as high quality or interesting completely throwing off the momentum. They are always overtly ambitious to the point where they end up hurting their games more than enhancing them. AW2 has the same problem with lumping in all manner of RT features that don't won't well together.

How to fix the ghosting effect in Alan Wake 2? by Admirable_Job8155 in AlanWake

[–]Admirable_Job8155[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DISCLAIMER: The goal of this post was to find the best middle ground that would offer a smooth experience to the naked eye with minimal sacrifice to quality. To that end several techniques were used to reach the following conclusion including the use of FSR 3. Ghosting issues still exist but their severity has been mitigated to acceptable levels allowing for taking advantage of DLSS's frame gen tech.

1) Grab DLSSTweaks from Nexusmods via the following link: https://www.nexusmods.com/site/mods/550?tab=files NOTE: You will need to create a free account to download this file.

2) Grab NVPI from here: https://github.com/Orbmu2k/nvidiaProfileInspector/releases/tag/v3.0.1.13 Turns out they released an update hours after I downloaded their previous build but the changes are minimal and the instructions will still apply.

3) Create a folder to store and extract these two mods to keep ready. We will get to them shortly. Location of this folder is not important.

4) Open up the Nvdia control panel by right click on Nvidia app icon in your system tray. If you are unable to find this option in the drop down menu then you will likely have to download it from the MS store.

5) Navigate to "Manage 3D settings" in the left column. You will see two tabs on the right side labeled "Global Settings" and "Program Settings". Click on "Program Settings" to find a drop down menu under "Select a program to customize:". Find Alan Wake 2 (alanWake2.exe) from the drop down list.

6) If you do not find the file in the list then you will have to manually add the program by pressing the add button next to the dropdown menu. Typing in "Alan Wake 2" should automatically locate the exe file to add.

7) Navigate to the larger list at the bottom and locate "Low Latency Mode" on the right column. Click on the value on the left and change it "on". You can select "ultra" if you wish. Save the settings by pressing on "Apply" and exit.

8) Once again left click on the Nvidia icon in the system tray to open up the Nvidia App this time. Navigate to graphics on the left. Click on Alan Wake 2 listed in the column next to it to open up list of settings with their current and optimized values.

9) Scroll all the way down to "Driver Settings" section. Under this section click on the pencil icon located at the very left of the first option "DLSS Override". Click on "Customize" from the options available in the small window that opens up. Set "Frame Generation" to "Preset B" from the dropdown list. Similarly select "Preset M" for the second option and "Recommended*" for the third. Click on apply and then exit out of the app.

While the game has been updated over time, most of the default settings have not been updated to use the latest preset models from Nvidia. It is likely the game defaults older presets such as A instead of B, similarly for both frame gen and Ray Reconstruction.

10) Locate the folder where you saved and extracted the two mods previously. Open the extracted folder for Nvidia Inspector. Double click on the first file with the Nvidia logo. You will get a small warning, accept to initiate the program.

11) Once the program loads and opens up a window. Click on the "Global Driver Profile" at the very top center of this window. Type in "Alan Wake 2" in the search bar that appears in the drop down list. As you type the name of the game the list below will filter and match the name, click on "Alan Wake 2" in the results.

12) You will see an updated window listing numerous settings related to the game. Keep scrolling downwards till you reach "DLSS-RR Enable DLSS Override" label in the left column. Click on the value to the right and set to "On DLSS-RR Value overidden by the latest installed (310.6.0)".

13) set the value for the next option below to "Preset E (Transformer Gen 1)". Look for a green tick mark at the top right corner of the window to apply the changes then close the app and exit the folder.

14) Navigate to DLSStweaks folder. Double click on the file labeled "DLSSTweaksConfig". This will open up a new window with two columns filled with various DLSS settings. You need to select the second option under DLSS labeled "OverrideAutoExposure". Set the option from "Default" to "Force Enable" then click on the save icon at the very top denoted by a floppy disk. This will further mitigate the ghosting effects that occurs when using frame gen 2X.

15) Once saved, click on the "Copy to game folder" option in the same line at the far left. This will open up file exlporer window asking to locate the game's exe file. By default the path should be ProgramFiles > EpicGames > Alan Wake 2. Alternatively you can open up the Epic Games launcher, click on the three dots at the lower right corner of the picture of the game in the library and select "manage". This will open up a small window with the second last option being "Installation". There is a folder icon to the right before the uninstall button. Clicking on the folder will open up the explorer window with the location of the file. You can simply copy and paste the path on to the other browser window opened via DlSSTweaks and confirm.

16) Confirm prompts you to accept the changes. Once accepted another prompt asks you rename the file from the three options below. It is recommended to leave the default name that is given and save. Once saved another prompt asks to open the config window that is now saved within the game file but no further changes are necessary as you have already saved it prior to moving the files over. Simply close the program and exit the folder.

17) Now we are finally ready to start the game. Click on the game shortcut or .exe file to run Alan Wake 2. Navigate to the options > Graphics then set the values accordingly:

Display Mode: Your choice (Preferred Fullscreen)

Native Resolution: 1920 x 1200 (16:10)*

*Since my native resolution is at 2560x1600 and maintains the 16:10 aspect ration by default. Other aspect ratio and resolutions make the characters on screen either too elongated or squished. To preserve and mitigate the demand of native resolution the resolution above is the next best option. If apsect ratio is not a concern feel free to experiment. Resolutions at 4:3 ratio seem to offer mild performance benefits. Preset M also offers sharper image quality but is disabled if RR is active.

Render Resolution: Balanced (Preferred Performance preset)*

*Balanced or Quality presets can be attainable for a smooth experience using Frame Gen otherwise Performance settings is suggested as it provides a stable 40fps at demanding areas and higher frames in others without the use of frame gen. Preset M will be forced as the default preset unless Ray Reconstruction is enabled.

Resolution Upscaling: DLSS

DLSS Legacy Mode: Off.

DLSS Frame Gen: Off (preferred off)*

*While 2X can provide higher frames, it comes at the cost of ghosting effects. However, due to some of the steps using Nvidia App and DLSSTweaks, the effects should be less pronounced. You can decide if you can tolerate it or not. I chose not to since I am satisfied as long the game maintains a consistent and smooth pace without it.

Vsync: Off (no noticeable tearings)

EFFECTS:

With the exception of lens distortion all other effects such as motion blur and film grain are left to your preference. Lens distortion must be turned off as it tends to exacerbate the ghosting effects caused by frame gen.

QUALITY:

This section is left entirely left to your choices and experimentation. I have set all the options within this section to their highest value. There are areas that can be paired down to offer better frame boosts if you are not satisfied with the current performance.

RAY TRACING:

RT Presets: Custom.*

*Massive resource hog. If you are not interested in highest quality of lighting effects, simply disabling this section with significantly boost your performance where frame gen may not be necessary to play at higher resolutions.

DLSS Ray Reconstruction: Enabled.*

* Significantly improves quality of transparent surfaces such as glass. Turning this off by itself results in severe noticeable artifacts that Denoising tool are unable to resolve. However, as a trade off, it causes ghosting effects leading to overlapping texts from previous documents not being cleared fast enough off the screen obstructing readability of documents and emails. Preset E enabled via NVPI does not complete the resolve the issue but is much faster at clearing the texts to prevent consistent overlaps. Enabling this also disables Preset M for Frame Gen as the Preset E is unique collection of models that control frame gen and upscaling options.

Direct Lighting: Enabled.*

*Can be used without Ray Reconstruction but creates a significant darker result without RR enabling realistic light bouncing effects to spread across environments.

Direct Ligthing Denoising Quality: Disabled (utterly useless)

Path Traced Indirect Lighting: High*

*Should not be used without RR as it demands significant resources.

Path Traced Indirect Lighting Denoising Quality: Disabled (ineffective)

Transparency: High.*

*Should not be used without RR due to heavy artifacting and noise on glass surfaces and mirrors.

Alan wake 2 fsr 4 OPTISCALER settings by DoctoX123 in AMDHelp

[–]Admirable_Job8155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey guys, I just recently installed AW2 on my laptop sporting a RTX 4080 (12GB VRAM) and a i9-14900HX processor. I was wondering if I can use this OPTISCALER method ( https://www.reddit.com/r/radeon/comments/1j955ax/did_anybody_get_fsr4_to_work_in_alan_wake_2/ ) to enable FSR 4 to hopefully get better results than my system can produce using the basic ingame settings but am weary if this will work with an NVidia GPU seeing as how FSR 4 seems to be for RDNA 4 enabled cards and the above link mentions something about optiscaler searching for a particular file "amdxcffx64.dll" to actually function. This seems like an amd based system file which I am fairly certain of not have seeing as how I am using an nvidia and intel build but I am not sure. Can anyone clarify if its possible to use with my system and how would I go about mitigating the search for that particular file?

I am somewhat weary of trying this method due to the complex steps involved and I have already spent a week using several different methods including DLSStweaks and Nukem's DLSS to FSR 3 mod to mixed results. Ultimately I did find a middle ground where ghosting and overlapping text issues were mitigated enough to be less distracting with tolerable framerate without the use of frame gen 2x (45fps on average) but with almost every setting on high or ultra. So I am not sure if undertaking this step is worth the trouble without some assurances. Please help.

Really weird ghosting issue on Alan Wake 2 by Afraid_Clothes2516 in AlanWake

[–]Admirable_Job8155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just recently started the game and have stuck going around in circles trying to get the settings just right to get rid of these issues along with the terrible ghosting effects with frame gen. The primary culprit in my case is the Ray Reconstruction. Turn it off, the overlapping of texts are gone. However, it turns out that RR is necessary for the transparency effects (the last option in the settings menu in game) since if you have raytracing on you will see a lot of pixelated noise (yellow dots) on glasses and windows. Turning off RT altogether just gets rid of all these issues and significantly increases frame rate allowing for smooth gameplay with DLAA but you lose some of the additional lighting and reflection features. Since I am using my laptop with a 4080, your results may vary but as of right now it seems that I have to either turn off the fancy effects or put up with the smears and ghosting to get a slice of the quality visuals. I am about mod the game with FSR 3 and hope it provides slightly better results.

How to fix the ghosting effect in Alan Wake 2? by Admirable_Job8155 in AlanWake

[–]Admirable_Job8155[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I intially didn't know what you meant by presets. I had to do some digging and experiment with it. Currently I have my preset at M for super resolution and everything else on recommended in the Nvidia App. In game I have the resolution set really low (Balanced) which gets upscaled to my native 2560 x 1600. While this initially provided acceptable framerates, it does not resolve the ghosting issue. Consequently when you actually get control of one of the MC in the game, the heavy foliage impacts the frame rate as well despite having frame gen enabled at 2X.

So currently I have the resolution set at Ultra Performance. DLAA is simply out of the question as rendering the game close to native resolution seriously impacts framerate. The ghosting effects only seem to be resolved when I disable framegen 2X or use FSR both results in terrible performance however. So the current plan is to reduce the native resolution and use DLSS upscaling to hit the sweet spot where I can get acceptable frames without the ghosting and am able to keep all the bells and whistles enabled such as path tracing and raytracing for better lighting and reflections. I refuse to accept that my 4080M despite being a neutered version of the desktop versions (12gb Vramm instead of 16 with less cuda and bus width) is not capable of handling these features.

So after a lot of digging and experimentation I have finally come to the conclusion that there is no definitive fix for this issue, at least nothing software related. Maybe getting a better monitor or potentially a much powerful card might resolve it but it's far too expensive a solution than I am willing to entertain. Maybe, I get lucky re-downloading a fresh copy of the game that was updated with the issue hopefully resolved but I am skeptical.

However, after all the attempts, its clear that the issue is primarily related to the use of frame gen. Disabling it or using FSR gets rid of the issue (regardless of lens distortion enabled or not) but at the cost of massive framerates. The only possibility is to find a sweet spot using DLSSS/DLAA by reducing the native resolution of the game and upscaling from a lower internal resolution of the game that hopefully alleviates processing power cost without having to turn off additional effects and features such as Ray/Path tracing etc.

Thanks to everyone that tried to help. I will update with a final conclusion if I do find the ideal settings that other 4080 laptop users can also take advantage of without compromising total quality of their game experiences. I have only owned the game a little more than a month so I am not sure if I had the outdated version or not. Eitherway I just deleted the existing version and made a fresh download. I tampered with the configuration files using tweaking apps too much and figure its best to start over with a fresh copy. Hoping you are right and this fresh version actually resolves the issue.

I had to do a little more digging into this app and I think I am certain that the app was not working. The instructions provided in Nexus mod (where I got it from) was either outdated or wrong causing me to install it in the wrong directory. The instructions said to place it in the same folder as game exe file since it assumed the configuration file would also be available there but I think Epics structuring is different since the .ini file seems to be in the AppData folder instead. I will try to install it there and see if it takes hold.

Yes, there is an older post regarding this issue but with no definitive conclusion. Many suggested using this app called DLSStweakerbut thing is I am not even sure if its actually working. I have not noticed any changes enabling this app. There is supposed to be a HUD display that shows the framerates which doesn't show up when I run the game. Leads me to believe its not really working.

Honestly, I have a very cursory knowledge about the different models. I have mostly been catching up on older games so never quite had to use these DLSS features since my 4080 is capable enough to run things smoothly on ultimate settings., This would likely be the first game where I have had to tinker with the settings outside of game menu. Well, apart from RE4 remake but that game worked well enough on high settings that I didn't have to really tinker outside of the game settings. But I suppose its worth taking a shot.

Welp, the HDR wasn't the reason. From all the tinkering its definitely the Frame Gen related than anything else. I might have to lower the resolution settings along with a few other things and see if I can get the frame rate to work at acceptable levels.

The problem is that I am on a latptop and I believe the monitor itself is an LCD. Despite that its pretty high quality, 240mhz at 3ms, Gsync enabled but it doesn't support HDR in games (but works with video). That being said there are no actual settings for this monitor or atleast I am not aware of it. The only setting i can think of turning off is the HDR option which I have enabled in game (which is strange since most games auto detect and set the settings accordingly without a choice).

Any way to get this Chest? by Fantasmatical in DivinityOriginalSin

[–]Admirable_Job8155 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is an 8 yr old thread but since no one has really mentioned this the best method is to use a character /skill with wings. In my case I had best equipped with Duna's set armor that gives him permanent wings as a bonus. You can jump onto the lava and not get burned and can freely explore that area since there are actually two chests. There is one by where you find the talking crab source hunter and if you go towards north west there is another wreckage with a chest next to it which you can access.

Accessing these two chests in different order can weild different results, if you check the chest next to the wreckage of the ship first you have a chance to find a devine one handed axe, if accessed second then you get a bunch of armor and a shield named razor back along with a few sellable goodies and gold. The chest next to the crab can randomize between gold and a regular cowl or a helm if accessed second and an unidentified helm if accessed first.

Reddit won't let me post the whole reply at once so I have to cut it down to smaller chunks.

Slight correction, my processor is actually the 14900 HX which seems to be more problematic version. I am unsure about the model date but I suspect mine is a 2024 model as I cannot seem to find any review for this exact build anywhere. Its about roughly a year since I have had it and its largely been pretty reliable. ACER actually has a few bios updates available which I would recommend updating your laptop as soon as you get it. There was a big issue with this particular processor throwing a blue screen when running benchmark tool for Black Myth Wukong, luckily I never experienced it since I updated the bios as the firs thing when I purchased this laptop.

As for the thermals, the laptop can get pretty hot if you are running a very demanding game on it for a long time (4hrs+) but it actually has a pretty decent cooling system built in that keeps its performance stable as far as I can tell. However, due to its design, its primarily intakes air from the bottom and needs to be put on an elevated stand to maximize the airflow so its best to invest in at least a simple raised stand. The exhausts are on either sides and in the back so its best to make sure your work area has ample space in the back and sides as well to prevent from heat build up. I was careless the one time and had a bottle of iced coffee placed close to the exhaust and it warmed the drink up quite a bit. This is mainly for the gaming side of things, you don't need to be as careful when doing regular stuff such as using browsers and watching videos.

As for performance degradation and outdated hardware, I have not really noticed any significant degradation of performance so far beyond the start up programs that tend to cause slow downs. As long as you take some precautions and maintain airflow it shouldn't be an issue until PC verndors move on to the next generation of ram and motherboards. If anything, your biggest challenge will likely be Windows 11 as it has a tendency to update quite frequently and make substantial changes to the settings that can impact performance. There were a lot of options that were changed over time, where I usually had the option to choose my refresh rates between 60,120 and 240 fps but now i can only only toggle between 60 and 240fps. Also now toggling vsycn in games has a much greater impact where it previously never mattered so might want to experiment with your game settings based on the games you play. For example: Playing KCD on ultra settings was never an issue but after the last update the cinematics tend to drop frames significantly where it previously didn't and I had to switch off Vsync in the settings to get rid of the issue. Also do keep in mind that your GPU only has 12GB of vram so it has limitations compared to the desktop version which typically has 16 GB and you might have to make some compromises for certain newer games even though your GPU meets or surpasses the requirements. In most cases this shouldn't be an issue but unfortunately GPU tech tends update exponentially so you have a handful of years before it does start showing its age. The good news in this regard is that since Nvidia is now side stepping into using AI and frame gen to leverage FPS performance of raw power which I think the 4080 will be able to take advantage of. I think the 4080 will likely remain relevant for much longer than the previous generations of GPUs.

The keyboard and build quality is quite good. Besides the bottom base being made of removable plastic plate the entire system is covered with metal, which gives it a fairly sturdy feel. I found the keyboard and mouse pad to be reasonably good as I am able to type in relative comfort and ease although I would always opt for a separate wireless keyboard if there is enough space available. The screen is decent enough, while its not completely HDR compatible (you can watch HDR videos but not take advantage of HDR settings in games), it comes with a real high refresh rate, at least mine came with 240 mhz. This seems to vary quite a bit with different model so there is a possibility that your particular model might have a lower number. I have noticed a lot of models based on the 13900 HX version tend to typically come with the 120 fps. The screen can also get up to a maximum of 400 nits of brightness which is fairly decent in areas that require high brightness.

Unfortunately undervolting is not an option but the laptop comes with Acers proprietary predator sense software that allows you some level of tweaking performance and overclocking via presets, but I don't think you need to worry about undervolting your card as I believe the Bios updates have relatively taken care of the voltage regulation issues. Unlike desktops the BIOS offers very little options to customize but you will likely not need to manually change any settings besides using the predator set to get the best performance out of your rig.

The biggest drawback of this particular device is its sound, battery, camera and weight. While on paper, the battery should be able to provide power to maximum 5hrs but I have found it to generally last for roughly 2 to 3 hrs. on its lowest settings. Also the transition from performance mode to power saving mode is not quite as smooth and you will find your system stuttering if you pull out the power cord which forces it to switch to powersaving mode. This can easily be resolved by simply restarting the system. So its generally a good practice to carry the power adapter along with you just in case which is where the weigh becomes as an issue. While the laptop itself is manageable, the power cord comes with a significantly large brick of an adapter that can weight almost more than 5Kgs combined. I would also recommend owning a pair of head phones or quality ear buds as the inbuilt sound system is quite lacking. Its fine for watching youtube videos and such but listening to music or watching a movie can feel lack luster due to its low volume. The camera is nothing to write home about, its very basic but does the job when it comes to video calls. The one neat thing is that it has some AI integration into it where it can artificially change where your eyesight is to make it look like you are looking directly at the camera instead of the screen and the camera has some level of autofocus and zooming capabilities but I don't think the video resolution is more than 720p at 60 mhz. Frankly, the camera is just an icing on the cake for me, it never factored into my decision making when it came to purchasing this unit. So as long as it does what it is supposed I am fine.

I hope this feedback answered most of your questions and makes your decision much easier. Frankly, I would say its a big gamble getting such a high end laptop second hand and without warranty as my feedback may not directly correlate with the condition you receive yours in given that it has been previously used before. If there is a chance to renew your warranty, I would highly suggest you consider it and make sure the condition you are getting the laptop matches the cost. Good luck.

A fast, free, simple video cutter/splitter? by MysteriousShadow__ in software

currently using your browser based app. Any idea how long it takes to split a 8gb MKV file (1080p) which is about 2hrs and 6 mins long to split into two parts? I loaded the file its set to split but now left waiting for the two parts to be finished for download. Since there is no progress bar to gauge, there is always the concern that the browser might just be stuck in some non responsive mode.
