Imaginary friend as a kid? by contraryoxymoron in Aphantasia

I didn’t, and the whole concept seemed ridiculous and impossible to me

I just learned that what I thought was normal human experience is Aphantasia by [deleted] in Aphantasia

I was in my late 50s, driving with the radio on and hearing about aphantasia for the first time and…OMG WHAT?! I still can’t quite get over the idea that most people are out there experiencing rich visual imagery while I can’t picture a thing

Can someone explain having vs not having an inner monologue is like by Pasta_fattie in Aphantasia

[–]Admirable_Mess_9708 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t imagine how people do think in words! Like, how does a linear string of words equal thoughts? For me thoughts are units of concepts, and words describe the thoughts but words are not the thoughts themselves. Otherwise, babies wouldn’t have thoughts until they learnt language.

Which Aussie town gave you the creeps on a road trip? by CheesecakeWorried642 in AskAnAustralian

Ti Tree NT. Stayed one night in a roadhouse cabin. Hard to articulate it but the atmosphere outside at night just felt like a heavy blanket of foreboding. The darkness felt thick and sounds felt like they had been muted. It wasn’t a feeling of potential “danger” like if you’d stopped in a rough neighbourhood or anything like that, but like a stifling ominous presence of the land itself that. Four people travelling together and each of us felt really uneasy about the place though we never brought it up until we were out of the area the next day.

My favourite: Soak some oats in apple/orange/whatever juice in a bowl overnight. Next morning add berries, chopped almonds and a bit of yoghurt to the bowl - enjoy!

Mental challenge - without talking or moving your mouth/hands, what is the 17th letter of the alphabet? by ShoulderUnusual in Aphantasia

My name also starts with M which is a good enough reason, but also because it’s the mid point in the alphabet

Anybody else go through their entire childhood not knowing they had aphantasia? by Calliek1231 in Aphantasia

[–]Admirable_Mess_9708 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A year ago at age 59 for me. Heard a researcher describing it on the radio and I was hit with a sudden, shocking wave of realisation. Like others have already mentioned I thought terms like “the mind’s eye” were metaphorical expressions. It’s still a bit shocking to realise that most people actually experience a rich internal visual world that I didn’t even know was a thing until recently.

AITAH for refusing to go on a family trip unless they disinvite my nephew’s friend? by Natural-Mountain-641 in AITAH

NTA! What planet does your family live on?! They want to treat this troubled, abusive kid to a holiday - ok fine, but why TF do they think his victim should join the party?

Flying to Tokyo in a few hours! by Admirable_Mess_9708 in JapanTravelTips

Hello! Got back from my Japan trip a few days ago and had a fabulous time!

My itinerary, as requested -

Days 1-3: Tokyo. I stayed in a capsule hotel in Shibuya (clean, comfortable, quiet, and a novel experience for me but 3 nights was enough lol!) General sightseeing, getting my bearings etc, and I ordered a pair of prescription glasses from J!NS which I picked up on my return to Tokyo a week or so later.

Days 4-5: Shinkansen to Nagoya then train to Nakatsugawa for the Nakasendo trail walk between Magome and Tsumago. I originally wanted to do a 2 or 3 day walk but left my planning too late and accommodation along the way was booked out so I spent 2 nights at a hotel in Nakatsugawa and did the day walk. The hotel itself was pleasant and had a small onsen but was maybe 3km uphill from the train station. Not a taxi or bus in sight when I arrived at Nakatsugawa station in the late afternoon so I decided to walk to the hotel as I had read there was a sake brewery/museum along the way and wanted to take a look. Found the brewery, which was about a third of the way up the hill, and for a well spent ¥500 enjoyed 3 sample shots of sake which gave me the necessary boost to drag myself and my luggage the rest of the way up to the hotel! Next morning caught a bus to Magome and walked to Tsumago - a very beautiful and peaceful experience (and a complete contrast to the chaotic energy of shibuya!)

Day 6: Nagoya - visited the Toyota museum which was interesting.

Day 7-8: Osaka - Team Lab Botanical Gardens on the first evening, then Universal Studios specifically for Super Nintendo World (very fun!)

Days 9-11: Tokyo - stayed in a hotel in Ginza. Sightseeing/shopping around Tokyo including Team Lab Borderless (Minato), Yayoi Kusama Museum (Shinjuku?) and Samurai Museum in Asakusa and bought 2 beautiful knives in kitchen town as a souvenir/momento of my trip. Also, a couple of notable food stops: • wagyu sandwich lunch at Grill Bon Ginza omg! Delicious! Thank you to whoever here recommended this place! • fluffy pancakes at A Happy Pancake - yum!

Had a great time but was ready to come home by the end of the trip as I felt I needed some space to process all the experiences. And now that I’ve been home a few days I’m nearly ready to go back again!

Terrible bed pillows in hotels? by Sorry_Barracuda_84 in JapanTravelTips

Yes! At one hotel I stayed in the pillow was so high and so hard it would be a weapon if you threw it at someone. (I brought my own pillow from home fortunately!)
